Minister of Public Utilities promise better water supply

A promise from Minister of Public Utilities Marvin Gonzales that there will be a better water supply for hundreds of thousands of people in the coming years.

This he says as the Ministry prepares to launch its water strategic plan.

Yesterday Minister Gonzales addressed the opening of the Manzanilla booster station.

He said there are plans to ensure more citizens have access to water.

He said in the same time frame infrastructure of the Water And Sewerage Authority will be upgraded.

Minister Gonzales said while he cannot promise to fix all the problems he can assure improved delivery.

Chief Justice tells of staff shortages & crippling dependence on the State

Yet again the Chief Justice of Trinidad and Tobago is lamenting staff shortages and crippling dependence on the State.

Justice Ivor Archie yesterday declared open the new Law Term.

He said once again depending on the State for funding is not helping the Judiciary.

He renewed his call for greater autonomy, recalling it was promised in the 2015 National Budget.

The Chief Justice said leaning on the State for the hiring of much needed human resources has been an obstruction.

Nevertheless Justice Archie listed some of the achievements in the Judiciary over the past year and vowed to put greater emphasis on the criminal division.

Debate on motion to approve 5 nominees to sit on the PSC begins in the Parliament today

Debate on the 5 nationals whose names were submitted by the President, to sit on the Police Service Commission, begins in the Parliament this afternoon.

It is very likely the Opposition members in the House will either abstain or vote against the nominees of the President.

The 5 are Ian Ramdhani, Judith Jones, Maxine King, Rajiv Persad and Maxine Attong.

They are to replace the last commission, which collapsed under the weight of a controversy surround the selection of a Police Commissioner.

On Monday night the leader of the Opposition, Kamla Persad Bissessar said support for the nominees is not likely.

Last weekend, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley saw no problem with today’s exercise.

The government does not require a special majority to approve and accept the nominees.

Gun violence claims 3 lives

Three murders, 2 in Port of Spain and the other in Arima are engaging the attention of the police.

The latest incident occurred in Cocorite last night.

The victim is identified as David Ferriera.

Reports say Mr. Ferriera was involved in a fight with another man.

It is said during the confrontation the suspect opened fire hitting Mr. Ferriera several times.

He died at the scene.

Meanwhile a man identified only by his alias “melon” is gunned down on Nelson Street.

That incident also occurred last night.

And Adrian Wilson also known as Lanton was shot and killed at Church Street Arima, yesterday afternoon.

Reports say he was walking along the roadway when he was several times.

He died at the scene.

An explosion at a building storing ink and ink products leads to a fire at the Point Lisas Industrial Estate.

Reports say the incident occurred at Gemini Inks Caribbean Limited at Building F1 F2 Demarara Drive in Point Lisas at around 6:20 last evening.

Newscenter 5 understands when the fire service responded and the single storey warehouse building was well alight.

The fire service says preliminary investigations revealed the building was used to house detergent and hand sanitizers.

It says appliances from the Couva, Chaguanas and Mon Respos Fire Station responded and contained the blaze.

There were no reports of injury.

COVID strikes the Lady Hochoy home

Wards and supervisory staff at the Lady Hochoy home contract COVID-19 leading to it being sealed off from the public and under the supervision of the County Medical Officer of health.

The situation was made public during the COVID-19 briefing last Saturday.

Yesterday Social Development Minister Donna Cox told Newscenter 5, government is paying close attention to the unfortunate development and assures the authorities are taking nothing for granted.

There is no confirmation on their vaccination status. 

But Minister Cox continues to urge persons to take the vaccine.

She said persons have and continue to be advised but they are still being careless.

Eleven adults and three children at the home are infected with the virus.

Opposition leader is asking “Did the SOE work?”

With the announcement that there will be no extension of the State Of Emergency, the Opposition leader is asking, did it work?

Kamla Persad Bissessar says there was no way her MPs were going to support an extension.

The government would have needed a special majority in the parliament to extend the State Of Emergency.

According to Mrs. Persad Bissessar, the crime situation remains untouched by the State Of Emergency.

By simple majority in August the SOE, first declared in May this year, was able to get passage of the motion.

A warning to criminals from the National Security Minister

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds tells criminals the lifting of the curfew does not signal a reason to exhale.

Minister Hinds says he is aware that many citizens are looking forward to the return of normalcy come next month when the measures are to be eased.

At a media conference yesterday, Minister Hinds said among them is the criminal element.

He said following a meeting with the police service yesterday he is assured the law enforcement officers are ready.

He also said this will apply to the monitoring of beaches and places where persons congregate late into the night.

Police continue to sear for wanted man in connection with Princes Town murders

The search is continuing for a 33-year-old suspect in the chopping death of 2 relatives.

Last Sunday night, Monica Jagroop and Anterro McQueen were chopped at School Trace, New Grant, Princes Town.

Two other family members were wounded.

Relatives are denying the incident was the result of a land dispute.

The wounded are Indra Jagroop and Manickchand Jagroop.

Up to last evening the 2 were in serious condition at hospital.

One male relative yesterday told reporters a Puja gone badly is what caused the rampage.

The relative said the attack on the family has traumatised the entire community.

Up to yesterday police were searching for the man believed to have launched the attacks.

Police probe and overnight murder in Morvant

Watson Peterson is shot dead on the Lady Young Road in Morvant.

Reports say the incident took place near the lookout at around 8 o’clock last night.

It is said Mr. Peterson was walking in the area where he was shot.

Residents went to investigate, having heard the shot and found the body of Mr. Peterson on the roadway.

There was a single gunshot wound to the head.

Meanwhile, the burnt body of a man yet to be identified is found in Carenage.

Police found the body at around 6 o’clock Sunday morning.

The man’s hands and legs were bound when it was found in a drain off the western side of the road in Sea View Hill.

There was a piece cloth wrapped over the man’s face.

What appeared to be a burnt pillow was found close to the body.
