National Security Minister slams Opposition MP’s claims

National Security Minister, Fitzgerald Hinds

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds slammed the MP’s utterances.

Speaking with Newscentre 5 Minister Hinds said there is no crisis as being claimed by the Opposition.

He said the more the UNC MPs speak the more they expose themselves.

Minister Hinds stressed that democracy has not been nor will it ever be compromised.

He said the doors of the court are always open to the Opposition.

Minister Hinds also noted the return of the Prime Minister from the summit in Glasgow on Saturday.

PM accused of breaching constitution

The Prime Minister is accused of breaching the constitution.

Speaking at the Opposition Sunday news conference MP Rudranath Indarsingh again said the President is unfit to appoint persons to the Police Service Commission.

He said independent institutions in the country are being compromised.

He noted the withdrawal of the initial list of nominees, for what he said was a due to the Prime Minister being unhappy with a name/names on that list.

The MP said the government conspired to get Gary Griffith out of office.

He further warned people, that under the PNM, the same thing can happen to them if they cross a Minister.

PDP leader promises THA workers more money if elected into office

In the camp of the Progressive Democratic Patriots there is a promise that all workers of the Tobago House of Assembly would receive more money if the party gets into office.

On Saturday night, Watson Duke said immediately after the PDP assumes office, THA employees will get an enhancement in their salaries.

Mr. Duke was addressing a public meeting of his party in the Bethel New Grange Electoral District.

And PDP candidate for the area, Pastor Terrence Baynes said since he was elected in January there have been attempts to stall his work in the district.

Pastor Baynes said if elected into office, State lands would be developed so that houses can be made available and affordable to the people.

Pastor Baynes won the district in January this year when the result was a 6-6 tie for the PDP and the Peoples National Movement.

PNM launches campaign for December 6th THA election

The ruling Peoples National Movement has officially launched its campaign for the December 6th Tobago House of Assembly election.

Last night, at Shaw Park, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley gave assurances to the people of Tobago.

He slammed claims by some that his government poses a threat to this country’s democracy. 

Dr. Rowley spoke about the new marina for the island.

The PNM political leader promised to continue working for autonomy for Tobago but said the government needs Opposition support.

Tempers flare in the House of Assembly in the Bahamas.

Former Minister of State in the Finance Ministry Kwasi Thompson accuses the new government of misleading the country by claiming a 1 billion dollar hidden deficit.

Deputy Prime Minisiter Chester Cooper insisted the former Minister was not telling the truth.

Mr. Thompson argued that Mr. Cooper’s statement should be withdrawn.

Mr. Cooper maintained the former government did not disclose as stipulated in the act.

Former Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said that was not the case.

Last week the new Progressive Liberal Party presented a Budget and claimed it found the hidden 1 billion dollar debt.

T&T could face more pressure from decisions made at COP26 says PM

Trinidad and Tobago could face more pressure from decisions now being made at UN Climate Change Forum COP26 in Glasgow.

The comment comes from Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley.

Dr. Rowley who is attending the conference in Scotland says the impact can be felt on the cost of food.

On Monday, Value Added Tax was removed from thousands of items.

In a statement observing Diwali yesterday, the Prime Minister said food prices are impacted globally.

He said along with the COVID pandemic, this country faces other external challenges.

Dr. Rowley said the decisions now being made at the COP26 conference have the potential to affect this country in very serious ways.

He said the international supply chain crisis, which is currently disrupting all supplies, is likely to be felt in this country’s food baskets.

Dr. Rowley said overall, the country is at a vulnerable, crucial point in its history, yet some may seek to exploit this moment for their selfish, personal agenda.

However, the Prime Minister said in 2021 Budget the government pointed out many indicators for opportunities and economic improvements on the road ahead.

Safe Zones…so far so good, says one business chamber

With the ongoing operations of businesses under the cover of the Safe Zones, the head of the Confederation of Regional Business Chambers Vivek Charran says things appear to be going well.

But he feels the ‘lime’ culture in Trinidad and Tobago has been severely affected by the COVID linked restrictions.

Mr. Charran says other countries are benefiting from the fact that in Trinidad and Tobago measures are killing the “liming” sector.

During an interview this morning Mr. Charran said the business community would like to see a top cop appointed.

He also noted that shipping rates are having a negative impact.

However he said the reopening of business is still a step in the right direction.

10 more COVID deaths

There are 335 new cases of the corona virus in Trinidad and Tobago.

There were also 10 deaths.

The death toll has now reached 1,739.

So far this month 43 patients have died.

The death fatalities are 4 elderly men, 3 elderly women and 3 middle-aged men.

Eight of the 10 patients had multiple comorbidities including diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney issues.

The new infections were confirmed from samples taken between October 31st and November 3rd.

The number of active cases in the country now sits at 5,243.

A total of 51,459 people have recovered.

Three hundred and 37 people are in hospital, 23 positive patients are in step down facilities and 78 are in State quarantine facilities.

Six hundred and ten thousand, eight hundred and forty two people are now fully vaccinated.

It is also reported that all 5 beds at Tobago’s Intensive Care Unit are occupied.

New confirmed cases of the virus in Tobago are put at 55.

Tobago’s active positive cases were 325 yesterday.

The fully vaccinated in Tobago is now 21,067 people.

40-year-old man tazed outside Couva supermarket

A 40-year-old man in police custody after being tazed for erratic episodes outside a Couva supermarket.

According to police around 1.30 pm on Wednesday officers on mobile patrol along Watson Street, saw a male suspect exhibiting unruly behavior.

Newscenter 5 understands officers observed the man shouting at customers exiting the establishment.

The suspect also appeared to be causing customers and pedestrians in the area to be fearful for their safety.

The man was approached by the patrolling officers who identified themselves and told him of the offences being committed.

However, the suspect allegedly continued and hurdled threats to destroy property while using obscene language.

Police initiated an arrest during which a struggle ensued.

The man allegedly became more aggressive and an officer tazed him.

He was later subdued and arrested.

Bar owners not expecting further lockdown

Bar owners are not expecting any further lockdown despite the increasing number of COVID infections.

President Satesh Manosar says any person found in breach of the protocols should pay the consequences.

However he says everyone should not have to suffer for the mistakes of the few.

This morning Mr. Manosar admitted that he has observed blatant disregard for the regulations.

However he is calling on the police to enforce the law.

He says it is time for the public to do the right thing for the country to move forward.
