Body of woman found at the side of the road in La Brea

A woman, yet to be identified, is found dead at the side of a road in La Brea.

It is believed the woman is the victim of a hit and run accident.

Officers of the Southwestern Division found the body while on patrol.

The body was discovered along the Southern Main Road Union Village at around 3:30am yesterday.

The woman is of African descent and believed to be in her 50s.

Residents told police they saw the woman walking along the road earlier in the day.

Families of missing persons, fitting the description, are being asked to come forward.

The body is now at the San Fernando Mortuary.

16-year-old beaten by her father falls to her death in Claxton Bay

A teenager falls to her death while being beaten by her father.

Her name is Aliyah Candace Alexander.

She was 16-years-old.

The incident is reported to have occurred at the girl’s home on Rig Road in Claxton Bay yesterday afternoon at around 4:10pm.

It is reported that the girl was being beaten by her father with a belt when she fell down a flight of stairs.

She was taken to the Couva Health Facility where she died while receiving treatment.

Aliyah was a student of Couva West Secondary.

The father is said to be a member of the Defence Force.

Investigations are continuing.

Search continues for 5 CARICOM nationals in waters off Chaguaramas

The search continues for the 5 CARICOM nationals who disappeared after their boat overturned in Trinidad and Tobago waters.

Yesterday the St. Vincent and the Grenadines flagged cargo ship the MV Fair Chance, was being towed into local waters after it drifted towards Venezuela.

The MV Fair Chance capsized after leaving Port of Spain last weekend when the weight of the cargo shifted as the ship was travelling near Monos Island, off Chaguaramas.

Two crewmembers were rescued shortly after.

Up to yesterday the other 5 were still missing at sea but the coast guard continued its search off northwestern Trinidad.

National Security Minister, Fitzgerald Hinds yesterday confirmed the overturned vessel drifted.

There is confirmation that 2 of the 5 men, missing at sea after an accident near Trinidad, are nationals of Grenada.

Minister Hinds assured yesterday the search for the men continues.

The MV Fair Chance was carrying steel products, which was loaded at the CARICOM jetty in Port of Spain.

Accident claims life Woodford Cafe’s Director of Operations

A car accident claims the life of the Director of Operations of the Woodford Café at Price Plaza, Chaguanas.

Fifty-two-year-old Martin Hatem, of Woodbrook, died at the scene of the crash near the Grand Bazaar Interchange on the Uriah Butler Highway.

ACP in charge of traffic Wayne Mystar yesterday said the accident occurred at around 2:15pm.

ACP Mystar said he was pronounced dead on the scene.

His death has brought the road fatality figure for the year to 27.

During the same period in 2021, the figure stood at 24.

KFC welcomes back dine-in customers

Popular fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken welcomes back dine-in customers.

Yesterday the company also announced an about turn on a decision to charge for condiments.

Members of the public had expressed their outrage at this decision.

A release from KFC said it has heard the passionate, clear feedback and concerns from members of the public.

As a result condiments such as ketchup, mustard and pepper will once again be included with meals.

The decision has been a major talking point for customers since the announcement over 2 weeks ago.

Speaking with Newscenter 5, Chief Executive Officer at Prestige Holdings Limited Simon Hardy said sales were impacted by the decision.

Mr. Hardy also said customers will be allowed to dine-in at KFC restaurants and some protocols must be followed.

The decision to allow customers to dine at its restaurants was one of several decisions taken following the lifting of more restrictions.

THA says yes to Tobago Carnival in October

The Tobago House of Assembly says yes to a Carnival in October.

Yesterday Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transportation, Councillor Tashia Grace Burris announced the dates for Tobago’s Carnival celebrations 2022.

Ms. Burris was speaking at a news conference held at the Victor E. Bruce Financial Complex.

Dubbed ‘Mandate Monday’, it saw the Executive Council reporting on what they have achieved since coming into office, as well as what their plans are for the next quarter.

And in an immediate response Head of the Tobago Business Chamber Martin George welcomed the announcement.

Mr. George expressed the hope for a world-class event as he noted it would be Tobago’s only chance to make a first and lasting impression.

He added his chamber is willing to work with the Assembly to make this a reality.

Meanwhile Chief Secretary Farley Augustine confirmed that due to the pandemic there would be no Tobago Jazz Experience this year.

Nevertheless, the Chief Secretary said his administration is open to working with private promoters to stage fringe jazz events later this year.

The Executive of the Tobago House of Assembly will this week decide whether Political Analyst, Dr Winford James, will remain on the board of the Studley Park Quarry.

The appointment has been criticised, since Dr. James is the brother of Secretary Trevor James.

The board falls under Secretary James.

Yesterday Chief Secretary Farley Augustine said the appointment would be reviewed.

Opposition Leader claims government is illegally spying on individuals…some from within its own camp

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar is claiming government has acquired a piece of software and is now illegally spying on individuals some from within its own camp.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar last night said she has the list of names of people who are being closely monitored by the government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.

According to Mrs. Persad Bissessar even police officers are involved.

She said the government has engaged some of them.

The leader of the United National Congress said What’s App messages are being monitored.

She said the software is from Israel.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar said her information has come from a whistleblower.

Police are probing the circumstances surrounding the drowning of toddler

Three-year-old Maria Sophia Khan has drowned in a pool at her Gasparillo home.

Maria was rushed to The San Fernando General Hospital but it was too late.

The incident occurred around 2pm yesterday.

Reports say her mother, Mary Mahabir, was watching the child while she was in the pool in the yard of their Maharaj Trace home.

However, the mother is said to have left the child to go to the washroom and when she returned found her unresponsive.

At their home yesterday, Maria’s great grandmother Karen said she was recently warded for a week at the hospital because she was dehydrated and vomiting.

The family had set up the pool for Maria about 2 weeks ago, after she was discharged from the hospital.

PC Dass is continuing investigations.

This comes just days after 7-year-old Asiah Josiah drowned in a pool while visiting his grandparents at their Tableland home last Tuesday.

5 more patients die from coronavirus

Five more patients have died of the coronavirus.

The fatalities were recorded over a 24-hour period before yesterday’s update from the Ministry of Health.

The death toll now stands at three 1,761.

The deceased are 3 elderly men, 1 elderly woman and 1 middle-aged man.

Four of them had multiple comorbidities.

The Ministry has also reported 230 new cases of the virus.

They were from samples taken between March 31st and April 2nd.

The total number of active cases now stands at 6,650.
