Warning of a political revolution if the government does not rescind plan to increase the price of fuel

Political Leader of the Tobago based Progressive Democratic Patriots, Watson Duke

A warning to the government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, hold planned fuel increases or face the consequences.

Political Leader of the Tobago based Progressive Democratic Patriots, Watson Duke says now is not a good time.

He says there could be a political revolution and an early General Election if the plans are not put on hold.

Mr. Duke was at the formal opening ceremony of the PDP’s Barataria headquarters.

Mr. Duke recalled the statement made by Finance Minister Colm Imbert some years ago.
 

The party will officially launch its Trinidad arm on May 1st where the Deputy Political Leaders and some of its local government candidates will be unveiled.

Teenager Alliyah Alexander is said to have died from multiple blunt force injuries

Fifteen-year-old Alliyah Alexander is said to have died from multiple blunt force injuries.

Alliyah died on Tuesday at the Couva District Health Facility.

Staff reported that she was unresponsive when a male relative brought her in.

Couva police say the relative, a corporal, attached to the Defence Force, reported that he beat Alliyah with a belt at his Claxton Bay home.

He said she then fell down a flight of stairs.

Officers took him to the police station after relatives attempted to attack him at the facility.

The officers recorded his statement and allowed him to leave.

Investigators only classified Alliyah’s death as a homicide yesterday.

Homicide investigators are preparing to interview an army corporal in connection with the death of the girl.

The autopsy was done at the Forensic Science Centre, St. James.

Public Utilities Minister confirms he has a copy of the report on the nationwide blackout

Public Utilities Minister, Marvin Gonsalez

The Public Utilities Minister is not about to say what the investigative committee found to be the cause of the blackout in Trinidad on February 16th.

Marvin Gonsalez has confirmed he got a copy of the report from Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.

At a news conference last week, President General of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union Ancel Roget, said his information is that a fallen tree caused the power outage, which had duration of up to 12 hours.

Yesterday Minister Gonsalez was not willing to confirm but he was not pleased with Mr. Roget’s treatment of the matter.

He said he was not surprised by the contents of the report.

SWMCOL assures monitoring of the fire at the Beetham Landfill continues

Monitoring of the fire at the Beetham Landfill in Port of Spain continues.

Up to yesterday there was no definitive word as to what started the blaze late Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

Smoke from the first covered most of downtown Port of Spain for all of yesterday.

The Solid Waste Management Company Limited, which governs the landfill, says the situation has to be monitored.

Chief Executive Officer of SWMCOL Kevin Thompson says the fire started after 5pm on Wednesday.

He explains it was contained 5 hours later but re-ignited twice in other parts of the landfill.

Those fires were managed and after noon what was black smoke turned white.

Mr. Thompson said yesterday landfill fires are very complex so there is the possibility that this incident may not be over.

Ridding the nation of potholes on government’s priority list

Ridding the nation’s roads of potholes is said to be on government’s priority list.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley confirms this.

Affecting the repair of roads he says is the closure of Petrotrin.

At a meeting of the Peoples National Movement in Diego Martin on Tuesday evening the Prime Minister said part of the issue stems from issues at State owned Lake Asphalt.

Dr. Rowley said it is a matter of the supply of Bitumen.

Lake Asphalt is a wholly owned State enterprise situated in Brighton, La Brea, charged with the commercial development of the Pitch Lake of Trinidad and Tobago, the world’s largest deposit of natural asphalt.

4 more COVID related deaths and over 200 new infections

Trinidad and Tobago records 4 more deaths due to COVID-19.

The country also records 283 new positive cases.

The Ministry of Health says the deceased are four elderly males.

They all had multiple comorbidities.

There have been 3,770 deaths to date.

The active caseload stands at 6,406.

The Ministry says the month of March has seen 139,397 positive cases.

Meanwhile there is a warning to members of the public to avoid dropping their guard in spite of a continued decline in COVID-19 deaths and cases.

Health officials warn the virus is still very present in the country.

Epidemiologist Dr. Avery Hinds is also noting the majority of fatalities are the elderly with co-morbidities and the unvaccinated.

He was speaking at the COVID-19 media briefing yesterday.

Dr. Hinds said while there is also a decline in infections, a significant number of people are still testing positive for the virus.

And Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh called on persons to be responsible now that the COVID measures have been relaxed.

He paid particular attention to the unvaccinated.

The government’s safe zone initiative officially came to end on Monday this week.

Minority Leader slams the appointment of Dr. Winford James

Chief Secretary Farley Augustine is told to he must have known about the appointment of Dr. Winford James to the board of the Studley Park Enterprise Limited.

Minority Leader Kelvon Morris says Mr. Augustine is the head of the Tobago House of Assembly and approves such appointments.

Dr. James is the brother of Infrastructure Secretary Trevor James.

Mr. Morris says the chief secretary must have known there would be a clear conflict of interest, in Dr. James’ appointment.

The Minority Leader is questioning what was promised to the people of Tobago by the Progressive Democratic Patriots.

The THA Executive has been criticized following the issue and Chief Secretary said the appointment would be reviewed.

Carnival type send off for Soca artiste Blaxx

An elaborate send off for Soca artiste Dexter ‘Blaxx’ Stewart.

It included a Carnival like parade in downtown Port of Spain yesterday.

Blaxx passed away at hospital on March 28th.

He was cremated yesterday after his funeral service at the Queens Park Savannah, which was attended, by scores of fans and members of the entertainment community.

The singer’s casket was open for public viewing, revealing him in a white suit beneath a glass shield.

His daughter Mekicia Stewart remembered her father.

His sister Avelia Stewart is grateful for the support her brother received in death.

Port of Spain south MP Keith Scotland remembered Blaxx as a giant and one who broke all barriers

Blaxx was given a final procession through Port of Spain behind a music truck blaring his music following his celebration service.

He was cremated following a private ceremony at Belgroves Funeral Home, Trincity.

Prime Minister says yes the State purchased spy software but to assist in crime fighting

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley confirms the country has purchased spy software, in a bid to effectively fight crime.

But he is slamming the leader of the Opposition, who claims the tool is being illegally used to monitor people.

Dr. Rowley said last night fight against crime demands that the State has the ability to monitor communication.

At a political meeting in Diego Martin, Dr. Rowley said there was a time when Kamla Persad Bissessar needed protection.

Dr. Rowley said the Opposition Leader should have nothing to be afraid of.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar stated her information on illegal spying came from a whistle blower.

She said even police officers are being used.

The opposition leader said even members of Dr. Rowley’s party and government are being monitored.

Body of woman found at the side of the road in La Brea

A woman, yet to be identified, is found dead at the side of a road in La Brea.

It is believed the woman is the victim of a hit and run accident.

Officers of the Southwestern Division found the body while on patrol.

The body was discovered along the Southern Main Road Union Village at around 3:30am yesterday.

The woman is of African descent and believed to be in her 50s.

Residents told police they saw the woman walking along the road earlier in the day.

Families of missing persons, fitting the description, are being asked to come forward.

The body is now at the San Fernando Mortuary.
