DRUGS FOUND IN, ANTI CRIME EXERCISE IN TOBAGO…

Cocaine, marijuana and a fire are seized by police during an anti crime exercise in Tobago.

Officers of the Tobago divisional task force conducted the exercise, in the lowlands district early yesterday morning.

Acting on information, the officers found one pistol, 647 grammes of cocaine and two plastic bags containing 2.1 kilogrammes of marijuana.

Investigations are ongoing.

THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH RECEIVES PAHO REPORT ON DEATHS OF 18 BABIES AT PORT OF SPAIN GENERL HOSPITAL…

The ministry of health says, it has received the final report on the neonatal deaths at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

18 babies died, at the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital.

The Pan American Health Organization report was delivered to, the ministry last Friday, June 21, 2024.

The ministry says, having received the report, clinical and technical staff of both the ministry and the North West Regional Health Authority, will conduct an internal review of the findings.

In a statement the ministry says, this is in keeping with established standard practice.

It says, following the completion of the internal review, the entire report as submitted, will be made public.

In April this year, the health ministry announced that three foreign experts, started the probe into the bacterial outbreak.

According to PAHO, the review team applied a systematic approach, reviewing the multiple processes and procedures that impact the quality of services.

The methodology used included on-site visits, discussions with healthcare workers, review and analysis of data, and the utilization of standardized and validated questionnaires to deliver evidence-based recommendations.

PAHO stated that, the final report of the mission was provided to the health minister on June 21, including final recommendations.

PM HITS BACK AT ANCEL ROGET…

Prime minister Dr. Keith Rowley, hits back at union leader Ancel Roget following his statement about the future of the Petrotrin refinery.

Dr. Rowley dismisses a warning from Mr. Roget, that there will be no new ownership of the Petrotrin refinery, without the nod of labour.

The statement came from the Labour Day platform of the, Joint Trade Union Movement last Wednesday in Fyzabad.

Yesterday in San Fernando Prime Minister Rowley said, the refinery belongs to the people of Trinidad and Tobago and not Mr. Roget or his comrades.

He described the utterances of Mr. Roget, as stupid talk.

The Prime Minister said, within the coming weeks those with an interest in running Petrotrin will be evaluated.

Dr. Rowley was addressing a sports and family day, of his ruling Peoples National Movement at Skinner Park.

IT’S BUDGET DAY IN TOBAGO WITH A FOCUS ON HUMAN CAPITAL, EDUCATION, TRAINING AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Today is budget day in Tobago.

Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, will this morning deliver his final budget presentation as secretary of finance, trade and the economy.

In announcing the long-awaited executive council reshuffle, back in May.  Mr. Augustine revealed that a new finance secretary would be announced and sworn in on July 1st.

For the current fiscal, the THA requested $4.54 billion from the central government to manage the island’s affairs.

However, it received $2.585 billion, with $2.298 billion designated for recurrent expenditure, $216 million for development programme expenditure, and $18 million for the unemployment relief programme.

Two weeks ago, Mr. Augustine spoke of placing priority on investing in the island’s human capital, education, training and workforce development.

Last month he also indicated at the division of community development, youth development and sport would receive a larger allocation as part of the assembly’s response to rising crime on the island.

The two chambers on the island have also expressed the hope that the budget presentation would focus on tourism, improved inter island transport and direct foreign investment.

Crime, the economy and support for small businesses are also on the chamber’s wish list for today’s budget presentation.

73 YEAR OLD BARRACKPORE MAN BEATEN & ROBBED…

Police are searching for three men who beat and robbed a Barrackpore homeowner.

The 73 year-old pensioner, is nursing wounds about the body following the home invasion on labour day morning.

The victim told investigators he opened the door of his home on Rochard Douglas road around 5.30 am.

However about 15 minutes later, three men, including one with a gun, walked in and hit him several times.

The gunman was about five foot nine inches tall, of East Indian descent, medium-built, with a short beard and dark brown complexion.

The intruders reportedly tied the victim’s hands together and then ransacked the top floor of the house.

They reportedly stole $11,000 in cash and a safe worth $800.

After the assailants left, the pensioner managed to alert the police.

Barrackpore officers responded, but the three attackers remain at large.

PC Silochan is leading the investigation.

TRAGEDY ON THE HIGH SEAS AS A BOATING ACCIDENT LEAVES A FISHERMAN DEAD…

Two boats collide leaving one man dead

The deceased is 62-year-old Leston Douglas also known as, Mumble Jack.

He was a fisherman from Grand Chemin in Moruga.

Reports says, Mr. Douglas and a 35 year old female relative, were fishing in their 27-foot pirogue, humming bird, when tragedy struck.

The time of the accident has been given as 12.20am yesterday, about two nautical miles off Marac Village.

It is said, another pirogue, Libra, captained by a fellow villager, and collided with Mr. Douglas’ boat leaving it partially submerged.

The captain is said to have helped Mr. Douglas, and the woman on board his pirogue and went ashore while the humming bird vessel sank.

Moruga police and EHS personnel were alerted.

However, Mr. Douglas was unresponsive and all attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The DMO, Dr. Santlal, pronounced Mr. Douglas dead and ordered his body taken to the mortuary, of the San Fernando general hospital.

CPL Ramnarine is leading the investigations.

A MAN IS KILLED DURING HOME INVASION IN CHAGUANAS …WHILE ANOTHER IS GUNNED DOWN IN ARIMA

Bandits kill a man, during a home invasion in central Trinidad.

He is identified as, Steve Sookram.

He was shot and killed at his Oasis Gardens home, in Chaguanas on Tuesday night at 11:40pm.

The assailants fled the scene

He is one of two people killed between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The other deceased is Christino Pereira.

Reports say, he was gunned down at Race Course Road in Carapo around 10:15 last night.

Newscenter five understands, he was seated in his vehicle when he was ambushed by an armed assailant who opened fire.

Mr. Perreira was hit several times, in the upper body including the head

He died at the scene.

One man was shot and wounded on Hudson Street in St. James.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night, at around seven o’ clock.

Residents in the area said, they heard the gunshots.

They later found Jabarie Holder nursing gunshot wounds.

He was taken to the St. James district hospital, where he remains warded in a serious condition at hospital.

JTUM TO JOIN WITH OPPOSITION PARTIES …

The joint trade union movement tells of plans to join with opposition parties including the united national congress to get rid of the PNM administration.

Jtum head Ancel Roget made the announcement yesterday, in Fyzabad.

He called on all trade unions, except the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association, to band together and get rid of the Rowley administration.

Mr. Roget said, this is not about creating any new political entity, but about a united front to oust the PNM in the 2025 general election.

He said, it is the only way.

Yesterday, the workers gathered for their trek to Charlie King Junction, where several issues were addressed by their leaders.

Among the speakers, President of the Public Services Associations Leroy Baptiste.

The PSA is in contention with the government, over the Trinidad and Tobago revenue authority and the four percent wage offer, which has been rejected by some public sector workers.

Mr. Baptiste, led the chant calling for an end to the Rowley administration.

The workers then indicated they want the Prime Minister out.

ALLEGED ARSON ATTACKS AT THE HDC’S OLERA HEIGHTS COMMUNITY IN SAN FERNANDO … POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR SUSPECTS

Minister of Housing and Urban Development Camille Robison-Regis says, an investigation into alleged arson attacks on the Olera Heights housing community in, San Fernando is imminent.

The incident occurred on Saturday.

The Trinidad and Tobago housing development corporation in a release says, tyres were placed close to the community’s tank farms, and set on fire destroying two 3500-gallon water tanks.

It also says, the transmission and feeder lines that supply water from the water and sewerage authority to the tanks and apartments, within the development were slightly damaged.

The HDC says, the fire was contained within the area of the tank farms, and no one was hurt.

The damaged tanks were removed with the help of the San Fernando, City Corporation.

The release says, the transmission and feeder lines have been repaired by; HDC staff and that new tanks were to be installed yesterday.

Minister Robison-Regis condemned the alleged attacks and says, those found guilty will be prosecuted for destroying government property, and charged with other criminal offences governing similar attacks.

HDC chairman of Noel Garcia described the incident as unfortunate, while managing director Jayselle Mc Farlane warned that burning the tanks, could negatively impact the limited water supply currently being distributed to the community.

STARS TEAM WINS…

Fresh from victory internally, Kamla Persad Bissessar is hailing the hard work of her star team.

The stars team won the national executive elections, by comfortable margins, last Saturday.

At the end Mrs. Persad Bissessar continues, her hold on the party after the victories of others on the slate.

She was grateful for the support given to her slate.

Her candidates for three deputy political leader positions were victorious.

The winners are Jerlean John, David Lee and Dr. Roodal Moonilal.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar said, the opposing team began its campaign with a lie, hence its rejection by the membership of the UNC.

But it was not a statement that Tabaquite MP, and losing candidate for the post of deputy political leader, Anita Haynes Alleyne could support.

Rushton Paray’s opposing slate under the united patriots title, failed to win any of the positions.

Mr. Paray congratulated the winning team, but he had a question for the country.

Meanwhile MP Haynes Alleyne declared the campaign over.

Moving forward, Mr. Paray said, it’s a united UNC

from today.

The position of political leader was not contested.
