Woman is stabbed to death in west Trinidad

There are reports of an overnight murder in Petit Valley.

The victim, a woman, is yet to be identified.

The incident is said to have occurred last night.

Reports say at around 7:45pm the woman and a close male relative had an argument at her Simeon Road home.

It is said the quarrel escalated into a fight and the woman was stabbed several times.

She was rushed to hospital where she died a short while later.

Investigations are continuing.

Point Fortin man dies under mysterious circumstances

A man dies at his Point Fortin home under mysterious circumstances following an attack on family members.

He has been identified as Kaeron Dublin.

He was 57-year-old and lived at Tanner Street.

Reports say officers were called to the scene following a report by the victim’s sister who said that she and her mother were at home with Kaeron, when he began behaving violently.

The woman told police Mr. Dublin threatened to kill them both.

She said he began choking her and she pushed him, he fell and a violent struggle ensued.

The reports said both she and her mother attempted to subdue him and she placed her left knee on Kaeron’s chest close to his neck, while her mother called Mr. Wayne Joefield to assist.   

On arrival, Mr. Joefield checked and found Kaeron unresponsive and called the EHS.

Crime scene personnel processed the scene and retrieved items of evidential value.

Taxi drivers in Jamaica asked to call off national strike

National Taxi Operators have been asked to call off a planned strike, which is aimed at getting the government to respond to persistent appeals for fare increases.

Although the national strike was not staged some taxi drivers in St. Mary yesterday withheld their services.

They are demanding some action from the government, which would ease their suffering.

Managing Director of the Transport Authority, Willard Hylton wants to meet with the taxi operators.

Scores of commuters in the parish found themselves stranded unable to get transport.

Man who was published on the front page of Guardian Newspaper as being dead from COVID is considering legal action

Rodney Baker is considering his legal options after being reported as dead by the Guardian Newspaper.

Mr. Baker’s photograph was among several COVID fatalities published on the front page of the newspaper on Wednesday.

However Mr. Baker was discharged from hospital on Wednesday, having survived the coronavirus.

He confirmed that COVID-19 claimed the life of his wife 1 month ago.

On The Morning Show on i95.5fm yesterday, Mr. Baker said the error by the paper left him shaken.

He is in quarantine at home although he was last tested negative.

Mr. Baker said he prefers not to take the legal route but would if he has to.

The father of 2 said the loss of his wife has already dealt his family a significant blow.

He is hopeful the error will be corrected.

COVID deaths continue to climb in T&T

COVID-19 deaths continue to climb.

The Ministry of Health says the number of fatalities now stands at 341.

Ten patients died according to the latest update from the Ministry yesterday.

Dead are 2 elderly males, 6 elderly females, and1 middle-aged man all with comorbidities.

One young adult also died, but without comorbidities.

The release also says there were 558 new positive cases.

The Ministry also says there are 412 patients in hospital with 5,887 in home self-isolation.

The active cases are now at 6,998.

Prison officers want to know when they will be vaccinated

The Prison Service Association wants answers regarding vaccination for its members. 

President Cerron Richards tells Newscenter 5, people in other sectors considered to be frontline workers, are already inoculated, yet his members are being left behind.

He says even the Prison administration is in the dark on this matter.

Mr. Richards wants National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds to state clearly the plan for the prison officers.

He laments that they are operating in a congested environment with a relentless virus.

In response Minister Hinds told Newscenter 5 his office is always open for dialogue with the Prison executive and the association.

The association is expected to host a news conference on the matter.

T&T receives vaccine doses from St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Trinidad and Tobago has received doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne says the diplomacy between the 2 countries has helped in securing the doses.

Dr. Browne also said more vaccines would be coming from Bermuda all thanks to diplomacy.

Speaking at yesterday’s Post Cabinet News Briefing, the Minister also said talks with the US government to get more vaccines is ongoing and will be finalised soon.

SEA moved to July

July 1st is the new date for this year’s Secondary Entrance Assessment.

Minister of Education Dr. Nyan Gadsby Dolly announced the change yesterday.

The exam was carded for June 10th.

The Minister said the recent surge in COVID-19 cases is the reason for the change.

Dr. Gadsby Dolly said the change would be a disappointment to many students who want to close this chapter in their preparations.

The teachers union welcomes the decision.

President of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association, Antonia Defrietas said yesterday, the change was necessary.

The Minister of Education said of the 19,829 students registered to write the SEA this year, 178 have asked for a deferral.

She said a number of pupils preparing to write the Caribbean Examination Council’s test are also requesting deferrals.

According to the Minister, 402 candidates have opted to write the CXC exams in 2022.

Police officer killed in a vehicular accident in the south

A police officer, attached to the Mon Repos station in south has been killed in a vehicular accident.

The officer has been identified as Kent Neptune.

The tragedy occurred last night along the Solomon Hochoy Highway, near the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba.

Reports say the officer was heading south along the highway when he lost control.

The vehicle overturned several times and crashed.

Officer Neptune was thrown from the car.

He died at the scene.

Man who lead persons to a prayer session on Harris Promenade has been charged

The Head of the El Shaddai Deliverance Ministries, who led members of his congregation to a prayer session on the Harris Promenade, has been charged.

Apostle Lincoln Doughty was charged with gathering in a public place in breach of COVID-19 regulations.

Yesterday the 48-year-old Apostle Doughty was granted $40,000 dollars bail when he appeared virtually before Senior Magistrate, Armina Deonarinesingh.

He pleaded guilty to the charge but later changed his plea.

Along with his bail he has to report to the police station twice a week.

His matter was put to June 16th.
