Leader of the Opposition Kamla Persad Bissessar

As the country continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, the Health Minister and the Opposition go head to head on the issue of vaccines and management of the virus.

Yesterday’s Ministry of Health update told of 9 deaths and 348 new infections.

In the Senate the Health Minister clashed with Opposition Legislator Wade Mark who was questioning the government’s handling of the vaccine rollout.

Minister Deyalsingh said without such a challenge, herd immunity can be achieved.

At her party’s Monday night forum leader of the Opposition Kamla Persad Bissessar cast doubt on the numbers and information being delivered by the Minister and the Chief Medical Officer.

She did not leave out the Prime Minister.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar said the government has been failing in the effective handling of the virus.

Judge temporarily blocks media from publishing evidence from a State witness in Sean Luke trial

Sean Luke

A High Court judge temporarily restricts the publication of the evidence of a State latest witness in the Sean Luke trial.

The judge presiding over the trial of 2 men accused of murdering 6-year-old Sean Luke made the decision yesterday.

Justice Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds informed media personnel that she was exercising her judicial discretion to restrict reports on evidence and cross-examination for the latest witness.

Justice Ramsumair-Hinds noted the importance of an open hearing, especially in the context of the public interest in the Sean Luke’s case, but stated the temporary gag order was necessary.

She did not elaborate further.

The latest witness is the 16th to testify since the trial commenced last month.

Thirteen of the witnesses, including Sean’s mother Pauline Bharath, who completed her evidence on Monday, have testified in person from virtual court facilities at the San Fernando High Court.

Sean Luke went missing in 2006 and his body was found 2 days later in an abandoned sugarcane field, which bounds his community.

An autopsy revealed he died from internal injuries arising out of being sodomised with a cane stalk.

The trial is expected to resume tomorrow.

TTPS says it can only do its work if people cooperate

Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith

The police service says it can only do its work if people cooperate so that there can be benefits for all.

Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith says the information received by officers in connection to guns and drugs only helps reduce crime.

He notes that people only speak when police kill suspects but go mum when other crimes occur.

The Commissioner of Police maintains that while some may disagree, his position stands when it comes to criminals firing at police officers.

He says the TTPS must defend itself with precision and within the confines of the law.

He also slams persons who believe that the pandemic will reduce crime.

He says the TTPS needs the support of the population because there is a lot to be accomplished.

Seismic activity at La Soufriere volcano low

La Soufriere Volcano, St. Vincent & the Grenadines

Seismic activity at the La Soufrière volcano has remained low since the tremor associated with the explosion and ash venting 2 days ago.

The scientists monitoring the volcano are indicating that over the last 24 hours only a few long-period, hybrid and volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded with no further tremor.

The Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies said in its last update yesterday that the volcano continues to erupt and is still dangerous.

It said the pattern of seismic activity over the last few days is typical of the growth and destruction of lava domes.

According to the SRC explosions with accompanying ash fall, of similar or larger magnitude, can occur with little or no warning.

The volcano remains at alert level red.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves is talking about the cost of this disaster, particularly as it relates to evacuees.

Dr. Gonsalves says there are also charitable organisations from outside of the country providing aid to affected people.

Over the weekend the Prime Minister said residents of northern St. Vincent, including communities north of the Rabacca Dry River, will be allowed to return to their homes, when the eruption of La Soufriere ends and the all clear is given.

He said there are persons who feel the communities in the volcano red zone in the northeast, as well as orange zone in the northwest, should be abandoned and reserved for agriculture.

But Dr. Gonsalves said as far as his party is concerned north of the Rabacca Dry River, is the soul of the nation.

He said abandoning such areas is not on the cards.
