A total of 75 have so far been arrested for breaching the curfew among those held, a 15 year old boy

A 15-year-old boy is one of 50 people held for breaching the curfew now in place.

Among those held on the third night of the curfew were maxi taxi operators and the teenager who was reportedly on a joyride, after borrowing a relative’s vehicle.

The Northern Division saw the most arrests with 15 held.

It was within that division the 15-year-old was detained.

He is to be charged as well with operating a vehicle without a driver’s licence.

Thirteen arrests were made in the Arima district and 12 were held in Tobago.

Nine were arrested in the eastern division including 2 women.

Western and southwestern divisions saw 5 and 4 arrests respectively.

Port of Spain and northeastern divisions recorded one arrest each.

This brings the total number of persons held for breach of curfew to 75.

Parliament to debate extension of the State Of Emergency next Monday

Members of the House of Representatives will next Monday consider an extension of the State Of Emergency, called by the Prime Minister and proclaimed by the President.

Confirmation of this has come from Attorney General Faris Al Rawi via TV6 news yesterday.

Mr. Al Rawi said it is a simple process as stated in the constitution of the country.

He said via its majority, the government could get an additional extension of 3 months for the SOE for a combined total of 6 months.

Any further extension would require a three-fifths majority vote of the two houses of parliament.

Opposition MP Dr. Roodal Moonilal said yesterday his bench would be fully engaged in the debate next week.

Dr. Moonilal said in principle there can be little objection to a State Of Emergency and a curfew

But Mr. Al Rawi said the 9pm to 5am curfew came from the medical advisers to the government.

Man whose photo was published on the front page of Guardian Newspaper as being dead is actually alive

Rodney Baker, the man whose photo was published on the front page of the Guardian Newspaper as a recent related death is alive.

The error was made on the popular daily newspaper yesterday.

Today, Mr. Baker says the error has traumatized his family.

Mr. Baker and his wife contracted the virus last month.

She died of the virus but Mr. Baker survived.

He is currently in home self-isolation after spending weeks at hospital.

Speaking on The Morning Show on i95.5fm earlier, Mr. Baker said he prefers not to take the legal route but would if he has to.

Mr. Baker who is the father of 2 children said the loss of his wife has already dealt his family a significant blow.

He is hopeful the error will be corrected.

T&T government says it is already lobbying for part of vaccine doses to be shared by US

The Trinidad and Tobago government says it is already lobbying for part of the doses of COVID-19 vaccines earmarked by the United States to be shared globally. 

President Joe Biden made the announcement during a press briefing on Monday.

Yesterday CARICOM and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne revealed his government has agents working on getting part of the donation.

Dr. Browne also took note of the number of doses to be shared. 

The US Food and Drug Administration also recently approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents ages 12 to 15.

100,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine arrive in Trinidad and Tobago

One hundred thousand doses of the Sinopharm vaccine have arrived in Trinidad and Tobago.

The vaccine manufactured by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products Company Limited arrived at 1:09am today.

The Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh was on hand to receive the doses donated by the government of China.

The arrival of the vaccine doses came hours after the country recorded the most deaths and new infections since the start of this pandemic.

The Ministry of Health said 23 people died and there were 601 new infections.

The new cases were detected in samples taken between May 13th and May 16th.

The deceased patients are 7 elderly males, 5 elderly females, 1 middle-aged male and 2 middle-aged females.

They had comorbidities.

Also among the dead, 1 elderly male, 2 elderly females, 2 middle aged males and three middle-aged females.

From this group there were no comorbidities.

So far this month 148 deaths have been recorded.

A total of 6,328 tested positive since March 2020.

In Tobago 6 patients were discharged but there were 25 new cases yesterday.

The total number of active cases in Tobago now stands at 94.

There are a total of 338 confirmed cases of corona in Tobago and the death toll stands at 4.

1,000 grams of marijuana found by police in Blanchisseuse

Police find 1,000 grams of marijuana in Blanchisseuse.

Officers of the Blanchisseuse Police Station found the drug yesterday.

The officers were conducting an exercise at the time of the find.

The exercise was conducted between the hours of 1pm and 6pm.

The officers say as a result of information received they went to La Fillette Village Blanchisseuse and observed a man along the roadway approximately 100 meters away.

Police say when they approached the man; he dropped a large black garbage bag and ran into some nearby bushes making good his escape.

When examined, the bag was found to contain a quantity of plant like material resembling that of marijuana, which weighed 1000 grams.

Firearms Amendment Bill 2021 has been passed

The Firearms Amendment Bill 2021 gets the support of the Opposition and the government.

The Bill, which caters to the use of pepper spray, was passed in the Upper House yesterday.

However, 2 Independent Senators abstained from the vote.

In his winding up of debate on the Bill yesterday, Attorney General Faris Al Rawi says the legislation gives victims a fighting chance.

Earlier Independent Senator Deoroop Teemal said training must be given to holders of the device in order to ensure proper use.

Senator Teemal said the legal restrictions on pepper spray might prevent it from protecting the targets of crime.

Israel strikes Hamas Tunnels

Israel strikes Hamas Tunnels in the deadliest 24 hours in the conflict.

At least 200 Palestinians, including dozens of children, and 10 Israelis, including 2 children, have been killed so far.

US President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last night, their 2nd phone call since Saturday.

Mr. Biden is expressing support for a ceasefire, which comes as fellow democrats are urging him to do more to stop the violence.

According to the readout of the call, Mr. Biden “reiterated his firm support for Israel’s right to defend itself against indiscriminate rocket attacks.”

Mr. Biden also encouraged Israel to make every effort to ensure the protection of innocent civilians.

Mr. Biden expressed his support for a ceasefire and discussed US engagement with Egypt and other partners.

2 teens among 9 arrested and charged with stealing marijuana from a police station evidence room

Police in Grenada have arrested and charged 9 people, including 2 juveniles, after an estimated $750,000 EC worth of marijuana, to be used as evidence in ongoing court matters disappeared from a station in the northern parish of St. Patrick.

Police say the 9 males were arrested and charged over the last weekend.

They appeared in court yesterday.

The accused are Kiman and Kimani Alexander, Ron and Ronni Staniscluas were granted bail in the sum of $50,000 dollars each.

They also have to report to a police station everyday between 6am and 5pm.

Carlos Williams, Marvin Jeremiah and Travis Fullerton were granted bail in the sum of $120,000 dollar each.

They are to hand over all travel documents.

All the accused must return to court on May 26th.

According to a statement from the Community Relations Department, officers assigned to the station noticed the drug missing over a period of time and took remedial action. 

It says consequently, investigations revealed that individuals fished out marijuana from the rear end of the building due to structural deficiencies.

40 cases of Brazilian variant recorded in T&T

Forty cases of the Brazilian variant of COVID-19 are recorded in this country.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram gave the statistics at the COVID-19 media conference yesterday.

The CMO also revealed new facilities are being prepared to accommodate COVID patients requiring Intensive Care.

Yesterday the death toll in country climbed to 294.

Nine more COVID-19 patients died.

The Ministry of Health said the dead are 4 elderly males, 1 middle-aged male, 2 elderly females and 2 middle-aged females, all with comorbidities

The Ministry counted 294 new positive cases.

The Ministry explained that these numbers represent samples taken during the period May 13th to 16th and not the previous 24 hours.

It said there are 388 persons in hospital while 10,370 have recovered.

The number of active cases in the country is 5,885.

In Tobago there are 33 positive cases at the Scarborough Regional Hospital at Fort King George and 1 positive patient at Scarborough Hospital in Signal Hill.

Twenty-three patients are at step down facilities in Tobago.

Five thousand and eighty-two people are in home self isolation.
