Manufacturing and automotive dealers sectors re-open today

The manufacturing sector re-opens today.

The sector has been shut down for the past months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last weekend during the COVID-19 media update, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley announced the lifting of restrictions on the sector.

Automotive dealers will also reopen today.

In a statement the Ministry of Health yesterday it was stated both sectors would reopen temporarily from Monday to Sunday.

The government is also allowing members of the public, in groups of no more than 5, to engage in restricted outdoor activities.

This goes into effect on July 19th the day food services will be allowed to resume.

Dr. Rowley said there would be some limitations.

He pleaded with people to be patient as his government slowly lifts restrictions aimed at protecting people.

Robocop’s stepson murdered

Reports that the stepson of murdered reputed gang leader Selwyn “Robocop” Alexis is dead.

Police say Colin Kudoes Alexis was gunned down in Enterprise, Chaguanas last night.

According to reports, Mr. Alexis of Railway Road, was in his vehicle at Jack Terrace at around 8pm when a gunman walked up to and opened fire.

Mr. Alexis, who attempted to jump out of the vehicle’s window, was found slumped halfway on the door and inside the vehicle, by residents.

Police said he went to purchase grocery items before he was killed.

Police are yet to determine a motive for his murder but investigators said he was a known firearm offender.

And investigations continue into the murder of a 28-year-old man in Morvant.

Police say Dan Adams was at a barbershop in Building A, Paradise Heights, Morvant, at around 2.20pm when he was attacked.

Residents called the police, who visited the scene.

Mr. Adams was a resident of Maracas, St. Joseph.

No motive was established for the killing.

COVID death toll now at 918

The Health Ministry announces an additional 15 deaths due to COVID-19, along with 115 cases detected from samples taken between July 3rd and 6th.

The death toll is now 918.

In its COVID-19 update on Wednesday, the Ministry said the people who died were 6 elderly men, 3 elderly women, 2 middle-aged men, 1 middle-aged woman, and 1 young adult man, all with comorbidities, as well as 2 middle-aged men without comorbidities.

There are 6,244 active cases.

Since March 2020, there have been 33,920 cases of COVID-19, of which 26,758 have recovered.

Returning nationals who lie about their COVID status will be slapped with fines or jail

People seeking to enter this country when the borders are opened next week would face stiff penalties if they present false information to the authorities.

They face a maximum fine of $350,000 and 1 year in jail.

Attorney General Faris Al Rawi yesterday moved the Quarantine Amendment Bill 2021, which was accepted and approved by the Senate.

Mr. Al Rawi told the house the regulations are necessary to help operationalise the law.

However, Opposition Senator Jayanti Lutchmedial feels the penalty is too harsh.

Senator Lutchmedial noted the almost 5,000% increase over what exist.

The Opposition Senator also said a remedy of enforcement instead of fines.

Commissioner of Police warns would be protesters

Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith says he has received information about a planned protest carded for Friday.

He says it has come to his attention that there are persons who are planning to demonstrate by way of a motorcade on Friday July 9th.

However, the Commissioner says he has not given permission for any such event.

And he says such permission will not be granted at this time, as the country is in a State Of Emergency, dealing with an invisible enemy, COVID-19.

Commissioner Griffith says he is planning to contact the persons who are planning the event where his officers would question them.

He says that recently, a Member of Parliament, called on members of the public to come out and assemble during a protest, which again, was in breach of the laws. Commissioner Griffith says his officers have been briefed and instructed to do all that is necessary to disperse any such planned procession.

Government assures it will not allow operators to hike fuel prices

Government is giving the assurance that it will not allow gas station operators to hike fuel prices at the pumps.

Energy Minister Stuart Young yesterday gave the assurance after Opposition Senator Wade Mark claimed liberalisation of the fuel market would result in high gas prices.

However Minister Young said the Opposition was about injecting fear into the population.

The Minister was speaking in the Senate on the Finance Bill.

Minister Young said there would be the introduction of competition despite what Senator Mark was trying to project.

He said there would be competition at the pumps because one gas station owners purchase their fuel from NP or Unipet; they can put a profit margin on it.

According to the Minister right now the market is capped.

TTPS detain one of its own

The police service detains one of its own and 2 women in connection with illegal arms, ammunition and stolen jewelry.

A statement from the TTPS says the trio was arrested in the southern division with 85 rounds of assorted ammunition, a quantity of jewelry and a .38 Special Revolver.

According to the release PCs Sandy and Maynard were on mobile patrol in the Debe Trace area at around 2:30 am on Monday when they observed a white Toyota Axio proceeding along the roadway.

The vehicle was stopped and the occupants, ages 30, 22, and 20, as well as the vehicle, were searched by the officers and the items seized.

The 85 rounds of ammunition seized by the officers comprised 55 rounds of 9MM, 17 rounds of .38 Special, 7 rounds of 45, 4 rounds of 5.56 and 1 round each of .40 and .92 ammunition.

Charges are expected to be laid later today.

The group will also face charges for breaking the curfew.

Enquiries are continuing.

Government is questioned on its source of gasoline when the market opens

Questions are raised over where the government intends to source its gas from, when it opens the market.

While the Finance Minister describes Opposition queries as ridiculous.

During debate on the Finance Bill yesterday, Opposition Senator Jerlene John said the State must clear the air on its suppliers.

Ms. John further questioned how the prices would be set.

She says the Bill is mum on that matter.

However in response Finance Minister Colm Imbert said the Opposition is trying to make the debate about the economy and that is wrong.

Earlier in the debate Energy Minister Stuart Young said the Opposition is trying to inject fear into the population.

Haiti’s Head of State is assassinated

Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise

Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise has been shot and killed by gunmen, some of whom are believed to be foreigners.

Prime Minister Claude Joseph made the announcement earlier today.

Mr. Moise’s wife was also wounded during the incident this morning.

She has been hospitalised.

Prime minister Joseph has called on the population for calm and indicated that the police and the army would maintain order.

The Prime Minister has described the attackers as mercenaries.

The attack took place at around 1:00am.

Reports say the group of unidentified individuals, some of whom spoke in Spanish, attacked the private residence of the President of the Republic and thus mortally wounded the Head of State.

Prime Minister Joseph described the assassination as “an odious, inhuman and barbaric act”.

He said the security situation in the country is under the control of the Haitian National Police and the Haitian Armed Forces.

The Prime Minister said all measures are taken to guarantee the continuity of the State and protect the nation.

Democracy and the republic will win.

No bail for a man accused of sexual assault of a teenage girl

A Magistrate says no to bail for a 36-year-old man charged with serious indecency, sexual touching, and 6 counts of sexual penetration of a minor.

The accused appeared virtually before Senior Magistrate Alicia Chankar at the Point Fortin Magistrates’ Court yesterday when he was remanded into custody.

He was arrested after the 17-year-old girl and a relative made a report to the South Western Child Protection Unit

The teenager alleged that the man had sexual intercourse with her between the period March 2018 and April 2020.

WPC Renn-Lashley of the Southwestern CPU conducted an investigation, which resulted in the man being charged on Saturday 3rd July 2021.

The Point Fortin man was arrested last Friday.

AG Inspector Knutt, Sgt. Charles and AG Cpl. Callender supervised the investigation.

The accused is expected to reappear on July 30th.
