Industrial Court says, TSTT workers will stay on the job at least for now

The retrenchment at TSTT has hit a snag.

The Industrial Court yesterday granted a stay of retrenchment.

The company yesterday issued letters of retrenchment to 468 workers.

The Communication Workers Union represents 376.

President of the Industrial Court, Deborah Thomas Felix granted leave for TSTT to file its response to the union’s claims.

The court has ruled that the 376 workers who received letters should report for duty today.

But Secretary General of the CWU Clyde Elder says the workers are hurt and feel betrayed.

Last evening after the court’s ruling Mr. Elder said TSTT has been singing the same song over the past years, but it is dishonest in its utterances.

He feels the government is on a mission.

TSTT has said there is a need to restructure with urgency.

The majority State-owned company said yesterday 403 of the workers would receive payment inn lieu of the regulatory 45 days notice.

The hearing of the claims has been set for June 14th.

Its not true …the Maha Sabha says we do not support child marriage or abuse

The Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha is seeking to set the record straight.

It say it does not support child marriage or abuse of children.

On Indian Arrival Day yesterday, President General of the Maha Sabha Pundit Krishna Rambally said politicians are skewing the position of the organisation.

He applauded the leader of the Opposition Kamla Persad Bissessar for appointing temporary Senators from the organisation to debate the issue of child marriage.

At an event to mark the national holiday, Pundit Rambally explained the Maha Sabha’s position was clear.

He said it is deceptive to make a connection between child marriage and abuse of children at homes funded by the State.

National Security Minister assures death on high seas of Venezuelan baby is being probed

Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds

Parliament is told an investigation into the death of Venezuelan baby Yaelvis Santoyo Sarabia is underway.

The 9-month-old child was shot and killed on February 5th during a reported confrontation between the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard and a vessel, which was carrying illegal Venezuelan migrants.

The TTCG said the migrant vessel was intercepted on the south coast of Trinidad.

Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds told the Senate yesterday both the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force are jointly probing the matter.

Minister Hinds was fielding questions from Opposition Senator Wade Mark.

Minister Hinds also explained why he could not give more details on the matter.

The TTGC said its personnel fired on the engines of the migrant boat because it attempted to ram its vessel, and officers were fearful for their lives and acted in self-defense.
