PNM accused of returning county to days of “Massa”

Movement for Social Justice, Political Leader David Abdullah

The Peoples National Movement government is accused of seeking to return this country to the days of “Massa”.

But the Movement for Social Justice is telling members of the working class they must not allow this to happen.

In delivering his Labour Day message to the nation this morning, Political Leader David Abdullah said the 1937 victory of the Labour Movement is under threat.

He says fewer workers are unionised today, than in the past 25 years.

He said this was as a result of union busting by the current administration.

Mr. Abdullah called on the working class to stand up and fight against what he termed the “PNM Massa”.

The country celebrates Labour Day on June 19th.

Find the killers … A friend of the Deosaran family makes an appeal to the police

Pastor Clive Dottin

A call for the police to expeditiously pursue the killer or killers of Morouga couple Nigel Chance and Surita Aruna Deosaran.

The call is coming from Pastor Clive Dottin who is close to the family, and prayed with Ms. Deosaran days before her killing on Wednesday.

This morning Pastor Dottin recalled the attempt on Ms. Deosaran’s life 3 months ago.

The incident in March left Ms. Deosaran paralysed.

Pastor Dottin said it is clear those who tried to kill her 3 months ago returned on Wednesday, to complete the job.

Police have no motive for the double murder.

Relatives of 36-year-old Ms. Deosaran and 44-year-old Nigel Chance are baffled over the circumstances.

The couple’s bullet riddled bodies were found at their St. Mary’s Village home at 4:30pm.

It is reported a white AD Wagon was seen leaving the yard after explosions were heard.

Ms. Deosaran’s mother Carmen Deosaran spoke with the Express yesterday.

She said she heard the shots.

Police are saying they found an abandoned AD Wagon, which they believe, was used in the double murder.

Market vendor who spent 2 months in jail during SOE awarded $241,000 in damages

A market vendor, who spent almost 2 months in jail during the 2011 State Of Emergency, after being charged with being a gang member, is awarded just over $241,000 in damages.

Justice Avason Quinlan-Williams ruled in favor of Omardath Dookie in a malicious prosecution lawsuit against the Attorney General.

Attorney Kevin Ratiram represented him.

In her ruling, justice Quinlan-Williams found that the charging officer was not a credible witness.

In his witness statement, Mr. Dookie recalled that he was home when 2 police vehicles pulled up and PC Rainy Dhill, who had previously charged him with possession of a knife, arrested him.

When asked why he was being arrested, Mr. Dookie said the officer asked him for 2 other men.

Mr. Dookie said he was taken to the Barataria Police Station, put in a cell, charged with being a member of the Devanand Gang of Evelyn Trace, El Socorro and denied bail after pleading not guilty.

He was kept in a 10×10 cell with 4 other prisoners, with a bucket for a toilet.

On October 19th, 2011, he was freed after the prosecutor indicated that they did not have enough evidence to prosecute him.

In giving her oral ruling, the judge said the State had not shown that there was any reasonable and probable cause to arrest and charge Mr. Dookie. She also found that PC Dhill had acted with malice in charging him.

No flour shortage says Ministry of Trade & Industry

The Ministry of Trade and Industry assures there is absolutely no shortage of flour and neither is there any looming shortage.

Responding directly to the possible shortage of flour as noted by Sheik Lisha Compnay Limited in the Sunday Express.

The Ministry says Sheik Lisha Imports Flour from Turkey and their market share and those of other importers collectively are under 1% of local sales.

In a media release the ministry notes that 99 % of flour consumed in Trinidad and Tobago is manufactured locally by 2 millers who have acted prudently and responsibly by securing their grain shipments for the rest of 2022.

The Ministry says those millers have assured and advised that this measure may have an impact on their cost of production but the security of wheat and other grain supplies remains of paramount importance.

There is, in fact, certainty of supply and there is absolutely no shortage of flour neither is there any looming shortage.
