PROTESTING PARENTS DESCRIBE THE EDUCATION MINISTER AND POLICE AS UNCARING… AND INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUES INTO THE BOMB THREATS AT SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Parents and guardians of at the Belmont Secondary School may keep their children away from classes.

A group of anxious parents yesterday staged a demonstration demanding better security at the school after armed men beat a safety officer at the school.

The incident occurred around the time when bomb threat emails were sent to Secondary Schools across Trinidad and Tobago

Parent Louise Charles says children are not safe.

The parents also took the police and the Minister of Education to task on the situation.

Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby Dolly is reported as saying MTS will fix the breaches around the school this week.

Meanwhile investigators continue their probe into the bomb threats at Secondary Schools.

The Trinidad and Tobago police service is said to be actively pursuing several leads in apprehending the person or persons responsible.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Curt Simon says the probe is at a delicate stage.

Anonymous bomb threats were sent to several schools across the country at around 8 am last Friday.

The situation caused major disruptions at almost all schools nationwide.

Yesterday DCP Simon told News Centre Five the probe continues.

Meanwhile the Energy Minister last Friday described the bomb threats as an act of terror.

Stuart Young told the parliament a crime was committed against the nations children.

He said the government is clear in condemning what took place.

The former National Security Minister was giving support to his successor, Fitzgerald Hinds during debate on a motion of no confidence in the matter.

THE MURDER OF RONNIE PIERRE IS NOW ENGAGING THE ATTENTION OF POLICE

Police are searching for the killers of Ronnie ‘bull’ Pierre

He was shot dead near the Munroe road Hindu Primary School in Cunupia yesterday.

The incident caused panic and trauma among students and staff members.

His killing took place in an open lot of land near the school.

It happened at the end of the morning recess period.

Reports say the killers arrived in the area at around 10:15am in two Toyota Hilux vehicles; there were five occupants in the two vehicles.

They found Mr. Pierre, and shot him several times before they fled the area.

Mr. Pierre died at the scene.

The situation forced the early dismissal of school.

In a memo issued to parents shortly after the incident, principal Rishi Maharaj said all students and staff were safe.

He said after the shots were heard, the children were confined to their classrooms with their teachers.

The killing is said to have taken the murder toll in the country to 199.

T&T NATIONAL ABDUCTED IN BARBADOS

Member of Parliament, Dr. Roodal Moonilal

Opposition MP Dr. Roodal Moonilal is demanding answers surrounding what has been dubbed an international abduction, of a Trinidad and Tobago national in Barbados.

Yesterday at a service marking the 34th Anniversary of the opposition United National Congress, Dr. Moonilal raised the issue involving Brent Thomas.

Dr. Moonilal said, Barbados also needs to say more on the incident.

Deputy political leader of the UNC Jerlene John also wants to know more.

She said the incident reeks and the country should be appalled.

TEACHERS TO STAY AWAY FROM CLASSES AT BELMONT SECONDAY IF SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS ARE NOT IMPROVED

Teachers put the Education Ministry on notice. They say classes will be halted at Belmont Secondary School today, if their security is not guaranteed.  

Their union has instructed the educators, to sign a refusal to work document when they report for school this morning, their demands are not met.

It follows an assault on a school Safety Officer by two gun-toting men who stormed the compound on Friday.

The two reportedly entered the school through a breach near the farm area. 

The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association says teachers, students and other members of staff are concerned for their safety.

President Martin Lum Kin says if the Education Ministry fails to act, teachers would take action.

Speaking with News Centre Five, yesterday, Mr. Lum Kin said, the Belmont teachers have been working under unsafe conditions for years now and this cannot be allowed to continue.

He called on the Ministry to step up.

Belmont police are probing the matter.

Meanwhile, on the issue of bomb threats, Mr. Lum Kin said his members are prepared should the issue rear its ugly head again.

But he said they must also be given permission to dismiss school should the situation arise.

He also assured students whose exams were affected by the bomb threats would be given another opportunity.

On Friday a number of bomb threats were issued via email to several schools across the country.

The situation led to the early dismissal of all schools.

The Cyber Crime Unit of the TTPS is investigating the matter.

STAND YOUR GROUND LEGISLATION, A BAD PROPOSAL…SO SAYS PRIME MINISTER KEITH ROWLEY

Prime Minister Keith Rowley is rejecting “Stand Your Ground” legislation which is being proposed by the leader of the opposition

The suggested legislation is aimed at dealing with the spate of home invasions in the country.

Kamla Persad Bissessar has been proposing tough and punitive measures to stem the crime, which has in some instances led to death.

Yesterday in Toco, Dr. Rowley said such laws are dangerous.

The legislation, as it exist in some parts of the United States allows people to use deadly force if they are faced with threats posed by home invasions.

Prime Minister Rowley is telling, Persad Bissessar don’t even think about it.

The Prime Minister recalled a break-in at his private residence, which he says could have gone in different directions.

It was his way of also rejecting the claim that bandits of African descent have been targeting people of East Indian descent in Aranguez.

The Prime Minister was addressing a sports and family day event hosted by his People’s National Movement yesterday.

MINISTER OF HEALTH TERRANCE DEYALSINGH DISMISSES CLAIMS LINKING HIM TO LANDS IN THE EAST…

A denial from Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh, of any connection to land near the Cumuto /Mazanillla highway extension project.

The claim of opposition Mp Saddam Hosein earlier this week is being described as incorrect.

On Monday night Mr. Hosein said, the Minister has had to recuse himself from cabinet deliberations.

At the Monday night forum of the United National Congress the Barataria San Juan MP called on Minister Deylaisngh to give answers.

However in a response yesterday Minister Deyalsingh said, he notes with utter shock, the statements made by Mr Hosein.

He said he wishes to put on the public record neither he nor any member of his family own any land, or have any interest in a parcel of land near the Cumuto Manzanilla highway.

He said the matter of recusals in cabinet deliberations is the honourable, ethical and correct thing to do.

The Minister explained recusals are designed to protect the public’s interest and are an integral part of good governance.

He said the public is advised that matters of recusals should not be weaponized to deliberately mislead the public.

Prime minister Dr. Keith Rowley turns down recent invitations to discuss crime.

Former Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith and Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar have said they are open to discussions with anyone in the face of escalating crime.

United national congress representative for Naparima, Rodney Charles raised the matter in the parliament yesterday.

Dr. Rowley also said no to any meeting other than in parliament with the opposition.

The Prime Minister was posed a question on his National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds whom he defended.

They were speaking during the questions to the Prime Minister segment of yesterday’s sitting.

AN EARLY MORNING MURDER IN TOBAGO…DONNIEL THOMAS IS THE VICTIM… ALONG WITH AN ONGOING GANG WAR IN TRINIDAD

Donneil Thomas is the fourth murder victim in Tobago so far this year

Mr. Thomas was from Signal Hill. 

It is reported he was about to leave home for work this morning when he was shot multiple times. 

He died on the spot. 

The father of one was an employee with the Division of Infrastructure.

Tobago police are investigating. 

And police believe the murder of fruit vendor Omardath Dillon Joseph is the result of an ongoing gang war.

Mr. Joseph was shot dead yesterday afternoon in Caroni.

He was with another man under a tent off the Caroni Savannah Road near the roundabout when they were both shot.

Two men are reported to have alighted a vehicle and fired several shots,

Mr. Joseph was hit multiple times.

He died on the spot.

The other man was up to last evening critically wounded.

Relatives of the murdered man arrived on the scene and were at a loss over his killing.

Police say the shooting may be connected to a series of killings in St. Augustine,  including that of 16 year old Darshan Ramnath.

MIND YOUR DAMN BUSINESS …THA CHIEF SECRETARY TELLS THE PRIME MINISTER

Chief Secretary Farley Augustine hits back at the call for a fresh election in Tobago.

Last Sunday Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley told Mr. Augustine and his team to take Tobago back to the polls.

He said if the Chief Secretary wants the respect of the central government and the people of Tobago an early election is prudent, considering the fallouts in the progressive democratic patriots.

But yesterday Mr. Augustine called on the prime minister to stay out of Tobago business.

He attached to his Facebook comment a video of the prime minister speaking on a platform of the Peoples National Movement.

Mr. Augustine then tells the prime minister to mind his damn business.

The video was from a political meeting of the PNM in Mason Hall Tobago, back in 2021.

Last Sunday’s media release from the Prime Minister said through a series of expulsions, and withdrawals the Executive Of The Assembly, has ended up in the hands of a self-serving group of independents.

He said a brand new political party is now spawned with the intention to take its place within the walls of the THA.

Dr. Rowley said if that happens it would run counter to the lofty principles being espoused by Mr. Augustine.

A TRIPLE MURDER IN SOUTH TRINIDAD..A FATHER AND SON ARE AMONG THE DEAD

Three men are shot and killed in penal.

The identities of the men have been given as Anand Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Rolly Hosien.

Reports say the incident took place at Charlo Village around 4:30 this morning.

News Centre five understands relatives of the men were awoken after hearing a commotion in the yard of their home.

They say, two men dressed in police tactical gear armed with guns ordered the men to kneel down, and then fired several gunshots at the men.

Upon checking, relatives say the men were found lying in close to each other bare back in a pool of blood unresponsive.

Police were called to the scene.
