POLICE ASSOCIATION DESCRIBES PRIME MINISTER’S STATEMENTS AS RECKLESS AND IRRESPONSIBLE

Police Social and Welfare Association ASP Gideon Dickson

The rank and file of the police service will not support the establishment of vetting units, as is being proposed by the Government.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said, last Saturday the units are aimed at removing rogue elements in the service.

President of the police Social and Welfare Association ASP Gideon Dickson says, the Prime Minister’s plan is reckless.

He says there is no way the Association can back such a plan.

According to ASP Dickson, there are rouge officers but at least two existing units carry out such a function.

On the morning show on i95.5fm today ASP Dickson said, the Prime Minister has to be responsible when making certain statements.

Dr. Rowley has said, Government is willing to pay money for officers to keep their integrity as part of the units.

ANOTHER MURDER THIS TIME IN ST JAMES…KYLE SOO PING CHOW IN THE VICTIM

Three killings are recorded between last night and this morning, the most recent at 5 o’clock this morning.

Homicide officers are said, to be on the scene but reports are that Kyle Soo Ping Chow was shot dead in St. James.

It is said, resident of Bombay Street were jolted by explosions and called police.

Officers arrived to find Mr Soo Ping Chow dead on the side of the road.

He was a resident of Belle Vue Street St James.

And there is a report that a man was shot at around 7:30 this morning at Martinez Street, Old Road Arima.

The identity of the victim is yet to be released.

It is unclear if he is wounded or deceased.  

Meanwhile last night two men were shot dead in Samaroo Village Arima.

One of the victims is identified as 38 year old Reuben Jessie Jones and so far, the other is known only as Boyo.

He was reportedly from Trou Macque Laventille.

Mister jones was from Mendez Drive Samaroo village.

At around 10:20 last evening residents reported hearing explosions.

They later found two men lying on the floor of a house at number 14 Mendez Drive.

The men were shot in their heads and upper bodies.

 Meanwhile, police have held two men in connection with the killing of forty-year-old Dillon De Silva In Cocorite yesterday afternoon.

At around 12:30 pm Mr. De Silva was standing in the yard of his Western Main Road home when two gunmen attacked him.

They shot him several times killing him on the spot.

PRIME MINISTER DR KEITH ROWLEY SAYS THE PROCUMENT LAWS ARE CREATING STUMBLING BLOCKS FOR THE STATE

Members of Parliament are being summoned during the mid year break to fix the now contentious procurement law

The law has become a major headache for the Keith Rowley administration after the country hosted the recent Caricom summit and 50th Anniversary celebrations.

After the events ended last week questions were raised about the government’s exemption bid.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley last night said, the law as it is creates stumbling blocks for the state and it must be changed.

As his Finance Minister explained late last week, the Prime Minister indicated the law has the potential to stand in the way of progress and must be amended.

He said, the opposition is waiting for the opportunity shut down the Government by using the flaws in the legislation.

Dr. Rowley insisted, that would not be allowed especially with two very important international events approaching.

He recalled a similar situation involving the controversial “Section 34”, under the Kamla Persad Bissessar Government several years ago.

The Prime Minister was addressing a political meeting, of his Peoples National Movement in El Dorado.

IN SPRINGVALE… A GANG CAUGHT ON CAMERA …MP KHADIJAH AMEEN CALLS FOR HELP.

A drastic in increase in home invasions and robberies the St. Augustine constituency is causing some worry for MP Khadijah Ameen.

She says that bandits and criminals are now patrolling in gangs, late at night and early in the morning scoping out the homes of residents.

Ms. Ameen says several incidents were caught on CCTV cameras by residents in the spring village, Pasea and Valsayn South areas.

Ms. Ameen says, there has been a spike in serious crimes including murders and it seems the TTPS is overwhelmed.

She says members of the public are scared while Police Commissioner Erla Harewood Christoper remains silent.

She says, Commissioner Harewood Christopher must break her silence.

Ms. Ameen says, she plans to continue a series of meetings with the police following those successfully held in the Bamboo and St. Augustine South areas.

She says that her intention is to facilitate the police and foster their engagement with the communities, through the setting up of neighborhood watch groups.

She wants to develop these bonds throughout the constituency, but emphasizes areas prone to criminal invasions.

The MP further identified praedial larceny as a growing threat in her constituency as farmers continue to lose their crops overnight, which directly affects their livelihoods.

A BRAZEN DAYLIGHT ARSON ATTACK ON THE FAMILY HOME OF MURDER VICTIM REYNOLD VICTOR

The home of Reynold Victor’s mother has been firebombed, 24 hours after he was gunned down near the Croisee in San Juan.

It is believed the attacks on 43-year-old Mr. Victor and his mother’s house linked to gang warfare over CEPEP contracts in the Morvant area.

While Reynold Victor was killed on Tuesday at least three others were wounded.

Yesterday police confirmed that the second Caledonia Morvant home of Reynold Victor’s mother, was attacked by about ten men, seen on CCTV footage.

The incident occurred at around 11:30 yesterday morning.

According to the reports surrounding the incident, Mr. Victor’s mother was at home when she saw the ten men running towards the house.

CCTV footage showed, one of the men carrying a crate with what are believed to be Molotov cocktails.

Another man who was standing guard had a rifle.

The Molotov cocktails were thrown at the house setting fire to it.

The men then fled the scene.

Fire fighters went to the scene and were able to put out the blaze, but it is said half of the building was destroyed.

Damage is estimated to be about one million dollars.

OPERATIONS BACK TO NORMAL AT THE ERIC WILLIAMS MEDICAL SCIENCES COMPLEX…

Normal operations resume at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.

Yesterday patients in the intensive care unit of had to be move because of a power outage.

A mal-functioning transformer cut power to the department, forcing the evacuation.

It is reported other medical services were also affected at the hospital.

This morning Chief Executive Officer of the North Central Regional Health Authority Davlin Thomas confirmed, the incident and explained what actually happened.

Mr. Thomas said, a second transformer was accessed last night and all operations are back to normal.  

The CEO further explained, that the hospital had access to nine ambulances to transfer the patients.

He added that there was power on the wards because generators kicked in.

Mr. Thomas said, the nearby St. Joseph Health Centre was told to remain open for a full 24 hours to attend to patients.

ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER OF POLICE ADMITS GUN CRIMES ARE ON THE INCREASE…

Crimes committed with the use of guns are said to be on the rise.

This is revealed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Winston Maharaj.

He points to the 5 weekend murders in Maraval, Freeport, Chaguanas and Barataria

However, ASP Maharaj says, a number of people have been arrested and guns have been seized by police in connection with the incidents.

He assures members of the TTPS are fighting back.

However, ASP Maharaj says, it appears the criminal elements are no longer fearful of law enforcement officials.

He says this calls for a measured approach to crime and criminality.

ASP Maharaj is also concerned about the number of illegal guns coming into the country.

He questioned, who has the resources to purchase and ship guns?

WITHOUT SPECIFICS….THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL SECURITY ADMITS SOME DATA HAS BEEN LOST TO CYBER CRIMINALS…

The public is put on notice “Ransom Ware” attacks are on the increase in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Cyber Security Incident Response Team of Ministry Of National Security released a public advisory, urging the all members of the public and all organizations to take the necessary precautions to mitigate against rising “ransom ware” attacks.

The ministry of digital transformation issued the statement.

Head of the Cyber Security Incident Response Team Angus Smith, confirms cyber attacks have increased.  

This latest warning follows what the Attorney General’s Office described on Saturday as the detection of a cyber attacks on the network of its office and that of the Ministry of Legal Affairs.

Via a statement the Attorney General’s office said, the attack resulted in the temporary disruption of operations and certain associated divisions.

The AG’s office said some data was lost.

Mr. Smith confirmed the losses but did not specify.

“Ransom ware” is a type of malicious software used by cybercriminals.

They then demand ransom money, from their victims in exchange for releasing the data.

A 24 YEAR OLD MAN IS THE COUNTRY’S LATEST MURDER VICTIM…WHILE A PENSIONER SUCCUMBS TO ASSAULT AT THE HANDS OF HOME INVADERS.

Three hundred and two murders have been recorded so far this year.

The latest victim is Kalum Williams.

He sustained gunshot wounds while at 6th avenue in Barataria at around 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

24-year-old Mr. Williams was rushed to hospital but died some hours later.

Meanwhile pensioner Lutchmin Bickram was attacked at her home on Singh Avenue Calcutta number two last Friday.

The 75 year old woman was beaten and robbed of her pension.

It is said Mrs. Bickram had just returned from cashing her pension cheque when she encountered an intruder in he bedroom.

The man is said, to have hit the grandmother of five, shook her violently and took her purse containing 37 hundred dollars before fleeing the scene.

The next day Mrs. Bickram died at the San Fernando general hospital.

The bandit reportedly entered through a metal door to the woman’s home.

Her daughter Radha Lall told the media the house had been gurgled several times but it was the first time Mrs. Bickram came face to face with the a criminal.

Relatives say the bandit had to have known the steel door in the kitchen was not sturdy before entering the house.

Meanwhile on Saturday two men were killed. One in Enterprise Chaguanas and the other in Caroni.

The victims are 40 year old Imran Khan and 22 year old Neyon Harvey.

Both men were killed within an hour of each other.

Mr. Khan was shot outside the river view bar at south bank Caroni road on Saturday night.

Mr. Harvey was found in a drain bleeding from gunshot wounds about his body.

He died at the scene.

THE EDUCATION MINISTRY SANCTIONS LOCS, PLAITS, AFROS AND HAIR EXTENSIONS…

Locs, plaits, afros and hair extensions get the nod from the Ministry of Education come September this year.

Yesterday the ministry said, it will allow students to wear their hair in styles now prohibited by schools.

The Ministry says, these hairstyles will be allowed in compliance with individual school hair rules.

The Ministry said, girls will also be allowed to wear hair extensions, weaves and braids.

Wigs and dyed or coloured hair will be prohibited except in special instances.

According to the Ministry, it has held talks with stakeholders on a draft code yesterday morning.

Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby Dolly last week promised to address the issue with stakeholders after some male students at Trinity College Moka, were blocked from fully participating in their graduation exercise because of their attire.

The incident triggered a raging debate and calls for a review of what exists at the level of schools.

There was division on whether the school’s administration was right to enforce the rules on Graduation day.
