Chairman of Peoples National Congress in Guyana charged with 2 counts of conspiracy to defraud

One day after being questioned by the police the Chairman of the Peoples National Congress in Guyana has been charged with 2 counts of conspiracy to defraud.

Mrs. Volda Lawrence appeared in court yesterday.

After the appearance Mrs. Lawrence said it is all political and she has done no wrong.

Mrs. Lawrence is accused of conspiring with the returning officer of Region 4, Claimont Maingot to declare a fraudulent account of votes in the elections.

She was granted bail in the sum of 50,000 dollars for each of the charges.

Her attorney Nigel Hughes says it is clear the police want to harass and embarrass the leaders of the opposition party.

The attorney told reporters yesterday the prosecutor was not ready to proceed with the case and the matter was put to December 9th.

CMO insists people do the right thing to limit virus spread

Yesterday Chief Medical Officer Dr. Roshan Parasram outlined the statistics regarding those warded and at home with the virus.

Addressing the COVID-19 media conference Dr. Parasram further noted that age and activities seem to play a significant role in whether persons are infected or not.

He again insisted that people do the right things to limit the spread of this virus.

27 new cases of COVID recorded

27 new cases of the COVID-19 virus are recorded locally.

The Ministry of Health says these 27 new patients will be processed for admission at the discretion of the County Medical Officers of Health.

a release yesterday said 15 persons have been discharged from public health facilities.

The Ministry said there have been 64 recovered community cases bringing the total recovered community cases to 3,452.

It said the total positive cases now stands at 5,154 while the number of active cases are 1,609.

The number of persons who have died of the virus is 93.

A drive by shooting in Morvant claims the lives of Jason Granderson and Gregory Robinson.

The incident occurred at Jacobin Street on Tuesday night.

Reports say an off duty police officer was also wounded during the incident.

Newscenter 5 understands at around 10:30 Tuesday night a group of people was standing along the roadway when a vehicle pulled up alongside them.

It is said one of the occupants opened fire hitting 3 men.

The off duty officer who is said to be attached to the Northeastern Division was wounded.

He was taken to hospital.

Police are said to be searching for suspects.

Police believe killing of Tenile Cupid was related to a domestic situation

Police believe the killing of 23-year-old Tenile Cupid was related to a domestic situation.

They have been searching for a man in whose company Ms. cupid was last seen.

Ms. Cupid’s body was found in Santa Flora, hours after she was reported missing on Tuesday.

Police say Water And Sewerage Authority workers who were visiting a site at St. Clyne Road Santa Flora at around 3.35 Tuesday afternoon discovered Ms. Cupid’s body.

It is reported her face was covered with a piece of cloth and there was a wound to the head.

Her mother, Nathalie Manzano told police her daughter left their home at Easy Street, Fyzabad on Monday night in a vehicle driven by a man with whom she had recently ended a relationship.

Up to yesterday police were searching for the man.

Southern Homicide Division officers visited the scene and are continuing investigations.

Earlier this week Sunil Dookie appeared in court for the murder of his ex wife Reshma Kanchan.

The mother of 2 was found chopped to death near her Penal home on September 29th.

Trinidad and Tobago nationals stuck in the UK raised in the House of Commons … Government responds

The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs here at home has responded to the plight of stranded nationals in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.

Yesterday in the British parliament, Foreign Office Minister Wendy Morton yesterday explained to the parliament that the Trinidad and Tobago government decided to close its borders in light of the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year.

She then advised affected Trinidad and Tobago nationals to make contact with their High Commission in London for assistance.

MP for the Wycombe constituency Steve Baker said he is aware that there are Trinidad and Tobago nationals burning through their savings and terrified that they will not be able to return home.

The MP called the action of the TT government uncommon humanity.

Last evening the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs issued a statement saying it is providing help to nationals overseas stranded because of because of the border closure.

The release said Trinidad and Tobago overseas missions have maintained contact with nationals who are affected.

According to the Ministry, the overseas missions have also provided humanitarian assistance to Trinidad and Tobago nationals stranded.

It said over $200,000 US dollars has been disbursed to 298 nationals who sought help in August and September.

Moonilal claims government spending millions on corruption investigations targeting members of former PP government

Dr. Roodal Moonilal is claiming the government has been spending millions of dollars to pay 6 Special Reserve Police officers.

He says the officers are part of ongoing corruption investigations targeting former members of the Peoples Partnership government.

In the parliament yesterday Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said he has no apologies to make for seeking the peoples business.

He said there was nothing wrong with him signing a document to allow British lawyers to be paid to pursue corruption here.

PM agrees to set ceiling on tax exemptions on purchases of high-end vehicles

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has agreed to set a ceiling on tax exemptions on the purchases of high-end vehicles for his Cabinet members and other MPs.

It has been a major issue after the Finance Minister last week announced increased taxes on the importation of vehicles.

The tax exemptions enjoyed by MPs, Ministers and other public officials were untouched.

Members of the public began calling for those exemptions to be reconsidered.

Yesterday Dr. Keith Rowley said he would take a proposal to the Cabinet.

During her start of the Budget debate last Friday, opposition leader Kamla Persad Bissessar suggested a cap on exemptions.

In the parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Rowley pointed fingers at the opposition.

Finance Minister Colm Imbert went further, calling out those on the opposition bench who may have abused the exemptions.

The chief whip among them.

Minority Assemblyman Farley Augustine adds his support to calls for elected and appointed officials to give up some of their perks in this time of COVID-19 measures.

On The Morning Show on i95.5fm yesterday he said Members of Parliament and the Tobago House of Assembly must show they understand the struggles of the people they represent, many of whom have lost their jobs and incomes.

He said the exemptions and tax concessions on vehicles for some officer holders should be put on hold.

Mr. Augustine is also questioning how some elected and appointed officials are able to pay for these high end vehicles 2 and 3 times in a term.

The Assemblyman revealed his salary to be $11,200 dollars per month.

Bar owners and restaurants call on government to ease restrictions

A call for government to ease the restrictions on bar owners and restaurants.

Interim President of the Bar Owners and Operators Association Theron Mohan says there is absolutely no reason for the authorities to continue the take away system.

He does not believe a lift on restrictions will result in an increase of COVID-19 cases.

Mr. Mohan is suggesting government re-introduce the same safety measures it did before the recent ban on in-house dinning and drinking

In May, bars were closed and in-house dining suspended as government worked to implement measures to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Today, Mr. Mohan said bar and restaurant owners are suffering.

Speaking with Newscenter 5 yesterday he also said many bar owners have been unable to access grants.

Mr. Mohan wants government to do something to address this.

He also said the association continues to engage all stakeholders and strive for excellence according to world health standards to ensure that COVID-19 remains under control.
