PRIME MINISTER DEFENDS POLICE…HE TELLS CRIMINALS DO NOT OPEN FIRE ON OFFICERS

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley responds to the number of fatal police shootings for the year, he warns people not to shoot at officers.

Dr. Rowley says, the number of fatal police shootings shows that criminals are prepared to engage law enforcement officers.

Over 20 people have been killed during reported shootouts with officers for the year so far.

Dr. Keith Rowley says, it seems as though the intention of the criminals is to shoot their way out of any situation with the police.

He says, the number can only decline when the criminal elements desist from engaging officers in gun battles.

Questioned by reporter on officers wearing the body cameras, Dr. Rowley said, not all of them are required to be given the device.

Dr. Rowley was speaking at the post cabinet news conference yesterday.

16 YEAR OLD ALIYAH SANTO SHOT DEAD IN WALLERFIELD…POLICE ARE PROBING THE CIRCUMSTANCES…

Conflicting reports on the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of, 16-year-old Aliyah Santo.

Aliyah Santo was fatally shot on Tuesday night.

Police say, they were summoned to the Arima health facility at around 11:40 pm after being told by officials there, that a young lady had been brought in suffering from a gunshot wound.

According to initial reports, Aliyah was in the company of two people at her neighbour’s Antigua Road Wallerfield house, when they heard the front door open.

She is reported to have gone to investigate and was met at the bedroom door by a man with a gun.

The man reportedly fired one shot, and then ran out of the house.

One of the two boys explained to the police, after they heard the explosion they found Aliyah on the ground.

One spent nine-millimeter shell was recovered at the scene.

Another report is suggesting that one of the boys in the house was playing with a gun when it went off, hitting Aliyah in the left side of her chest.

Aliyah was then taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead, soon after arrival.

A SINGLE COFFIN FOR FATHER & DAUGHTER ENRICO AND ANIKA GUERRA…

Father and daughter killed by a gunman at their Moruga business place, have been laid to rest in one coffin.

Yesterday, scores of people attended the funeral for Enrico Guerra and his five-year-old daughter Anika.

A transparent glass covered the top of the casket, as hundreds of mourners viewed their bodies.

During the service outside their home at, Poui Road, St Mary’s Village, Moruga.

Both father and daughter were killed during an incident at the family’s mini mart, on August 20th.

Mr. Guerra was shot multiple times and died inside the business place.

Anika was hit five times.

She died at the Princes Town district health facility.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said, the shooting of the five year old cannot be explained.

Dr. Rowley admitted the incident saddened him.

A third person survived the shooting.

At the funeral yesterday, Enrico Guerra’s mother and Anika’s grandmother, Hesper Ali-Darsoo, questioned why she had to watch her son arrive in a hearse.

She described the shooter as an evil-minded person and an animal.

Ms. Ali Darsoo insisted, her son and his family were not involved in any gangster situations.

Others paid tribute to Anika and her father during the service.

The bodies of Enrico and Anika Guerra were ­interred yesterday, at the Rochard Douglas Road ­public cemetery.

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO READY FOR MPOX SAYS HEALTH MINISTER…

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh says, there are no monkey pox cases in Trinidad and Tobago at this time.

However should there be a case the country has the vaccines, to treat with it.

For the second time in as many years the World Health Organization, has declared a global public health emergency in response to its spread.

While still mainly in Africa, many countries are seeing increasing cases.

Minister Deyalsingh says, the state is ready.

In a recorded message yesterday the minister said, he is concerned about the declaration.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak in parts of Africa, a public health emergency of international concern.

The highly contagious disease – formerly known as “monkey pox” – has killed at least 450 people, during an initial outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It has now spread across parts of central and east Africa, and scientists are concerned about how fast a new variant of the disease is spreading, and its high fatality rate.

Who chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond is very worrying.

SEEK HELP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE…FROM A LEADING PSYCHOLOGIST…

Another call for women in abusive situations to get help.

This advice comes from clinical psychologist and UWI lecturer Dr. Katija Khan.

Dr. Khan, who is also director on the board of directors for the coalition against domestic violence, gives this advice in light of the recent murder of Kiefer Wilson by her ex boyfriend.

According to reports, Ms. Wilson was ran over and killed by a car driven by an ex-boyfriend, after she was struck with a wheel spanner on Tuesday night.

She attempted to run away following the attack with the spanner, but the perpetrator pursued her in his car and slammed the vehicle into her.

She died at the scene.

Today, Dr. Khan is urging women in abusive situations to seek help, before it is too late.

She says, abusers may not always be easy to spot at first instance.

Dr. Khan says, there is need for a supportive society, rather than one that scrutinizes victims of abuse.

DENGUE CONTINUES TO CLIMB…

Dengue fever cases in Trinidad and Tobago are climbing.

There have been eight deaths this year.

Minister of health Terrence Deyalsingh has said, there is a 300 percent increases in cases worldwide.

At a news conference yesterday, the minister brought the nation up to date on the numbers.

Health officials are again pleading with members of the public, to get rid of breeding spaces.

Workers from the insect sector control division have visited over, ten thousand seven hundred homes.

Minister Deyalsingh said, his ministry is getting ready for increase cases.

The minister assured there is no shortage of manpower to deal with this, expected increase in the public health sector.

SOLDIER CHARGED IN THE DEATH OF TRUCK DRIVER, NEIL BALLAI IS GRANTED BAIL…

A soldier is granted bail when he appears before a master of the court charged in the death of truck driver, Neil Ballai.

The soldier’s name is Jalani Mapp.

He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road traffic accident, failing to render assistance after an accident and driving without a certificate of insurance.

Mr. Mapp was not called upon to enter a plea.

Mr. Ballai was 55 years old.

He died on March 28th when the kiss bakery van he was driving was rear-ended by a, black Hyundai Ioniq car near the Ato Boldon stadium on the Solomon Hochoy highway.

The driver of the Ioniq is said to have sped off

Mr. Ballai died at the scene of the accident.

Another passenger in the truck sustained injuries in the incident, and was hospitalized.

THREE BOYS REPORTED MISSING FROM MARVAL FACILITY RETURNED…

The boys from the Rainbow Rescue home in Maraval are back in safe care.

All three boys were reported missing from the home, just over one week ago.

Last evening, the children’s authority said the boys are safe.

Two of the three boys, 13 year old Aiden Chance and 14 year Old Zion Matthews, turned up at the office of the all people’s party on Monday morning.

The third boy, 15-year-old Navindra Mahabir is also with the authority.

They fled the home just over a week ago.

The authority’s director Sheldon Cyrus says, the safe return of the boys is yet another indication of the authority’s principle that, child protection is everybody’s business.

Mr. Cyrus says, as part of the authority’s process the children will receive the relevant medical and psychosocial interventions, to address any trauma they may have experienced.

The authority also says, it has started its investigations to determine how the boys, were able to leave Rainbow Rescue.

Yesterday, political leader of the APP, Kezel Jackson was critical of the children’s authority.

The two boys were in her care for a few hours after they were located.

She said she had tried to contact the authority since 1 p.m.

On Monday when the children showed up at her office ,and spent hours trying to reach officials.

49 VENEZUELAN NATIONALS HELD BY OFFICIALS FOR ILLEGAL ENTRY…

Forty-nine Venezuelans have been held for illegal entry into Trinidad and Tobago.

The group was held between eleven pm on Saturday and six a.m. yesterday, during an operation conducted by the immigration investigations unit, immigration division, IATF and CID task force.

The 49 Venezuelans comprised 41 females and eight males.

Police officers are said, to have conducted searches at multiple locations across the central division.

Police say, the Venezuelans are to be transferred to the immigration detention centre in Aripo for further processing.

21 YEAR OLD WOMAN & 17 YEAR OLD MALE AMONG THREE ALLEGED GANG MEMBERS SHOT DEAD BY POLICE…

One woman and a teenager are among three people shot and killed by police.

Police say, the three were members of the resistance gang.

They died after a reported shootout, with police during the early hours of yesterday.

The trio has been identified as Amir Bissoon alias “PA”, Jodi Barath alias “Gia and Joseph Ramjit.

Gia was 21 years old and the mother of one.

Amir “pa” Bissoon was 17 year old.

Reports say, they were shot along the Caroni Savannah road in the vicinity of the cremation site at around 4:40am.

Newscentre five understands the officers were on patrol, proceeding in an easterly direction when information was received about a white Nissan Almera.

The TTPS says, officers saw the vehicle heading east along the Caroni Savannah road at high speed.

The officers attempted to stop the car, but it collided with the marked police vehicle.

Police say, they were shot at and two officers responded.

The three suspects were hit.

In the driver’s seat of the white Nissan Almera was Mr. Bissoon a known member of the resistance gang.

Ms. Barath was seated in the front passenger seat.

In the left rear passenger seat was Mr. Ramjit, also affiliated with the resistance gang.

One black pistol was reportedly seen on the driver’s side, of the white Nissan Almera.

All three were conveyed to the Eric Williams medical sciences complex and were pronounced dead on arrival.
