One man is killed in what is being called a drive by shooting in Mt. Lambert, while another is gunned down while in the bedroom of his Champ Fleur home.

Reports say the drive by shooting occurred yesterday afternoon at around 4:10pm.

According to eyewitnesses the man identified as Marlon Moraldo was shot from a moving vehicle.

He was at the time standing on Mt. Lambert Circular Road between the Priority Bus Route and the Eastern Main Road when he was shot.

It is said 2 other people were shot and wounded.

The murder of Anthony Raymond is also being investigated.

He died at hospital hours after he was shot at his home in Champ Fleur.

Reports say Mr. Raymond was at his Esmeralda Drive, Mt. D’or Road, home at around 1:10am yesterday when a group of men broke down his front door and ran into his bedroom.

The assailants opened fire hitting Mr. Raymond several times in the chest, abdomen, elbow and knee before running away.

He was rushed to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where he underwent emergency surgery.

However, he died at around 10:40 yesterday morning.

For the first time in over 2 weeks there has been one more COVID-19 related death in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Ministry of Health says the death toll from the virus is now 140.

Up to yesterday’s report there were no new cases of the virus.

The count remains at 7,736.

95 of these cases are considered active.

Yesterday, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said the country would receive less than half of the initially approved number of doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine later this month.

Minister Deyalsingh told a news conference the country has secured 33,600 doses of the vaccine.

He also said such a method is good and a lot safer.

One man identified, as Keron Francois is dead while another is nursing chop wounds following an attack in Arima.

Mr. Francois was 28-years-old.

According to police reports, at around 5.45 pm yesterday officers in Arima received word of a killing along the Heights of Guanapo.

When they arrived just after 6pm, they found a man who was nursing wounds to one of his hands.

He informed the officers that a body was off the roadway in some bushes. 

The body of Mr. Francois was then discovered with a deep chop wound to the back of the head and back.

The District Medical Officer was notified and the body was viewed, declarations made, and a post mortem was ordered.

The wounded man was taken for medical treatment and is currently warded in a serious but stable condition at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.

The local representative for the United Nations also addresses the issue of domestic violence.

In her message on the observance of International Women’s Day today, UN Resident Coordinator, Marina Walter notes that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought out the best in women.

However she also notes there has been an increase in domestic violence.

In a videotaped address Ms. Walters said this is not desirable by the United Nations.

Commemoration of International Women’s Day ranges from being a public holiday in some countries to being largely ignored elsewhere.

In some places, it is a day of protest and in others; it is a day that celebrates womanhood.

President Paula Mae Weekes breaks her silence on the recent killings of young women, saying she was present and hurting along with the nation.

She says she was just not ready to speak.

The Head of State yesterday responded to criticisms of her silence.

To mark International Women’s Day today, President Weekes yesterday noted that based on the communications to her office and public comments, citizens wanted their Head of State to comfort them and bring the nation together.

President Weekes said she recognised that the people also wanted her to use moral suasion to make the government and the Opposition find common ground.

This country’s borders will remain closed until proper vaccination programs are rolled out both here and in other populations.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley at a media conference in Tobago yesterday.

Dr. Rowley said the re-opening of Trinidad and Tobago’s borders rests soley on successful vaccination programs.

Dr. Rowley said he does not want to re-open borders prematurely and suffer dire consequences.

The country’s borders were closed almost 1 year ago in an aim to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
