T&T records 18 additional COVID related deaths

The country records 18 additional COVID related deaths and more than 600 new cases.

This means the total number of persons who died from the virus stands at 408.

In its latest update yesterday, the Ministry of Health said dead are 7 elderly men, 5 elderly women, 4 middle aged men and 1 middle aged woman all with co-morbidities and 1 middle aged woman without co-morbidities

The ministry also confirmed 612 new cases bringing the total active caseload to 8,444.

According to the statistics 443 patients remain in hospital and 7,195 in home self-isolation.

Police Social and Welfare Association calls for all hands on deck in fight against COVID

The Police Social and Welfare Association issues a call for all hands on deck in the fight against COVID- 19.

President Inspector Gideon Dickson says now is not the time for division. 

At the weekly police media briefing on Tuesday, Inspector Dickson said the police service needs all the help it can get in the fight against what he described as an invisible enemy.

The inspector added there are programs in place to assist officers who may have tested positive for the virus.

He further noted that corporate Trinidad is ready to lend a hand.

The association head expressed gratitude for the efforts of all officers over the last 14 months in the fight against COVID and hoped for their assistance with crime fighting endeavors in the future.

No abusing curfew passes

Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith

The Police Commissioner tells the public look out for mischief-makers.

Gary Griffith says there are persons spreading false information on social networks about the lockdown protocols.

 The top cop also warns against those taking advantage of curfew passes.

Commissioner Griffith further notes that persons are attempting to duplicate curfew passes.

He also advises that off duty members of the Defence Force and other protective services will require passes if caught outside after lockdown hours.

He was speaking at the police media briefing yesterday.

Tobago records one new COVID death and over 40 cases

A 75-year-old woman is Tobago’s latest COVID-19 fatality.

The death toll associated with the virus there now stands at seven.

The sister isle also recorded 42 new cases of the virus.

In a release, the Division of Health, Wellness and Family Development says there are now 132 active cases of the virus in Tobago.

430 people have tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic last year.

The division is reminding members of the public to practice all preventative and safety measures, which include getting vaccinated, practicing social distancing, washing hands and wearing masks.

The country recorded 15 new deaths and 250 cases yesterday.

Members of business community angry and frustrated

Members of the business community are said to be angry and frustrated by the measures that have been restricting activity.

President of the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association Gregory Aboud says while the country is under lockdown his members still have their financial obligations.

He says many are having a hard time.

Mr. Aboud acknowledged the governments efforts to acquire vaccines and said there is a role for the private sector if need be.

However he believes it is restrictive to present citizens from seeking vaccination elsewhere.

The organisation meets with Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley tomorrow.

He says his members are looking at regional countries and wondering why similar measures are not being adopted here to allow for the economy to open back up.

TTPS says…We are not afraid of COVID-19

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service says COVID-19 will not deter them in the execution of their duties.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations sent a warning to those who believe officers may be deterred from carrying out their duties because of the virus.

DCP Erla Christopher says this is not the case.

She says officers will not waver because of the virus.

DCP Christopher was speaking during the weekly TTPS media briefing this morning.

DCP Christopher says this is evident in the number of operations conducted by officers.

She gave a breakdown of the number of tickets issued and arrests made since the commencement of the SOE on May 16th.

DCP Christopher also told of officers who have recently contracted the virus.

She said the figure is in the hundreds.

Also at the media conference was Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith who assured that his officers are out in their numbers and will be enforcing all COVID-19 regulations.

The top cop said he is hopeful cases can be decreased.

He again called on members of the public to be responsible and remain vigilant.

A Presidential tongue lashing

A tongue lashing for members of the public from President of the Republic, Paula Mae Weekes.

The President yesterday scolded citizens who failed to adhere to COVID-19 regulations.

President Weekes made the comment during a video included in a broadcast of a prayer service held to commemorate the National Day of Prayer yesterday.

She called on members of the public to be their brother’s keepers.

The President said this is needed in the fight against COVID-19.

Earlier, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Port of Spain, Jason Gordon who led the prayer said the National Day of Prayer is necessary as Trinidad and Tobago is currently experiencing a crisis.

He called on citizens to ask god for forgiveness.

Vaccine mix up at Health Centre, one doctor says there is no need for hysteria

Former Health Minister Dr. Fuad Khan says there is no need to fear an extra dose of the COVID-19 jab.

He was responding to the vaccine mix up at a Health Centre in Barataria.

Reports say an elderly couple with appointments for the second dose of AstraZeneca in June, were called to come in on the weekend instead.

However when they arrived they realized the vaccine being distributed was Sinopharm.

Officials were notified and operations at the facility were halted temporarily.

Today Dr. Khan tells Newcenter 5 an extra shot will only improve the immune system.

According to Dr. Khan, members of the public need a health card to keep records of all their medical appointments.

He says this will prevent situations like this.

A relative of the elderly couple posted a voice note detailing the incident on social media.

Woman is stabbed to death in west Trinidad

There are reports of an overnight murder in Petit Valley.

The victim, a woman, is yet to be identified.

The incident is said to have occurred last night.

Reports say at around 7:45pm the woman and a close male relative had an argument at her Simeon Road home.

It is said the quarrel escalated into a fight and the woman was stabbed several times.

She was rushed to hospital where she died a short while later.

Investigations are continuing.

Point Fortin man dies under mysterious circumstances

A man dies at his Point Fortin home under mysterious circumstances following an attack on family members.

He has been identified as Kaeron Dublin.

He was 57-year-old and lived at Tanner Street.

Reports say officers were called to the scene following a report by the victim’s sister who said that she and her mother were at home with Kaeron, when he began behaving violently.

The woman told police Mr. Dublin threatened to kill them both.

She said he began choking her and she pushed him, he fell and a violent struggle ensued.

The reports said both she and her mother attempted to subdue him and she placed her left knee on Kaeron’s chest close to his neck, while her mother called Mr. Wayne Joefield to assist.   

On arrival, Mr. Joefield checked and found Kaeron unresponsive and called the EHS.

Crime scene personnel processed the scene and retrieved items of evidential value.
