Body found wrapped in tarpaulin in Penal is believed to be missing 43-year-old Tunapuna woman

The body found wrapped in a tarpaulin in Penal is believed to be that of 43-year-old Kareen Ramlal of Orange Grove Trace, Pasea, Tunapuna

A hammer was found near the body at Bobb Trace, Penal yesterday.

The woman’s identification card, her shoes and clothing were also found.

The body was found during a search by police officers and members of the Hunters’ Search and Rescue team.

The search for Ms. Ramlal began yesterday morning at 7am.

Ms. Ramlal was reported missing by relatives.

An autopsy is to be done on the body to determine the cause of Ms. Ramlal’s death.

MSJ leader defends name following attack from the Public Utilities Minister

Political leader of the Movement for Social Justice David Abdullah responds to the slamming he got from the Public Utilities Minister.

Last weekend Minister Marvin Gonsalez criticised Mr. Abdullah’s statements on the plans to restructure the Water And Sewerage Authority.

Minister Gonsalez said Mr. Abdullah has no moral authority to speak on what is to take place at WASA.

The Minister said Mr. Abdullah was in the Peoples Partnership government when the deal was made with DESALCOTT.

Yesterday Mr. Abdullah sought to set the record and the Minister straight.

Nevertheless Mr. Abdullah said Minister Gonsalez is yet to answer the questions posed about plans to send home WASA managers, and the hiring of others.

And there is a claim that the government has already started training people to fill management positions at the Water And Sewerage Authority.

The Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonsalez has confirmed that managers at the company are to be sent home.

Yesterday Oropouche east MP Dr. Roodal Moonilal questioned the government’s motives and its transformation plans for WASA.

The Opposition MP is also talking about government’s engagement of a foreign firm.

The Public Utilities Minister has promised that nothing is being done at WASA without consultations and negotiations.

Minister of Sports and Community Development Shamfa Cudjoe, extends congratulations to the national relay teams at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

She says their efforts exemplified tenacity and determination to succeed.

A release from the Minister says the overall performances of Team TTO have truly inspired all.

Minister Cudjoe reaffirms that the government of Trinidad and Tobago remains committed to supporting its athletes.

The Sport Minister also pays tribute to the athletes, coaches, and management for their hard work.

Prime Minister thanks national athletes for fulfilling day after Commonwealth medal take

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley sends congratulations to the 4x400M relay team and others who brought medals to this country at the Commonwealth Games.

In a release last evening Dr. Rowley said he was up in time yesterday to follow all the action as the country enjoyed a most fulfilling day, thanks to the 4X4 relay team.

According to the Prime Minister the teams gave of their all and represented Trinidad and Tobago magnificently.

 
He said yesterday’s activities and the cyclists’ performances, coming back to back, should dispel some of the negative vibes that flow through so many people who do not believe that citizens can make it or are indeed making it.

Athlete Jereem Richards yesterday made a specific request on Saturday.

The next day Jereem got his wish.

Mr. Richards was all smiles as he sang the words of the anthem.

Jereem Richards defended the title he won 4 years ago.

Earlier following his victory Jereem thanked all those who made his dream possible including the late Deon Lendore.

In his message yesterday Dr. Rowley said there is much for this country to celebrate although some have gone as far as to question whether there is anything to celebrate on the 60th anniversary, this year.

He said unfortunately some people only know fear and even in the brightest sunlight can only see the darkness of the night.

Dr. Rowley said for those who believe in its citizens and in themselves this is truly a happy anniversary.

St. Kitts & Nevis vote for new government 3 years ahead of constitutional date

Long lines are seen as the people of St. Kitts and Nevis vote for a new government, 3 years ahead of the constitutional date.

An estimated 50, 933 people are registered to cast ballots.

Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris was forced to call an early election following the collapse of his coalition Team Unity administration, which had won a 2nd consecutive term in office in June 2020.

Supervisor of Elections, Elvin Bailey, says 34 candidates representing 6 political parties and 1 independent are contesting the polls, which opened at 7:00am.

The voting stations will close 11 hours later.

Superintendent Cromwell Henry said this morning police are all over the country ensuring order.

Dr. Harris’ People’s Labour Party is 1 of the 6 parties in the race.

The others are his former coalition partners, The People’s Action Movement and The Nevis-Based Concerned Citizens Movement.

The main Opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, The Nevis Reformation Party and The Moral Restoration Movement are all contesting the 11 seats in the 15-member Parliament.

Persons nominated by the Governor General following the polls will fill the other 4 seats in the Legislative Chamber.

Government to spend $7.5 million on Independence Day celebrations this year

The government is to spend $7.5 million dollars on this year’s Independence celebrations.

A series of events is being planned.

The Independence Parade will return after a 2-year absence.

The head of a working committee set up to plan celebrations for the country’s 60th Anniversary of Independence is Housing and Urban Development Minister Camille Robinson Regis.

She told members of the media yesterday a fire works display is also being planned.

Both features have been absent in the past 2 years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minister revealed plans for other events to commemorate the anniversary on August 31st.

According to Minister Robinson Regis these plans keep in mind the deadly virus.

She said even though these are festive events people must remember to protect themselves from COVID.

No WASA shutdown says PSA president

An assurance from the representing Public Services Association, that there are no plans by workers at the Water And Sewerage Authority to engage in a shut down of operations today.

PSA President Leroy Baptiste says the government is behind rumors of a planned shut down.

Several posts shared on social media told of a shutdown plan, which is likely to affect many areas across, the country.

Speaking with Newscenter 5 this morning Mr. Baptiste said these rumors have no merit.

Mr. Baptiste said what government is doing is akin to criminal behavior.

WASA has also sought to dispel the rumors, saying people should pay no attention to them.

In a release the authority yesterday encouraged customers and the public to rely only on official communication.

Government has started its transformation of the company.

The transformation includes staff cuts.

Over 500 people affected by overnight flooding in Caroni

Over 500 people are today affected by flooding in the Caroni district after the river burst its banks overnight.

Several homes were flooded out in Caroni Village mainly in the Bridge and Persad Streets areas.

Councilor Samuel Sankar says officials from the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation and the Ministry of Works and Transport are on the ground assessing the damage.

He says clean up crews have also been deployed.

Mr. Sankar says works are to be conducted on the riverbanks to prevent a repeat of what he calls a disaster in the area.

And Chairman of the Regional Corporation Kwasi Robinson says the situation in Caroni remains a top priority.

However, he says there are reports of landslides along the North Coast Road and Aripo, which are also being addressed.

He assures his corporation is on top of the situation.

Copper thieves strike again

Copper thieves strike again, this time shutting down Internet service in parts of Mayaro.

Residents say they have been coping with unsteady and unreliable service over the past weeks.

According to the residents last week they experienced 3 days of disturbance in all TSTT related services.

A release from the Member of Parliament for Mayaro Rushton Paray yesterday called on TSTT to do what is necessary to fix the problems.

TSTT has confirmed recent disruptions in other parts of the country.

Another police shooting

Another fatal police shooting has occurred.

A Barbadian is the fatality.

Police shot Kyle King yesterday morning, near the St. Barbs Police Post in Laventille.

Police say officers on mobile patrol, when they tried to stop Mr. King along Laventille Road, St Barbs, Mr. king reportedly failed to stop and fired shots at the officers from within his vehicle.

The officers returned fire hitting 34-year-old Mr. King.

He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Relatives have disputed the claims of the police.

One of them called for CCTV footage to be made available to the public.
