Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley sends congratulations to the 4x400M relay team and others who brought medals to this country at the Commonwealth Games.

In a release last evening Dr. Rowley said he was up in time yesterday to follow all the action as the country enjoyed a most fulfilling day, thanks to the 4X4 relay team.

According to the Prime Minister the teams gave of their all and represented Trinidad and Tobago magnificently.

 
He said yesterday’s activities and the cyclists’ performances, coming back to back, should dispel some of the negative vibes that flow through so many people who do not believe that citizens can make it or are indeed making it.

Athlete Jereem Richards yesterday made a specific request on Saturday.

The next day Jereem got his wish.

Mr. Richards was all smiles as he sang the words of the anthem.

Jereem Richards defended the title he won 4 years ago.

Earlier following his victory Jereem thanked all those who made his dream possible including the late Deon Lendore.

In his message yesterday Dr. Rowley said there is much for this country to celebrate although some have gone as far as to question whether there is anything to celebrate on the 60^th anniversary, this year.

He said unfortunately some people only know fear and even in the brightest sunlight can only see the darkness of the night.

Dr. Rowley said for those who believe in its citizens and in themselves this is truly a happy anniversary.

Over 500 people are today affected by flooding in the Caroni district after the river burst its banks overnight.

Several homes were flooded out in Caroni Village mainly in the Bridge and Persad Streets areas.

Councilor Samuel Sankar says officials from the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation and the Ministry of Works and Transport are on the ground assessing the damage.

He says clean up crews have also been deployed.

Mr. Sankar says works are to be conducted on the riverbanks to prevent a repeat of what he calls a disaster in the area.

And Chairman of the Regional Corporation Kwasi Robinson says the situation in Caroni remains a top priority.

However, he says there are reports of landslides along the North Coast Road and Aripo, which are also being addressed.

He assures his corporation is on top of the situation. 

Copper thieves strike again, this time shutting down Internet service in parts of Mayaro.

Residents say they have been coping with unsteady and unreliable service over the past weeks.

According to the residents last week they experienced 3 days of disturbance in all TSTT related services.

A release from the Member of Parliament for Mayaro Rushton Paray yesterday called on TSTT to do what is necessary to fix the problems.

TSTT has confirmed recent disruptions in other parts of the country.

Another fatal police shooting has occurred.

A Barbadian is the fatality.

Police shot Kyle King yesterday morning, near the St. Barbs Police Post in Laventille.

Police say officers on mobile patrol, when they tried to stop Mr. King along Laventille Road, St Barbs, Mr. king reportedly failed to stop and fired shots at the officers from within his vehicle.

The officers returned fire hitting 34-year-old Mr. King.

He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Relatives have disputed the claims of the police.

One of them called for CCTV footage to be made available to the public.

Two men are shot and killed in separate situations, one in St. Augustine and the other in Belmont.

In the latest Ricardo Simon is the victim.

Reports say the incident took place along Hermitage Road in Gonzales around 10:30pm last night.

Newscenter 5 understands Mr. Simon was driving his vehicle when several explosions were heard.

It was followed by a crashing noise.

Upon checking, residents found Mr. Simon inside the vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds.

It is said he was shot and veered of the road way.

The vehicle collided with another car, which was heading in the opposite direction.

Police were called to the scene.

Mr. Simon was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

And a man was shot and killed near the campus of the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine.

He has been identified as Sherwin Julien.

Reports say the incident took place near Gateboys Bar at around 6pm last evening.

Newscenter 5 understands Mr. Julien was working inside the bar doing construction work when 2 men entered and began firing shots at him.

The armed men got back into a waiting vehicle and sped off.

Checks later revealed Mr. Julien bleeding from gunshot wounds.

 He was taken to hospital where Mr. Julien was pronounced dead.

Investigations are continuing.
