Tobago politician takes issue with name of new vessel APT James

One opposition politician in Tobago takes issue with the name of the recently arrived vessel to service the sea bridge.

Last Friday the APT James arrived in the country, too much fanfare.

The vessel made a sail past in the Scarborough Port before heading to Port of Spain.

However this is not sitting well with former Minority Councillor and PDP candidate for Belle Garden Goodwood, Dr Faith. B. Yisrael.

At the Progressive Democratic’s campaign launch last Sunday, Dr. Yisrael urged Tobagonians not to forget the hardships endured back in 2017 when the sea bridge collapsed.

According to the Deputy Political Leader the Progressive Democratic Patriots is bent on completing the work started by APT James.

The PDP candidate believes the PNM is not being genuine with its handling of this matter.

Venezuela’s opposition-held Congress extends term after disputed vote

President Nicolas Maduro

Venezuela’s Opposition-held National Assembly approves a statute extending its term into 2021.

It follows a disputed December 6th election in which allies of President Nicolas Maduro’s ruling Socialist Party won 91% of the seats in Congress.

The South American country’s 4 main Opposition parties boycotted the Parliamentary vote, arguing conditions for a free and fair election were not met.

Most western democracies, including the United States, have said they do not recognize the election results.

The vote paves the way for Opposition Leader, Juan Guaido, to retain his role as the Parliament’s Speaker.

Mr. Guaido’s nearly 2-year push to oust President Maduro, whom he labels a dictator, has been unsuccessful.

The statute provides for a small group of Legislators to carry out the National Assembly’s functions.

The change comes as dozens of Legislators have fled the country, or have expressed unwillingness to continue serving in Congress next year, due to what they describe as threats from the government.

Mr. Maduro, who calls Guaido a US-puppet seeking to oust him in a coup, has said the election was transparent and points out that several opposition candidates participated.

Mr. Guaido says those candidates are shadow allies of the government.

The socialist-controlled Congress is scheduled to be sworn in on January 5th, 2021.

Custom built fast ferries due to arrive 1st week in January 2021

The Atlantic Ocean is now all that separates the APT James from home.

The first of 2 custom built fast ferries to service the inter-island sea bridge arrived in the Canary Islands at 8pm on December 25th

According to original plans, the vessel was due to make its final bunkering stop in the Cape Verde Islands.

However in a release, the National Infrastructure Development Company explains the switch from the Cape Verde Islands to the Canary Islands was as a result of the unavailability of bunkering services during the holiday period in the Cape Verde Islands.

Early in December the APT James was forced to make a lengthy and unplanned stop in Malta due to inclement weather in the Mediterranean Sea.

This delay affected the schedule for the rest of its journey, which created the clash for bunkering in the Cape Verde Islands.

NIDCO says the stop in the Canary Islands is the final stop in the vessel’s journey to Trinidad and Tobago.

There are now 2,900 nautical miles left in its journey to this country.

It is now due to arrive in Port of Spain in the first week of January 2021 good weather permitting.
