Israeli Military attack Gaza

The Israeli Military directs heavy artillery fire and dozens of airstrikes into Gaza.

The attacks occurred last night and into this morning.

There are growing fears that a ground invasion of the territory could be launched to quell rocket fire from Palestinian militants.

As the Israeli bombardment rained down, United Nations officials inside Gaza said dozens of people had fled their homes in the north and east of the Enclave to seek refuge in schools.

Protesting public sector workers in Belize call Prime Minister Brecino…a coward

Protesting teachers and other public workers in Belize call the Prime Minister a coward, after he place on Facebook his government’s offer.

Yesterday President of the Belize National Teachers Union, Elena Smith challenged Prime Minister Brecino to face workers and stop hiding before social media.

President of the Public Service Union, Gerald Henry said the strike would continue.

Mr. Henry said public sector workers are in control and can collapse any government.

The union leader said nothing could happen in the country if the public sectors workers refuse to perform their duties.

2nd storey of house destroyed by fire in Cocorite

The second storey of a house in west Trinidad is completely destroyed by fire.  

According to reports the home located at LP #24 Nile Street, Cocorite and was owned by Cheryl Marshall.

The building went up in flames at around 10am yesterday.  

Sixty-three-year-old Ms. Marshall told the fire service she was in the living room watching television when she heard a loud noise. 

A short time later the living room was engulfed in flames and smoke.

Ms. Marshall received minor burns to her left arm but had the presence of mind to grab her 5-year-old grandson and run from the blazing house.   

Her sister, 60-year-old Ann-Marie Joseph who resides downstairs, escaped unharmed.  

The entire upstairs area and its contents were destroyed.

Damage has been estimated at approximately $300,000.

Investigations are now underway into what caused the blaze.

45,000 Tobagonians have so far qualified for COVID vaccine

Forty-five thousand people in Tobago have so far qualified for the COVID-19 vaccine.

General Manager of Primary Care Services at the Tobago Regional Health Authority, Dr. Roxanne Mitchell gave the figures this morning.

Also speaking at the weekly COVID briefing in Tobago a short while ago was Head of the Secretary for Health Tracey Davison Celestine.

She said there are more facilities for COVID positive and recovering patients.

She also noted that there are 2 streams of testing which can be conducted on the island.

DOMA President has message for naysayers

DOMA President, Gregory Aboud

The Downtown Owners and Merchants Association is telling naysayers to stop the blame game, criticisms and attacks in the face of rising COVID deaths and cases.

DOMA President Gregory Aboud says the nation is at war with a deadly virus, bodies are falling and lives are being adversely affected.

According to Mr. Aboud, this is a time to band together and not get distracted.

Mr. Aboud says the various commentators and protagonists do not appear to be what he calls big picture thinkers.

He believes they may be so influenced by partisan interests that they fail to appreciate the more serious situation facing the country.

Speaking with Newscenter 5 this morning he said, people must put their individual feelings aside.

Mr. Aboud also applauded the Bhagwansingh group for its voluntary closure until May 23rd.

He is urging the rest of the business community to initiate any action that can reduce activity and assist in controlling this current COVID wave.

Postpone SEA…a call from the President of TTUTA

There is a call for this year’s Secondary Entrance Assessment to be postponed.

The appeal comes from the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association.

Its head, Antonia De Freitas says given the ongoing increases in COVID-19 cases and deaths, the exam, which is carded for June 10th, should be postponed.

Ms. De Freitas believes the date is too soon.

She says the date is worrying, as teachers have not yet been vaccinated.

Ms. De Freitas says dialogue with the Education Ministry on the matter is crucial.

The TTUTA head was speaking with Newscentre 5 earlier.

Reports of COVID-19 infections at a supermarket in the east

There are reports that several workers at the Extra Foods in Grand Bazaar are COVID-19 positive and are still being told to turn up for duty.

Newscenter 5 understands managers are among those infected.

When contacted this morning, a manager, identified as Andrew Austin promised to officially respond.

Up to news time there was no reply.

Mr. Austin did not confirm nor deny the reports.

However he said the supermarket has taken several measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus among staff members and customers.

He did complain that customers were not complying with the measures in place.

And Head of the Supermarkets Association Rajiv Diptee says his members are proactive when it comes to minimising staff contact. 

Speaking with Newscentre 5 this morning Mr. Diptee explained it not always easy but systems are in place to deal with infections at workplaces.

Mr. Diptee said supermarkets are essential but workers are not being treated as such.

The association added that it remains heartbroken that it was not allowed to bring in vaccinations for its members and workers.

Argument in Valencia turns deadly

A 20-year-old man is stabbed to death in Valencia.

The deceased has been identified as Christopher Olivierre also known as Jojo.

Mr. Oliverre was killed during an altercation with another man.

Reports say at around 6:35 last evening, Mr. Oliverre was walking along Paradise Lane when he got into an altercation with a 19-year-old man.

The suspect is said to have pulled out a knife and dealt Mr. Oliverre several stab wounds to his chest.

Another man, Jason Oliverre was also stabbed during the incident.

They were both taken to hospital where Christopher Oliverre died.

The suspect fled the scene but later surrendered to police at the Valencia Police Station.

Enquiries are continuing.

Cyber attack on US oil pipeline causes panic buying

A cyber attack on a vital US oil pipeline is starting to have an impact on the public.

The critical colonial pipeline was shut down after a ransomware attack last Friday and is not expected to substantially restore service for a few more days.

Gas stations across the US east coast are turning away customers as their reservoirs empty amid panic buying.

Airline groups are worried it could have an impact on flights.

So far, 2 flights have had to be rescheduled to add fuelling stops.

Grenada continues to welcome international flights and visitors.

And Health Minister Nickolas Steele says this creates greater risks.

There are more than 10,000 vaccine doses still available.

Minister Steele said yesterday it is important for the doses to be used by the expiry date.

He wants people to take the shots by May 14th.
