Teenage boy among 22 new COVID related deaths

A teenager is among the latest number of persons to die from COVID-19.

The latest update from the Ministry of Health says there were 22 more deaths today, and 666 new infections.

There are now a total of 2,303 deaths to date.

The country’s active caseload now stands at 12,902.

The Ministry says the deceased were 6 elderly males, 6 elderly females, 4 middle-aged males, 5 middle-aged females and 1 teenage male.

It says 11 of the deceased, including the teenager, had multiple comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, asthma, cancer, heart disease, thyroid disease, or downs syndrome.

Another 4 persons had 1 comorbidity, while 7 persons had no known comorbidities.

Government accused of interference in reappointment of UWI Chancellor, the Ministry of Education responds

The Opposition, United National Congress believes there is mischief afoot in the reappointment of the Chancellor of the University of the West Indies. 

The accusations were leveled during question and answer session in the Senate yesterday.

Government Senator Allison West was responding for her colleague, Education Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, to questions from Senator Wade Mark.

Senator West explained why Vice Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles was not appointed to the post of University Principal.

Professor Brian Copeland was given 1 more year on his contract even as he is of retirement age.

Senator West said his stewardship over the years proved positive hence the reappointment.

However Senator Mark was not convinced.

He accused government of interference.

Further Mr. Mark contended that someone deliberately stopped the interviews.

Senator West further explained that this reappointment was not unusual.

In addition she denounced claims of a plot against the Vice Chancellor.

The decision to extend the tenure of Professor Brian Copeland was made at the annual meeting of the University Council on April 30th, which was chaired by Chancellor Robert Bermudez, and held virtually for the second consecutive year.

A call for Minister Hinds to resign

A call from the Opposition, United National Congress for the resignation of National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds.

The party says he has failed to protect the nations prison officers.

In recent weeks, 2 officers were killed and there is word of 11 more to be murdered before Christmas.

At the party’s weekly media conference yesterday Naparima MP Rodney Charles said the Minister must go.

The opposition member said the National Security Minister has failed.

Newscenter 5 reached out to Minister Hinds for a comment but got no response.

26 COVID related deaths and 601 new infections

There have been 26 additional COVID related deaths taking the country’s tally to 2,262.

The Ministry of Health says the deceased are 11 elderly men, 6 elderly women, 3 middle-aged men and 6 middle-aged women.

It says 601 new infections were also recorded.

The Ministry says the new cases are from samples taken during the period December 2nd to the 4th.

The active caseload in the country now stands at 12, 230.

And a tongue lashing from Roman Catholic Archbishop Jason Gordon who says it is the indiscipline of citizens that has brought on this current wave of COVID-19 infections.

This as he calls on the nation to “grow up”.

In recent days new cases and deaths in Trinidad have been escalating.

Yesterday Tobago reported 1 new death and 30 new cases.

An angry archbishop yesterday called on citizens to do better.

Delivering the homily at the Living Water Mass this morning the cleric likened the behaviour to that of a spoilt child.

The mass was broadcasted live on i95.5fm.

TTPS warns voters anyone found breaching the Public Health Regulations will be prosecuted

The TTPS is reminding voters the election is being held against the background of the existing COVID-19 pandemic with surging numbers of new infections and deaths.

It says it is also being held under existing public health regulations based on the COVID-19 pandemic.

The TTPS says police officers will play an active role in preserving law and order at the various polling stations throughout Tobago by enforcing the laws especially the existing public health regulations regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is asking voters to act responsibly and wear masks, wash hands and practice social distancing in the lines leading to, and within, the various polling stations.

The TTPS say it is also aware than many persons have been issued with quarantine orders by officials of the Ministry of Health to self-quarantine during the elections and may wish to disregard these directives and visit polling stations in order to cast their votes.

It is advising those in to refrain from visiting any polling station to cast their vote.

The TTPS says anyone found breaching the public health regulations would be prosecuted.

The TTPS ensures a safe and secure environment for today’s voting process.

EBC cancels plans for pilot project for Parallel Data Collection

The Elections and Boundaries Commission cancels plans for a pilot project for Parallel Data Collection at polling stations.

A release from the EBC says this follows a meeting on Saturday with representatives of the media and political parties contesting todays Tobago House of Assembly elections.

The pilot project was to be trialed in the specified electoral districts of Scarborough/Mt. Grace And Mt. St. George/Goodwood today.

The commission says it listened to all relevant parties and decided to defer for future elections after there is an opportunity for further consultation.

It says the Progressive Democratic Patriots declined the invitation to attend the demonstration and maintained their objection to this initiative.

The EBC says in light of this objection and as it remains a committed partner to the democratic process, the commission decided to defer the introduction of this initiative.

It says as the EBC prepares for the upcoming local government elections in 2022, it will take the opportunity to meet with all stakeholders to discuss the advantages of this initiative.

Tobagonians are at this time casting their ballots for a new THA executive

It’s Election Day in Tobago. 

After weeks of campaigning, Tobagonians will finally vote today for a new executive.

The polls opened at 6 o’clock this morning and close at 6pm.  

There are 45 candidates representing 5 political parties in today’s election. 

Fifty one thousand three hundred and eighty three are eligible to vote across 67 polling divisions. 

Today’s poll comes more than 10 months after the January 25th election, which saw a 6/6 tie between the Peoples National Movement and the Progressive Democratic Patriots.

Both the Peoples National Movement and the Progressive Democratic Patriots are fielding a full slate of 15 candidates, while the Innovative Democratic Alliance will be fielding only 13 candidates. 

The Class Action Reform Movement and the Unity Of the People will field 1 candidate each in the Buccoo/ Mt. Pleasant electoral district, which is the only district to attract candidates from all 5 political parties.

Gary Griffith comes out swinging at National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds saying he is using old methods that cannot benefit the police service.

In a voice note yesterday a passionate Mr. Griffith says as the nation grapples with the spiraling crime rate the Minister engages in a public relations stunt on the matter.

Mr. Griffith says this is even compounded seeing recent murders involving illegal firearms.

He also defends his hiring of 19 contract workers under his tenure as Police Commissioner.

He says Minister Hinds continues to show he is unfit for the job with his retroactive approach to the office.

Mr. Griffith says such persons are not progressive and will only serve to take the police service backwards.

Country records its 2nd highest day of COVID-19 deaths with 24 reported

The country records its second highest day of COVID-19 deaths with 24 reported.

The Ministry of Health also says that 763 new positive cases were recorded.

In an update it says dead are 8 elderly males, 8 elderly females, 4 middle aged males and 4 middle aged females.

The Ministry says this brings to 2,158 the total number of fatalities to date.

It says 14 persons had multiple comorbidities including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, asthma, cancer and arthritis.

A release says 6 persons had one comorbidity hypertension or diabetes and 4 persons had no known comorbidity.

It says 90.9 % of persons in the Parallel Health Care System are not vaccinated.

Stuart Young tells UN forum his government wants to create digital economy

Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Stuart Young tells a United Nations forum his government wants to create a digital economy in which electronic transactions are the norm in doing business.

Minister Young, addressing the United Nations “Big Data” Forum yesterday, said a Technical Digital Skills Training Program is on government’s agenda among other plans.  

He said government plans to increase access to free broadband across the country.

Minister Young said dealing with COVID-19 in the past 2 years has brought to government’s attention existing gaps to Internet access for the society’s less fortunate.

He further told the UN forum that regionally, a task force has been established by the Caribbean community to provide an opportunity for the region to deliver a more collaborative, coordinated and innovative approach to meeting the digital skills challenge.
