Low Christmas sales reported in Port of Spain

A slower than usual Christmas week of sales for businesses in the capital city, Port of Spain.

President of the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association Gregory Aboud says while this is the case, it is not a surprise considering the pandemic.

Mr. Aboud says while shoppers are purchasing less items this year, business owners are grateful for the little support.

He says the current state of affairs is not unique to Trinidad and Tobago.

He says while he is not pointing fingers at anyone, there is need for a change in the current management model for towns and cities.

Mr. Aboud says not much improvement in sales is expected as traditionally last minute shoppers visit the city on the weekend before Christmas.

Trade unions trade unions tells the government think again

JTUM’s President, Ancel Roget

The Joint Trade Union Movement gets ready to rumble, as its members reject government’s planned mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley last Saturday announced that by mid January 2022, State employees should be vaccinated if they want to continue receiving their salaries.

Dr. Rowley insisted it is not a mandatory vaccination policy, but part of the safe zones initiative which exist in the private sector.

JTUM’s President, Ancel Roget calls the plan madness.

Mr. Roget said leaders of his umbrella body would gather outside the office of the Prime Minister tomorrow.

Prisons, fire and police services associations have voiced their concerns about the planned move.

They say the government is seeking to interfere with the salaries and terms and conditions of State employees.

Yesterday, Vice President of the Registered Nurses Association, Lettitia Cox said her colleagues are ready to consider walking away from their jobs.

They feel the plan by the government is forcing vaccination on them.

At yesterday’s COVID media update, Minister Deyalsingh also made it clear government has not instituted any mandatory vaccination policy.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh insisted there is support for the proposal.

Police, prison and fire associations against government’s plans for all public workers to be vaccinated

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley

The police, prison and fire services are slamming the plan by the government to insist it all its employees get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Keith Rowley last weekend said it is a matter of life and death hence his government’s decision, which is to be implemented in January.

In a joint statement yesterday the protective services said they are not in support of what they see as constructive mandatory vaccination.

They said the varying of terms and conditions of employment without consultations is illegal.

According to the statement the imposition of a quasi-safe zone work environment is discriminatory.

The joint protective services met yesterday and agreed that the Prime Minister’s statement threatens to violate the constitutional rights of every citizen and it must be rejected.
