T&T Coast Guard recover 3 of the 4 missing crew members of MV Fair Chance

The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard has recovered the bodies of 3 of the 4 missing crewmembers of the St. Vincentian vessel, MV Fair Chance.

The remains of Owen Prescott, Eric Calliste and Devon Celestine were found yesterday 16 days after the vessel overturned 5 nautical miles in the Gulf of Paria off Monos Island.

However, a statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard says a 4th person remains unaccounted for.

The release says the recovery team, involving coast guard and commercial professionals, managed to get the vessel afloat last Sunday morning, after other efforts to recover the bodies failed.

The coast guard says cargo and other debris had blocked the hatches and doorways, delaying recovery.

A commercial salvage company was hired to assist with cutting a hole in the deck so that access could be gained.

According to the statement the hole was cut but divers from neither the coast guard nor the commercial company could get pass the cargo and debris.

The statement says recognising that the only way to get through the blockage was to raise the Fair Chance; the salvage company began attempts to refloat her.

Finally yesterday the coast guard, accompanied by members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, was able to enter the vessel to begin the process of clearing the debris.

This leaves one person still unaccounted for according to the 2 surviving crewmembers rescued immediately after the vessel overturned.

The pumping went late into last evening.

School bells throughout the country to ring after 2 years as physical classes resume

All schools, except those in Tobago have opened their doors today.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be the first time in over 2 years many students will be in the classrooms full time and face to face.

Education Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby Dolly said this return to the physical classrooms is absolutely necessary.

On a Facebook post yesterday, the Minister recalled her own experience as a student, saying the socialisation within the school environment is critical.

But teachers and MTS security officers say there are many issues, which could hinder the process.

The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association says many schools are just not ready.

First Vice President Marlon Seales says there still many outstanding issues, which must be addressed before schools open their doors to students.

Meanwhile security officers attached to the National Maintenance Training and Security Company Limited are threatening action if the Education Ministry does not address their concerns.

Head of the representing the Estate Police Association Dereck Richardson says the Ministry has been late in paying the officers.

He says outstanding salaries are proving to be a big issue.

Speaking with Newscenter 5 yesterday, Mr. Richardson said his members may stay away from their duties today leaving students, teachers and other members of staff vulnerable.

Just about 228,000 students across the country are expected out today.

Sixteen hundred and 49 schools will be reopened.

Members of the transport industry threaten protest as new fuel prices kick in

Motorists have started paying more for gasoline at the pumps.

The new prices became effective at midnight.

Premium gasoline has been increased by $1 per liter to $6.75.

Super gasoline price is up by $1 to $5.97 per liter.

The price of diesel is now $3.91 per liter and kerosene is costing $3.50, up by 50 cents.

There were long lines at some gas stations yesterday as motorists tried to get their tanks filled at the old prices.

Some groups and motorists have not welcomed these increases.

Drivers and truckers are threatening a boycott today.

President of the Trinidad and Tobago Haulers Association Curtis Seepersad said yesterday at least 3 fuel price increases have occurred over the past years.

He said his members could go no further.

Political Leader of the Progressive Empower Party, Phillip Alexander said yesterday if the transport system were affected today, government would be to blame.

He called for consultation.

The Trinidad and Tobago Drivers Network President Adrian Acosta has called for taxi, maxi, and truck drivers to stay off the roads in protest today.

This suggestion has been extended to ordinary commuters.

Mr. Acosta said yesterday it is time people stand up for their rights and stop grumbling.

The Finance Minister Colm Imbert has said increases in the price of gasoline are never easy to absorb.

He said it is important to note that the price of gasoline in this country is the 2nd lowest out of 13 countries in the region in 2022.

St. Augustine MP says government is starving teachers

St. Augustine MP Khadijah Ameen

St. Augustine MP Khadijah Ameen says government is starving the nation’s teachers and some are even mentally stressed.

This she says is due to a lack of proper salaries.

Ms. Ameen says qualified persons in the teaching system are being underpaid; yet they are expected to carry out the duties of a full time educator.

She is of the view that a grade four teacher should be paid between $12,000 and $16,000 dollars per month.

Ms. Ameen says the situation has been impacting on the health of persons involved.

She also noted some teachers have been forced to take on a second job.

The Opposition MP points out that the last increase in teachers’ salaries was in 2014.

Ms. Ameen says the education ministry must rectify the situation urgently as many teachers are facing starvation and are being pushed over the edge mentally.
