4 murders overnight…among the dead 2 women

Gun violence claims the lives of 2 women.

One is identified as Kernella Saunders.

Up to news time the other was known only as Lashay.

According to police reports 27-year-old Ms. Lashay and her boyfriend Devon Lewis were on the roadway in Malabar, Arima last evening, when gunmen attacked them.

Police say 39-year-old Mr. Lewis was shot.

He ran leaving Ms. Lashay behind.

Reports say she sustained multiple bullet wounds about her body and died at the scene.

During the shooting a bullet entered the Daniel Trace, Malabar, Arima home through a window and struck 35-year-old Kernella Saunders in the neck. 

She was said to be walking the corridor of her home.

Ms. Saunders died inside her house.

Investigations are continuing.

And there is word of another murder in Aranguez.

The victim is Shiv Ramjattan.

He was 42-years-old.

Mr. Ramjattan was getting into his vehicle after locking up his business on Henry Street Aranguez last evening.

As he sat in his vehicle he was shot.

He reportedly drove his car to the Aranguez roundabout when he became unconscious.

He was taken to hospital where he died.

Another 4 murders after regional leaders end 2 day symposium on crime

As regional leaders ended a 2-day symposium on crime the country witnessed another 4 murders.

The killings took place in Couva, Arima and Aranguez.

In the latest incident the victim has been identified as Darius Cooper.

Reports say the incident took place at Roystonia at around 11:45 last night.

Newscenter 5 understands Mr. Cooper was at a car wash in the area when several explosion s were heard.

Residents called the police who later found Mr. Cooper bleeding from gunshot wounds unresponsive.

He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

“PAY ATTENTION TO HOW YOUNG MEN ARE SOCIALIZED” SAYS, JAMAICAN PRIME MINISTER

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness says, there is need for the region to pay attention to how young men are socialized.

Mr Holness says too often Caribbean males are the perpetrators of violence and the victims of crime.

He was speaking during the afternoon session of the Regional Symposium on Violence as a public health issue, now in its second day in Port of Spain Trinidad and Tobago

Like other leaders at the symposium Mr. Holness referred to the importation of illegal guns in the region.

He said, while the United States and other developed countries seek to protect their spaces from the tools of crime, it is not a one-way street.

He called for a war on guns.

Prime Minister Holness said, the time has also come for countries in this region to reform laws and the education systems.

St. Vincent and The Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, pointed to some key causes of crimes in this part of the world.

He parts ways with those who say depression; frustration and poverty are among the causes of violent crimes.

Dr. Gonsalves said there is a pattern, which must not be ignored.

The Prime Minister Of Barbados Mia Mottley, told the symposium there are some things which Caricom must make priority in the fight against violent crime.

The symposium ends today.

A BIRTHDAY PARTY ENDS IN TRAGEDY AND MAYHEM …ONE PERSON IS DEAD WHILE SEVEN ARE WOUNDED

As leaders discuss crime and violence in Port of Spain, the killings continue as a shooting incident leaves a woman dead and several others wounded in Arima.

The victim has been identified as Candice Griffith.

Reports say the incident took place at temple street around10 o’clock last night.

News Centre Five understands Ms. Griffith was at a party in the area with several other persons when men armed with guns, stormed the premises.

It is reported the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on the group of persons before escaping.

Residents in the area made checks and found 8 persons including Ms. Griffith bleeding from gunshot wounds.

Police were called to the scene.

When lawmen arrived they found the persons bleeding from gun shot wounds.

They were taken to the Arima General Hospital where Ms. Griffith was pronounced dead.

The other seven persons were listed in stable condition.

FIGHT BREAKS OUT BETWEEN RIVAL GANGS AT NIGHTCLUB

A fight breaks out between rival gangs at a nightclub on Ariapita Avenue.

The situation brought a party to an abrupt end during the early hours of this morning.

According to police, officers of the Port-of-Spain divisional task force received a report of the altercation at the corner of Ariapita Avenue and Carlos Street, at around 2:30 am.

When they arrived at the scene, they saw several people, mostly young adults, running in various directions.

In the chaos, police reportedly found one man with a wound to the left side of his face.

Patrons at the club told lawmen that members of two rival gangs from Port-of-Spain reportedly had an argument on the pavement and a fracas ensued. 

Reports say the gang members began throwing glass bottles at each other and gunshots also reportedly rang out.

The incident at the Coco Club was captured on video.

Officers from the Western Division Task Force also arrived at the scene.

They reportedly searched the area for gang members however, no one was arrested.

Speaking with News Centre Five yesterday, Port Of Spain Mayor Joel Martinez said called for a greater police presence is needed.

The City’s Mayor described the incident as very unfortunate.

Yesterday afternoon the management of the TZAR nightlife issued a statement saying the incident did not occur at its venue but next door.

DELIBERATIONS ARE SET, CARICOM LEADERS TRY TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS TO CRIME …BUT THE OPPOSITION HERE, IS NOT BUYING IT.

Caricom leaders will begin talks on violence as a public health issue.

The leaders are already in Trinidad and Tobago for the much talked about symposium.

Today and tomorrow the leaders will try to find workable solutions for the crime situation, which has plagued many of their territories.

Prime minister Dr Keith Rowley is the lead head of government in the region with responsibility for crime and security.

He is the host Prime Minister for the two-day event.

Chair of the organizing Inter-Ministerial Committee Minister Of Housing And Urban Development, Camille Robinson Regis says, members of the public can contribute to the discussions.

Mrs Robinson Regis also says it will be widely broadcast and streamed.

The symposium will see contributions from several regional experts and leaders including Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley and her Grenada counterpart Dickon Mitchell.

Caricom’s Secretary General Dr Carla Barnett will also speak this morning’s opening ceremony.

THREE KILLINGS OVER THE WEEKEND…. ALL THE VICTIMS ARE MALES

There have been three murders recorded over the weekend.

The incidents occurred in Maloney, Fyzabad and Arima.

In the latest incident Miguel Butler also known as Meeks is the victim.

He was 35 years old.

Reports say the incident took place at Evergale Avenue, Maloney Gardens around 4:15pm yesterday afternoon.

News Centre Five understands Mr.Butler and another man known only as Fights, were liming outside building 5 when a silver Nissan Ad Wagon pulled up.

Residents told police four armed men emerged, and opened fire killing Mr. Butler at the scene, Fights was also hit.

He ran towards building 3 where he collapsed.

He was taken to the Arima district hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the body of a 54-year-old man has been found close to a Panyard in Arima.

The victim is David Francis Rodriguez, his body was found on Saturday night near Nutones Panyard.

Mr. Rodriguez was found below a mango tree, blood was oozing from the back of the head.

A member of the public is said to have seen the dead man and flagged down a police SUV along Maurice Avenue in Arima.

Meanwhile a man was found dead on a bed in a house in Fyzabad yesterday morning.

Kern Alexis was shot in the head.

A man who lives on Dubarry Street Fyzabad told police at around three am he heard the explosions.

The man said he had given permission to stay two nights in his house.

He explained that after he heard the gunshots he found Mr. Alexis on a bed in a downstairs bedroom.

TOBAGO GETS ITS OWN FRAUD SQUAD OFFICE

The Trinidad And Tobago polices service says with the launch of the new facility, citizens, as well as officers of the squad, are set to benefit from fewer delays, more resources for the reporting and investigation of fraudulent activities in the Tobago division.

In release the TTPS says Acting Corporal Jamila Joseph Francis and WPC Donna Bunbury currently service the office.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police, white Collar Crime Division Wendell Lucas, the officers of the Tobago division will also stand to further benefit from the expertise and cross-training of the fraud squad, in various reports on the island which have some ingredients of white-collar crime.

The WCCD also comprises the Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau and the Financial Investigations Bureau, which ACP Lucas said, would soon be joining the fraud squad in the Tobago division.

The ACP explained, it is not only about the ability to build the investigative capacity on the island, but to have the officers in the Tobago division be exposed to more technical investigations, and so, strengthen their ability to investigate varied types of crimes.

The fraud squad office was launched on March 28th at the Shirvan Road police station.

POLICE INTERCEPT TWO FIREARMS AND OVER 30 ROUNDS OF AMUNITION IN A CAR ON BYPASS ROAD ARIMA.

Four firearms are seized in a police crackdown in the southern western and northern divisions.

Via a statement the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service says, officers’ seized four illegal guns, a quantity of ammunition and recovered a stolen vehicle.

The TTPS says during an operation grand slam exercise conducted in the Northern Division North yesterday. Officers received information and proceeded to Bye Pass Road Arima.

While there, the officers observed a silver Nissan Tiida motor vehicle with four occupants.

They stopped and searched the vehicle, during which time they allegedly found one Taurus pistol with two magazines and 15 rounds of nine millimeter ammunition, and one Glock 17 Austria with one extended magazine and 21 rounds of nine-millimeter ammunition.

All of the items were discovered on the back seat.

The four occupants were arrested and taken to the Arima Police Station.

Further enquiries revealed that the said motor vehicle was reported stolen, from the Mt. Hope Hospital car park on March 24th and beared false number plates.

In the Carenage District, officers stopped a 32-year-old man.

Lawmen allegedly found one firearm, seven rounds of ammunition and a camouflage cargo pants.

The items were seized and the man was arrested and charged.

Additionally, officers of the Southern Division Task Force (SDTF) conducted a firearm interdiction exercise, which resulted in the arrest of one man for possession of marijuana, and three counts of threatening a police officer in the execution of his duties.

The exercise continued and based on information received, officers proceeded to Saunders Trace, Moruga where one shotgun was found, hidden under some branches.

ROAD DEATHS INCREASE, AS A WOMAN AND HER UNBORN CHILD ARE KILLED IN A CAR CRASH.

Relatives of Chavelle Mitcham are plunged into mourning. 

Miss Mitchum and her unborn baby lost their lives in a crash, on the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway yesterday

Reports say at around 7:45 Miss Mitcham’s Suzuki Swift crashed into  a utility pole, while she was on her way to work in the East.

Miss Mitcham was a pharmacy technician who lived at Sobo Circular Road Chinese Village.

She was said to be five months pregnant.

Reports are saying the woman attempted to avoid a collision by pulling away from another vehicle.

Her vehicle flipped several times before crashing into the pole, it then landed on its hood.

She was removed from the wreckage and taken to the Couva district health facility where she was pronounced dead.

The road traffic death tally so far this year is being put at, 23 compared to 31 for the same period in 2022.
