A 35 YEAR OLD PHARMACIST….THE LATEST DENGUE FATALITY….

One day after being diagnosed with the deadly dengue fever, the virus claimed the life of Rakesh Daryl Nanlal.

The 35 year-old was a pharmacist at the Eric Williams Medical Science Complex.

The Preysal man was admitted to the hospital, in which he worked, for treatment after battling worsening symptoms last Wednesday.

According to relatives, Mr. Nanlal discharged himself after being treated with intravenous drips, as he was feeling some relief.

However, by Thursday he had significantly deteriorated and began to bleed.

He was rushed back to the facility for treatment where he eventually died.

Relatives said, an autopsy performed on Friday confirmed that virus had killed him.

Mr. Nanlal, who lived with his wife of six years Devi Ramdin, was yesterday mourned by his family, friends, co-workers and neighbours during a funeral service at the family’s home in Nanan Trace, Preysal.

Her relatives held Ms. Ramdin, overcome with grief, as she completed the final Hindu rituals.

At the service, Mr. Nanlal, who attended St. Mary’s College and graduated from the University of the West Indies with his Bachelor’s Degree in pharmacy, was remembered for his brilliance, and his ability to be a light to those in need.

AN ACCIDENT LEADS TO THE DEATHS OF TWO FRIENDS…THE VEHICLE IS FOUND IN THE CIPERO RIVER…

Two friends have died in an accident in San Fernando.

Sachin Teeluckdharry and Ryan Ramnanan lost their lives when the vehicle they were in, ran off the highway and plunged into the Cipero River yesterday.

Mr. Teeluckdharry and Mr. Ramnanan were part of a group of friends, in the pick up when it crashed.

The Hunters’ Search and Rescue team is said to have discovered the bodies, at around 2:38 am yesterday.

Sachin Teeluckdharry was from Clarke Road, Penal, and Ryan Ramnanan, lived at Tulsa Trace, San Francique.

When news of the accident spread relatives, and onlookers gathered at the bridge along the Solomon Hochoy Highway.

The bridge passes over the river.

Emergency vehicles parked on the road, created traffic congestion for hours, as Mon Repos firefighters worked to retrieve the bodies from the wreckage.

One of the friends told police he last saw the men, when he overtook Mr. Teeluckdharry’s Nissan Navara near the Gasparillo interchange.

HSR team captain Vallence Rambharat is reported as saying, his team received the distress call from Mr. Teeluckdharry’s family at 9.38 am, asking for assistance after the men did not return to their homes.

Calls to their phones were unanswered.

The families then made a report to the police.

THE SEARCH IS ON FOR THREE TEENS MISSING FROM RAINBOW HOUSE…

Two men, yet to be identified have been shot and killed by police, during an incident in Guayaguayare.

Another man is said, to have fled the scene of the shooting, which occurred yesterday morning.

It is believed, the third person that was among the suspected shooters, was also shot and wounded.

The incident took place around 2 a.m.

After officers of the Mayaro criminal investi­gations department received information, and went to a wooden shack off a dirt track in La Brea Village, Guayaguayare.

Police claim, as they arrived at the location, they went into the house, announcing their presence.

However, they say they were shot at.

The officers returned fire hitting the men.

The officers took the wounded men to a medical institution, but they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Police say, they also recovered a loaded shotgun at the scene.

The two men were the 21st and 22nd people to be killed in police-involved shootings for the year so far.

1.27 MILLION AWARDED TO THREE VENEZUELAN CHILDREN…

The office of the attorney general has been ordered by the high court to pay a combined total of, $1.27 million to three Venezuelan children who were detained at the Chaguaramas heliport.

The court says, their detention was unlawful.

On Tuesday master Shurlanne Pierre directed that the state pay each of the children, ages 12, seven and two, $425,000 plus interest.

The master of the court said, the children are being compensated “for the ordeal they suffered”, and the “torturous acts committed against them.

The money is to be paid into the court, and will then be placed in an interest-bearing account by the registrar of the high court.

They will not be allowed to access the money until they attain the age of 18, but in the interim, their mother may apply to the court for access to money from the account to meet their immediate needs.

The siblings and their mother were detained at the heliport from December 15th, 2020, to February 17th 2021.

A deportation order was issued for the mother on January 12th, 2021, but not the children.

They had formed part of a larger group of Venezuelans, which arrived in this country on board a pirogue on November 17th, 2020.

SHOW RESPECT TO YOUR ANCESTORS SAYS, PRIME MINISTER…

The Prime Minister is calling on Africans in Trinidad and Tobago to show respect, to the ancestors and the achievements over the years.

Speaking outside the Treasury building at the start of yesterday’s march to the Savannah, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said, respect and recognition are important.

Dr. Rowley said, there are benefits to be gained if respect is the focus.

The Prime Minister then revealed leaders of this region, are preparing to attend the commonwealth heads of government meeting in Samoa.

HAND HELD DEVICES HANDED OVER TO MONITOR ILLEGAL TINT…

Hand held devices are to be among the tools used by licensing officers to crack down on illegal tints on vehicles on the nation’s roads.

Transport Minister, Rohan Sinanan, presented the devices yesterday.

They are to be used in activating the 2020 tint regulations in 2024

The devices are called visible light transmittance or VLT

Transport Commissioner Clive Clarke said, there are some operating factors, which must be noted.

He said, once the tint regulations are enforced with the use of the measuring devices some old practices are to be no more.

Commissioner Clarke said, there are some levels of tints, which are not allowed even though the VLT says, its ok for use.

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds welcomed the use of the VLT, particularly because of the reports he has gotten.

The measuring tool is to be put to immediate use by licensing officers.

NEURO DENGUE ON THE INCREASE…PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ARE TOLD CHILDREN ARE VULNERABLE.

A senior public health practitioner wants careful attention to be paid to children and young adults, as data shows they are the most vulnerable to dengue fever infection.

Statistics show that over 70% of dengue fever cases are persons between the ages of, 6 to 20 years old.

In addition, young children are said to be at significant risk of becoming critical.

Senior pediatric emergency medicine specialist Dr. Joanne Paul, describes the symptoms as “neuro dengue”.

Dr. Paul also says, their platelets drop rapidly taking them from the fever to critical phase in a short space of time.

She asked parents to pay close attention to those with, sickle cell anemia and other ailments.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh says, children 11 – 15 are mostly affected.

He too calls on parents to do their part.

Speaking on TV6’s morning edition programme yesterday, minister Deyalsingh said, the death toll remains at five with 509 cases.

Meanwhile, Dr. Paul sounded the alarm on cases of other viruses, which she says are on the increase.

Dr. Paul noted, that other Caricom countries are grappling with similar diseases and viruses.

TWO YEAR OLD KAMARION WILSON DROWNS IN AN INFLABTABLE POOL…

The probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of, two-year-old Kamarion Wilson is ongoing.

The child is believed to have drowned while in an inflatable pool, in Laventille last Sunday afternoon.

The toddler was at the home of his aunt Kizzie Paul at upper Erica Street, Rock City in Laventille.

Reports are saying, the pool was being filled with water while Kamarion and other children were playing in it.

Ms. Paul told the police she was in the kitchen cooking, when she was told by one of the children that Kamarion was not breathing.

She went to investigate and saw, Kamarion in the pool unresponsive.

The child was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at around.

NEW MINISTER IN THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL SECURITY…

Newly appointed Minister, in the Ministry of National Security, Keith Scotland gets a positive review from attorney-at-law Martin George.

Mr. George believes, minister Scotland has started his job on the right track.

The head of the Tobago Business Chamber, makes the comment even as he says, people are living in a state of national insecurity.

Mr. George says, minister Scotland contacted him, expressing concerns on the issue of crime in Tobago.

He says, the minister has also toured some of the crime hotspots in Trinidad.

Mr. George says, the minister must now try to rebuild public confidence, in national security.

He was speaking on TV6’s Morning Edition programme, yesterday.

He said Mr. Scotland’s appointment to the ministry shows that not enough was being done, to curb crime by those in charge.

Mr. Scotland was appointed minister with specific focus, on the police service.

Yesterday, Mr. George who is also a former member of the Police Service Commission said, this appointment and the state of crime, speak for themselves.

He also criticized the Police Service Commission saying, it has been silent, on Commissioner Erla Harewood Christopher’s performance.
