The PDP wants the posts of Deputy Chief Secretary, Deputy Presiding Officer and Finance Secretary

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley

The Progessive Democratic Patriots says there will be no negotiating its demand for the positions of Deputy Chief Secretary, Deputy Presiding Officer and Finance Secretary.

The positions are contained in a proposal submitted to the Peoples National Movement’s Tobago Council Leader, Tracy Davidson Celestine.

It was one of the outcomes of yesterday’s meeting with all 12 assemblymen, which was chaired by prime minister dr. Keith rowley.

This morning, Political Leader of the PDP, Watson Duke said he wants no confrontation but the 3 positions as stated, can be considered the deal breaker.

On The Morning Show on i95.5fm today, Mr. Duke said he believes the Prime Minister genuinely wants to settle the stalemate which followed the January 25th  Tobago House of Assembly election.

Both the PNM and the PDP won 6 seats in that poll.

Mr. Duke said there is no want for power sharing, but for an amalgamation that can benefit the people represented by the 2 parties.

And former Chief Secretary of the THA, Hochoy Charles, believes yesterday’s meeting came way too late.

But Mr. Charles believes what is being proposed is good for the short term.

And Prime Minister Dr. Rowley said this morning talks can now begin in earnest about settling the matter.

Dr. Rowley was speaking on Channel 5 in Tobago.

Senator Khan also cited his opposition colleague’s behaviour in the House last week as disturbing.

He is of the view that Senator Roberts should be penalised on both counts.

Senate President Kangaloo replied saying the matters are now being considered by Vice President of the Senate Nigel De Freitas who will deliver a ruling in due course.

Watch your conduct!!! Warning to senators from President of the Upper House

President of the Upper House Christine Kangaloo

A strict warning to Senators from President of the Upper House Christine Kangaloo.

She tells them to improve their conduct in the House.

Moments before the start of the senate yesterday President Kangaloo reminded Senators by way of Standing Order 2 Sub Section 5, the powers of the Presiding Officer.

President Kangaloo suggested that Senators acquaint themselves with rules of the House especially those that spell out their required conduct.

The head of the Upper House said while she appreciates the passion that feeds debate, Senators must remember that their conduct must always be kept in check.

Further the Senate President added that legislators must ensure they are an example to every citizen.

The statements by the Senate President come after an outburst by Senator Anil Roberts last Thursday.

Senator Roberts was asked to leave the chamber following conduct ruled by the Senate President to be unbecoming of the House.

Prime Minister to meet with THA Assemblymen today

Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley is to meet with all Assemblymen in Tobago this morning.

He will also hold another meeting with Chief Secretary Ancil Dennis and some of his predecessors.

The topic is the existing deadlock, which followed the January 25th Tobago House of Assembly election.

Following that election the ruling Peoples National Movement and the Progressive Democratic Patriots each got six electoral districts.

Both sides have not been able to elect a Presiding Officer.

The PDP has said today’s meeting is a public relations stunt but its members will attend.

The Tobago House of Assembly Amendment Bill has been passed in the Senate.

However there was no support for it from the Opposition and the independent bench.

The Bill seeks to settle the deadlock in the Tobago House of Assembly

Late last night, after hours of debate the bill received the simple majority it needed.

The bill was passed in the lower house almost two weeks ago.

Once proclaimed, it would, among other things, allow for the establishment of 15 electoral districts in Tobago.

Earlier in the debate, President of the Senate, Christine Kangaloo ejected Wade Mark from the chamber.

His reported interjections while the Attorney General was winding up debate on the Bill got Mr. Mark in some trouble with the Senate President.

Senator Mark was later allowed to return to the sitting, which was at the time in the committee stage.

Bunny Wailer dies at age 73

Bunny Wailer & Bob Marley

One of reggae’s most important voices, Bunny Wailer, has died at the age of 73.

The musician, from Kingston, Jamaica, was a founding member of The Wailers alongside his childhood friend, Bob Marley.

Together, they achieved international fame with reggae classics like Simmer Down and Stir It Up, before Wailer left to go solo in 1974.

He went on to win three Grammys and was given Jamaica’s Order Of Merit in 2017.

Manager Maxine Stowe, and Jamaica’s Culture Minister, Olivia Grange confirmed his death.

The cause of death is unknown, but he had been in hospital since having a stroke in July 2020.

Tributes have already poured in for the musician, with fans and fellow musicians describing him as a legend.

“This is one of the lowest moment in the history of our culture,” wrote dancehall artist Shaggy on Facebook. “You have made us proud king. Rest well.”

“Oh man, god bless Bunny Wailer,” wrote Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, Flea. “What a true rocker and noble man. I love him.”

Andrew Holness, Jamaica’s prime minister, also paid tribute, calling his death “a great loss for Jamaica and for reggae”.

The star, whose real name was Neville O’Riley Livingston, had been the last surviving member of The Wailers, following Bob Marley’s death from cancer in 1981, and Peter Tosh’s murder during a robbery in 1987.
