T&T men’s 4x100m Olympic team to receive long-awaited gold medals

Trinidad and Tobago’s 2008 Olympic men’s 4×100-metre relay team will receive their long-awaited gold medals tomorrow.

The ceremony will be held at the International Olympic Committee headquarters in Switzerland.

The team of Richard Thompson, Keston Bledman, Emmanuel Callander, Marc Burns and Aaron Armstrong, along with TTOC President Diane Henderson, are expected to arrive in Switzerland today.

Initially, T&T earned silver at the Beijing Olympics, behind Jamaican quartet Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Michael Frater and Nesta Carter.

However, in 2017, Carter was found guilty of a doping violation and Jamaica was stripped of their gold medals.

AG gets full support from PM again

Embattled Attorney General Reginald Amour gets the full support of the Prime Minister again, even as there continue to be calls for his removal from the Cabinet.

Dr. Keith Rowley is seeking to set the record straight, saying Mr. Amour was not disqualified in the Piarco Airport matter in the United States.

He said Mr. Amour recused himself.

Dr. Rowley said some of what he has been seeing and hearing about the matter is inaccurate and is coming from those whom he calls the “Section 34 Brigade”.

He said the then Peoples Partnership government to benefit its friends misused his vote.

He spared no words when responding to the Law Association’s position on the matter.

The association is to meet later this month to take a vote on the matter involving the head of the bar, Reginald Amour.

Weekend murder toll ends at 14 with 2 killings overnight

Two more murders in Laventille and Sangre Grande take the weekend tally to 14.

In Laventille, Kevon Pacheco also known as “Thickie” was gunned down in the Picton area at 11 o’clock last night.

And the bullet-riddled body of a man is found in Sangre Grande moments after he stole a vehicle belonging to a woman.

He is yet to be identified.

Reports say minutes after robbing the woman at gunpoint the bandit was found dead outside the stolen car along Camparo Trace off Flemming Street, in Fishing Pond with his gun clutched in his hand.

And Tyrone Nehoeah was stabbed to death at his Berridge Trace home in south Oropuche at 10:40 am yesterday.

He was 51-years-old.

In Cocotrite the dead are identified as Giovani Lashley and Shemeul Robinson.

They were gunned down in an area known as Waterhole at 9:30 am yesterday.

And a Venezuelan national who is yet to be identified was stabbed to death during the early hours of yesterday morning in Duncan Village, San Fernando.

That incident occurred at Club Up Top, SS Erin Road at 2am yesterday.

And Shaquille Pierre died at hospital yesterday from gunshot wounds he sustained 2 weeks ago.

On Saturday Dexter Benjamin, Curtis Harriot and Evans Henry were murdered in separate situations.

While Kerron Pope, Carlton Campbell Elijah Farrel and Kevon Andrews were ambushed and killed at Damien Bay, Maracas.

And the man shot dead in Valencia is yet to be identified.

On Saturday Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley it is time for the country to treat the issue with urgency.

Dr. Rowley was speaking with reporters ahead of his departure to a CARICOM meeting in Suriname.

Yesterday the Opposition United National Congress said crime is out of control.

Former UNC Senator Sean Sobers said the government would be seeking to blame everyone but it.

However, he said when the Bail Amendment Bill returns to the Parliament this week it would not be supported by the UNC.

Mr. Sobers was speaking at a media conference yesterday.

Off-duty soldier arrested

An off-duty soldier is arrested after he was allegedly found with ammunition, assaulted a police officer and resisted arrest.

The TTPS says the incident happened in Belmont last Saturday morning.

Police say officers of the Port of Spain Task Force on patrol near Keate and Charlotte Streets at around 11:45pm stopped and searched the soldier and found a quantity of ammunition.

It is reported that while officers were trying to arrest him, he cursed them, resisted arrest and assaulted one of the officers.

According to the TTPS, police managed to subdue the man and took him to the Besson Street Police Station, where he was expected to be charged for failing to comply, using obscene language, resisting arrest, using threatening language, assaulting an officer and possession of ammunition.

The soldier, who is from Belmont, is assigned to Camp Ogden.

In an unrelated incident, at around 12:30pm police arrested a woman at the Port of Spain General Hospital for using obscene language.

CAL announces flight disruptions due to tropical storm

Caribbean Airlines advises there will be disruptions to its domestic and international flights due to the tropical storm warning issued for Trinidad and Tobago and the severe weather conditions expected between June 28th through July 1st.  

The announcement was made via a statement last evening.

CAL says another update will follow at 12noon today.

Passengers are encouraged to register for real-time flight notifications and updates via the website.

The airline also says customers can check the status of a flight by route or flight number using the flight status tab on the Caribbean Airlines homepage.

Potential cyclone fixed on the southern Windward Islands

Schools are closed today as the country prepares for the arrival of a potential cyclone.

This morning at 5am the system was said to be 680 kilometers east of Trinidad.

The system was moving towards the west near 23 miles per hour.

The MET Service says on the forecast track, the system will pass near or over portions of the Southern Windward Islands tonight.

As a result, Trinidad and Tobago remains under a tropical storm warning.

The Ministry of Education says all primary schools are closed and so too secondary schools, which do not have CAPE examinations today.

CAPE exams will be conducted as scheduled.

Principals are to inform teaching and non-teaching staff essential to the examinations that they are to report for duty.

All other teaching and non-teaching staff is asked to remain at home.

All agencies and systems have been activated.

Last evening, the head of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management, Major General Rodney Smart cautioned members of the public.

And the Chief Secretary says Tobago is ready for the severe adverse weather system, which is expected to impact the country tonight.

Addressing an emergency news conference yesterday Chief Secretary Farley Augustine said the island is ready.

He called for people to remain calm.

And director of the Tobago Emergency Management Agency Allan Stewart said the island had been this way before.

Murders recorded in Moruga and Sangre Grande

Two people have been killed, and a woman wounded during different situations overnight.

Carlos Harris Phillip is the most recent victim.

According to reports Mr. Phillip was at 5th company St. Mary’s Village Moruga after 9pm when he was shot.

Mr. Phillip was taken to the Princes Town where he reportedly succumbed to his wounds

Earlier at around 7:30 pm a domestic dispute turned fatal after an ex-boyfriend allegedly attacked a woman and her mother.

Police say they received a trouble call informing them of a woman lying in her driveway bleeding.

Officers proceeded to Neil Street, Sangre Grande and discovered 31-year-old Taylor Benson with chop wounds to her face and body.

Ms. Benson reportedly had a conversation with police.  

A short distance away another woman, 53-year-old Tricia Badaloo lay motionless with chop wounds about the body.

Police say Ms. Badaloo showed no signs of life.

According to police, Ms. Badaloo was the mother of Ms. Benson.

Police are now hunting for the suspect.

The 2 killings followed the shooting and wounding of Nikita Nanan.

Newscenter 5 understands 31-year-old Ms. Nanan was shot in central at around 7:15pm last night.

Police reports say she is now undergoing emergency surgery.

Police know Ms. Nanan also known as “Godmother”.

Kamla Persad Bissessar leads the Opposition United National Congress again

Opposition Leader of the UNC, Kamla Persad Bissessar

Kamla Persad Bissessar has been elected to serve another term as the Political Leader of the Opposition United National Congress.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar’s Star team won the internal elections yesterday.

From all reports every member of the team won the positions, which were being contested.

Initial reports say close to 13,000 members of the party voted yesterday.

After victory was declared, Mrs. Persad Bissessar was grateful to the membership.

She also had some words for the critics and challengers.

Former Member of Parliament, Dr Fuad Khan, challenged Mrs. Persad Bissessar for the leadership position.

After he voted yesterday he said he was confident of victory.

Dr. Khan lost his bid.

Police engaging murder of Lenny Hoyte

The murder of Lenny Hoyte is now engaging the attention of police

According to police reports during the early hours of yesterday morning, 62-year-old Mr. Hoyte was at his Hoyte Avenue, Maturita home having a conversation with a female relative.

It is said during the conversation explosions were heard.

Another member of the household went outside and found Mr. Hoyte motionless under a shed on the eastern side of the premises.

He had several gunshot wounds about the body.

Police are probing the homicide.

A pregnant woman is 1 of 2 persons shot dead over the weekend

A pregnant woman is one of 2 people shot and killed in different circumstances in Arima and Diego Martin.

The incidents occurred between Saturday and yesterday.

Dhanmatie Paray and a male friend were at the corner of Mason Street and the Diego Martin Main Road on Saturday night.

They were shot from within a moving vehicle.

The man is hospitalised.
