2 more murders overnight

Two more murders overnight.

The killings occurred in Valencia and Chaguanas minutes apart.

In Valencia the victim is identified as Michael Tramcome.

Reports say he was among 3 men shot in the area.

The others are Anthony Hopkins and Calden Lopez.

The trio was said to be liming along the Toco Main Road near the junction last night when at around 7:40pm they were approached by armed men who opened fire on them.

Mr. Tramcome died at the scene.

Mr. Lopez and Mr. Hopkins were taken to hospital where they remain warded.

Minutes earlier a man was gunned down in Enterprise Chaguanas.

He is identified only by his alias, Poppy Boss.

Newscenter 5 understands the he was at Chrissy Terrace at around 7:35pm last night when he was killed.

First Procedural Hearing for the Commission of Enquiry into the Paria tragedy starts today

The first Procedural Hearing for the Commission of Enquiry into the Paria tragedy begins today.

It will set the stage for the Evidentiary Hearing to come later this year.

The Procedural Hearing will take place today and tomorrow at Tower D of the International Waterfront Center, Port of Spain.

Lead Counsel to the Commission Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj SC says this hearing is solely to set out the arrangements for the Evidentiary Hearing and no evidence is being heard at this stage of the enquiry.

He says the Commission is in the investigative stage.

Mr. Maharaj says the report stage comes next where the Commissioners would prepare their report.

Maharaj said the COE has so far reviewed thousands of pages of documentary evidence.

The Commission has been tasked with probing the circumstances, which led to the drowning deaths of 4 LMCS divers who were conducting repairs on an underwater pipeline on February 25th, 2022.

Christopher Boodram, Fyzal Kurban, Rishi Nagassar, Kazim Ali Jr and Yusuf Henry went to Paria’s Pointe-a-Pierre facility to conduct maintenance works on a pipeline when they were sucked in.

Private divers who defied orders and went in search of the men rescued Mr. Boodram.

The other 4 died.

FUL audit report will not be laid in the Parliament

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley will not be laying the controversial Firearm Users License audit report in the Parliament.

The House of Representatives re-opens next Monday.

In July this year, Dr. Rowley said he had received the report, which he described as “very disturbing reading”.

He had said then, that he would send it to the Police Service Commission and Acting Police Commissioner Mcdonald Jacob.

He also said then the report’s executive summary would be laid in the Parliament when it re-opens.

Former Commissioner Gary Griffith has said he was happy good sense had prevailed.

There are now 7 cases of Monkey Pox in Jamaica

There are now 7 cases of the Monkey Pox virus in Jamaica.

Two more people tested positive last week.

The cases are said to be locally acquired.

Health authorities say contact tracing has started.

The Opposition, People’s National Party is urging the Health and Wellness Ministry to be more transparent and consistent in its updates to the country about the Monkey Pox virus. 

This as there has been conflicting reports about the country’s Monkey Pox case count.

Opposition spokesperson on Health, Dr. Morais Guy pointed out that the Ministry had promised weekly updates on the virus.

He said there needs to be more transparency in the reporting of cases.

He was speaking at an online party news conference yesterday.

Central Division police capture leads to breakthrough

Thirty-year-old Anthony Hoyte, of Roystonia, Couva is expected to appear before the Chaguanas Magistrate’s Court today.

His capture led to a breakthrough by central division officers in a robbery incident involving men purporting to be police officers.

According to the police service he faces 3 counts of robbery with violence, 2 counts of assault with intent to rob, 1 count of robbery with aggravation and 5 counts of false imprisonment.

He was charged on Saturday.

According to reports, a group of 5 men dressed in what appeared to be police tactical wear and armed, approached a man at Derrick Road, Chase Village and announced a robbery.

The men then allegedly took the man to a nearby residence where they relieved him of his cell phone.

The suspects allegedly, then entered the house where they bound 2 of the 3 occupants and relieved them of a quantity of cash and jewelry.

The men also reportedly stole a white Toyota Fielder from the owner in a bid to escape, after they met an obstruction and were forced to abandon their vehicle.

The vehicle owner’s cell phone was also stolen.

Villagers marooned because of landslide

Villagers in at least 3 parts of the North Oropouche Road found themselves marooned because of a landslide.

Crews from the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation spent most of yesterday working on clearing the areas.

Chairman of the corporation Anil Juteram says the landslip occurred just before midnight on Saturday.

Residents of Fishing Pond, Limon and Flemming were affected.

Villagers were also left without a pipe borne water supply.

North Side Road in Castara partially open

Northside Road, Castara, Tobago

The North Side Road heading into Castara will be partially open today to facilitate the reopening of schools in Tobago.

The north side road between Castara Down River and the “Welcome to Castara” sign was closed to all traffic last week Tuesday.

The closure came following a rotational failure of the slope in this area following weeks of heavy rain.

Thousands of children return to school today as the new term begins … TTUTA says teacher may not be in attendance

Teachers have been instructed by the representing Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association to boycott school today.

It is the union’s way of rejecting the chief personnel officer’s four percent wage increase offer.

The new school term begins today but teachers may not be in attendance.

Last week TTUTA President Antonia De Freitas said her members were told to stay away from classes today.

A release yesterday reiterated the union’s position.

TTUTA said it expects thousands of its members to heed the call and boycott the opening of the new term.

But in Tobago the Division of Education is telling parents and guardians to send their children to school today.

Assistant Secretary for Education and former TTUTA representative in Tobago, Orlando Kerr yesterday said today is a normal school day despite the planned boycott.

And the Minister of Education Dr Nyan Gadsby Dolly issued a video message yesterday welcomed all stakeholders to the new school year.

She also told of her Ministry’s plans for the sector this year.

She is calling on parents to help the Ministry when it comes to disciplining their children.

2 more die as a result of COVID

Two more people have died as a result of the coronavirus.

This brings the total number of deaths to 4,134.

The deceased are one elderly male and one middle-aged male.

One person had multiple comorbidities and one had a known comorbidity.

In its latest update the Ministry of Health says there are 154 new infections, bringing the total active positive cases to 6,206.

It says 239 persons are at hospital in relation to COVID-19.
