St James/St Ann’s taxi fares to increase by June 1st

taxiTaxi operators plying the St. Ann’s & St. James routes are set to increase their fares by one dollar.

The increase takes effect on June 1st.

The fare increase was announced by Vice-President of the St Ann’s Taxi Association  Ronald Frederick.

According to Mr Frederick, the increase, the first in eight years, was a result of the removal of the fuel subsidy for diesel gas and the rising cost of living.

Increases in off route fares have not yet been announced.

SRP officer murdered in Arouca

Unknown-24There are reports of another early morning murder. The victim, Special Reserve Police officer Jason Cyril John.

He was shot and killed in Arouca around 12:30 this morning.

Police say, Constable John was on his way home at William Trace, Five Rivers when he was approached by an assailant who opened fire on him.

It is said at the time of the shooting he was on his cellular phone with his wife. She told investigators her husband had just told her he was almost home when she heard loud explosions.

The officer was later found lying on the roadway. He had a gunshot wound to the head.

Constable John was rushed to the Arima Hospital, where he died a short while later.

He was attached to the Court & Process Branch in Port-Of-Spain.

Officers of the Northern Divisional Task Force are investigating.

Soldier shot dead in Arima

A soldier is gunned down at his Arima home.

He is identified as Corporal Jerry Leacock.

The incident occurred during the early hours of this morning. Reports say around 5:30, Corporal Leacock was at his Jacob Hill home when he was awakened by his wife’s screams.

It is said the officer ran into the living room area of the house where he was confronted by four men, one of them armed with a gun.

The suspect then opened fire hitting Corporal Leacock in the chest. The men then stole the officer’s vehicle and made good their escape.

42 year old Corporal Leacock was attached to the Cumuto camp.

Police are searching for the suspects.

Elderly man chopped to death in Rio Claro

Unknown-12A 33 year old man surrenders to police in connection with the murder of Mookram Kanhai.

The 65-year-old gardener was killed in Rio Claro, during the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police say around 4.20, Mr Kanhai of Mahabalsingh Branch Trace # 2, Navet Village, Rio Claro and a male relative got into an altercation over land.

It is said during the altercation Mr Kanhai was chopped about the body, including the face and head. Police say his right arm was was also severed.

The suspect is then said to have contacted the police and told officers of the Rio Claro station what he had done. Officers visited the scene and reportedly found Mr Kanhai dead.

The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

He is expected to appear before a Rio Claro magistrate.
