Government’s decision to cancel Carnival is being described as “dictatorial”

Soca singer Darryl ‘Farmer Nappy’ Henry

Government’s decision to cancel Carnival 2021 is being described as “dictatorial”.

Soca singer Darryl ‘Farmer Nappy’ Henry says what is needed is consultation on the possibilities, which can now be created.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley weeks ago said there would be no Carnival because of the COVID-19 pandemic and this country’s bid to curb infections.

However Mr. Henry says he has been in discussions with artiste Jaiga TC about the staging of events.

Mr. Henry was speaking on the Legends and Legacies program on i95.5fm last Saturday.

Cohost and music producer Sheriff supported his idea.

Early morning landslide in Tobago

An early morning landslide affects several communities and the flow of traffic along the North Side Road in Tobago.

The landslide occurred in the wee hours of this morning at Mount Dillon Hill along the North Side Road.

Director of the Tobago Emergency Management Agency Allan Stewart tells commuters to use alternate routes where possible.

Members of TEMA’s Cert teams have also reported other landslides, which pose a threat to utility lines.

According to Mr. Stewart it will take several hours for the landslides to be cleared.

Affected areas include Castara, Parlatuvier, Bloody Bay and L’anse Fourmi.

This incident came after some early morning rain, which would have saturated the soil.

As of 2pm yesterday the MET office at the ANR Robinson International Airport in Crown Point recorded 268.5 millimetres of rain for the month of November.

There were also heavy showers in parts of northern and eastern Tobago.

Teams from the Division of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment have been mobilized to attend to the situation.

Court orders Venezuelan migrant and her 2 children moved from police station cell

The court has ordered a Venezuelan mother and her 2 children removed from a cell at the Erin Police Station.

The family is now at a quarantine facility at the heliport in Chaguaramas.

Nelisbeth Contreras and her 2 children were taken to the facility yesterday morning, as ordered by Justice Avason Quinlan-Williams.

The children are aged 5 and 9-years-old.

The mother and children were among a group of 27 Venezuelans held at the station since Tuesday afternoon.

The other migrants including 14 children were to be removed as well.

The migrants are to remain in the quarantine facility until their challenge of their deportation is heard and determined by the High Court.

Justice Quinlan-Williams said on Wednesday evening the situation could not continue the way it has been, with children being placed in jail like facilities or police stations.

The group was deported and escorted out of the country by the Coast Guard last Sunday.

However the migrants returned to Trinidad and Tobago.

The deportations have triggered international condemnation, and a defense from the government here.
