GETAWAY CAR CRASHES INTO TUNAPUNA POLICE STATION…

Drama at the Tunapuna police station, as alleged bandits open fire on police, and crash their getaway car into one of the walls of a station.

Reports say, the incident unfolded on Tuesday night in Tunanpuna.  

According to police, the two men robbed the cashier of a lotto booth, in the vicinity of the market at around 7.30 pm.

They were confronted by police, and one of the men opened fire on the officers, while his accomplice drove off in white wagon.

Officers reportedly returned fire and injured the alleged bandit. 

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

In the meantime, officers of the north-central division gang intelligence unit chased the other suspects’ car.

The vehicle crashed into the wall of the Tunapuna police station.

The driver was arrested.

Police allegedly found and seized a Smith and Wesson firearm, and 15 rounds of ammunition.

POLICE OFFICERS INSISTS THEY MUST BE PAID OUTSTANDING INCREMENTS …

Police Social and Welfare Association ASP Gideon Dickson

The Police Social and Welfare Association says, security for the upcoming carnival celebrations may be in jeopardy.

President Gideon Dickson, makes the statement against the backdrop that some of its serving members may not receive the promised back pay.

Mr. Dickson says, the association agreed to the 4 percent wage increase offer 11 months ago, but to date they are yet to be compensated.

Speaking with Newscentre five this morning, Asp. Dickson said, the issue poses a security threat.

Asp. Dickson, also revealed that several interventions on their behalf have not been productive.

Asp. Dickson called on authorities to ensure, that officers are given their just dues in a reasonable time frame.

SRP FACED WITH SEX CRIME CHARGES…

Sex crime charges are leveled against a special reserve officer, attached to the San Fernando station.

33-year-old Kwame Phillip has been arrested and charged.

Last Saturday constable Phillip was taken in by his colleagues in San Fernando.

It is alleged that on August 18th last year, the officer sexually assaulted the woman in St. Ann’s Port of Spain.

The alleged victim told police the princes’ town man, raped her twice and she was also sodomized.

Officer Phillip is a SRP attached to the San Fernando police station.

On the request for bail before a court, the accused attorney Kiran Panday said, officer Phillip has two young children and no pending criminal matters against him.

The prosecution objected to bail, for fear of witness interference.

However, bail was set at 550 thousand dollars.

Officer Phillip has to report to the princes’ town station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

He was told to stay at least 200 feet, away from the alleged victim

The matter was adjourned to April 24th, 2024.

CIVIL SOCIETIES TO HOLD THEIR OWN ANTI- CRIME TALKS…

Another group is about to stage a series of anti crime talks, hoping to find solutions to the most pressing issue for the people of this country.

Civil society organizations, are preparing to begin the talks later this month.

Yesterday veteran trade unionist David Abdullah and representatives from other organizations gathered in Port of Spain, to tell of the plans for the talks.

One of the stakeholders is Rubaderie Victor.

He said, it is time for serious talk on the issue of crime in the country.

One week ago, the opposition United National Congress began its anti crime talks.

It was a response to the failure of plans for the government and the opposition, to meet and address the most pressing issue in the country.

Mr. Abdullah said, there is an absence of the kind of talks that would benefit the country.

Representing the oilfield workers trade union, which will be part of the civil society talks, Ozzie Warwick said, there must be solutions.

The first event is scheduled for January 31st at the Cipriani Labour College.

At the end of the series, a document will be submitted to the powers that be.

THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION UNRAVELS THE CAUSE OF FINANCIAL CHALLENGES AT UWI OPEN CAMPUS…

Education Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby Dolly

The current financial challenges at the University of the West Indies, open campus are being blamed on the funding model.

Minister of Education Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly says, the open campus has advised her ministry of this.

Dr. Gadsby-Dolly explains, operational costs exceed revenues earned, hence the current dilemma.

She tells of how campus management has been operating, which includes loans from various entities.

The education minister shares, some of the measures adopted to mitigate the situation including online offerings, to reach the global audience.

She points out the university intends to utilize its existing resources, and government will not be asked to contribute additional funds for this exercise.

Dr. Gadsby-Dolly was responding to opposition senator Wade Mark, during the questions for oral answer segment in the upper house yesterday.

FORMER CEO OF TSTT LISA AGARD HITS BACK AT TSTT…

The former Chief Executive Officer of the Telecommunication Services of Trinidad and Tobago Lisa Agard, is in defense mode.

She is hitting out at her former employer.

She denies she fed wrong information to the public utilities minister, Marvin Gonzales after the cyber attack on the company.

She also said, she did no wrong in the handling of the attack.

The incident led to her departure from the company.

Yesterday, a joint select committee meeting was held to deal with the cyber attack on TSTT.

It was at this meeting the acting chief executive officer Kent Western, blamed the office managed by Ms. Agard for misleading the minister.

Ms. Agard is reported today, as saying she was never given an option of resignation.

She said, based on what Mr. Western and his team, said to the JSC yesterday, she will be talking with her lawyers.

Early in yesterdays hearing, TSTT’s chairman Sean Roach asked that some matters be private.

The JSC agreed to move part of the sitting behind closed doors, and away from the cameras.

Mr. Roach said, although TSTT was ready and willing to furnish the committee with the relevant information, sensitive information must be protected.

JSC Chairman Anthony Vierra agreed.

A FATAL ACCIDENT IS BEING BLAMED ON THE GRIDLOCK INTO THE CAPITAL CITY…

An early morning accident on the Churchill Roosevelt highway claims the life of one man.

Up to news time he remained unidentified.

Reports say, the incident took place in the vicinity on VMCOTT at around 5:20 this morning.

Newscentre five understands the man was attempting to cross the westbound lane, of the highway when he was hit by a car.

The man died on the spot.

The driver of the motor vehicle stopped and called the police.

The situation is said to have caused traffic jam.

Investigations are now continuing.

A FIRE OFFICER & A TEENAGER ARE AMONG ROBBERY VICTIMS OVER THE WEEKEND…

A woman, who used a private car for hire, has been robbed and stabbed.

The 18 year old was stabbed in Arima yesterday morning.

It is reported, the woman stopped a private car along Omeara Road, wanting to be taken into Arima.

There were three male occupants in the white Nissan B-13

When the vehicle got to Samaroo Village, the man seated next to her pulled out a screwdriver and announced a hold up.

The report says, the man stabbed the teenager on her right leg.

The woman followed the instructions given by the man, and was relieved of her cash and other valuables.

The driver of the car then dropped the victim near Printryville.

The woman went to the Arima municipal police station and made a report.

She was taken to the Arima health facility, where she was examined and treated.

THE DPP SAYS IT MAY NOT BE SIMPLE TO CHARGE PARIA WITH CORPORATE MANSLAUGHTER…

Director of public prosecutions Roger Gaspard is today quoted as saying; it will not be simple and easy to charge Paria Fuel Trading Company with corporate manslaughter.

It’s a recommendation of the commission of enquiry into the deaths of four divers, doing work at the company in 2022.

DPP Gaspard says, he will today begin looking over the 520 pages of commission of enquiry report, which was tabled in the parliament last Friday.

On February 25th 2022 Fyzal Kurban, Rishi Nagassar, Kazim  Ali Jr. and Yusuf Henry, became trapped in a pipeline at Paria.

The only survivor is Christopher Boodram.

At a news conference yesterday, opposition MP and attorney Saddam Hosein called for the board of Paria to be removed.

DPP Gaspard says, the rules in a commission of enquiry are not the same as in a criminal court of law.

Mr Hosein said, the DPP could take action.

The widow of one of the divers from the Paria tragedy, agrees  the company should be charged with corporate manslaughter.

Vanessa Kussie says, the company did nothing to ensure the safety of her husband Rishi Naggassar, and the three others who lost their lives.

Speaking with Newscentre Five yesterday Ms. Kussie said, the company is at fault.

Ms. Kussie also said, Paria should be paying the families for the rest of their lives.

GARY GRIFFITH UNDER FIRE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER AND HIS NATIONAL SECURITY MINISTER

Prime Minister of T&T, Dr. Keith Rowley

The prime minister believes the issuing of firearm users licenses by Gary Griffith, created a country washed with ammunition.

Dr. Keith Rowley says, because of Mr. Griffith’s F.U.L policy, when he was in charge of the police service, the country is today battling an out of control crime situation.

Mr. Griffith has boasted that licenses he issued, have not seen legal guns being used to commit crimes.

Dr. Rowley now begs to disagree.

He says, there is no short supply of bullets in the wrong hands.

According to Dr. Rowley it was all about money.

Dr. Rowley claimed, the police fell down on the job and failed to keep fire arm dealers transparent.

Mr. Griffith was the main focus of the prime minister, and his minister of national at a meeting of the ruling Peoples National Movement in San Juan, last evening.

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds was critical, of the former police commissioner.

He said, last evening it was a good day for him, when Mr. Griffith lost his position.

He said, the government of Kamla Persad Bissessar dismantled everything that would have made the country safer.
