7 People charged for exceeding 80-kilometer speed limit
7 people are fined $1,000.00 each after being charged with exceeding the 80-kilometer speed limit. The motorists were indicted under Section 62:1 of the Motor Vehicle Road Traffic Act.
The seven were pulled over during exercises conducted by the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch along the eastbound lane of the Audrey Jeffers Highway between 5:00 and 6:00pm yesterday. One motorist was ticketed for going 5 kilometers over the speed limit.
Those charged have until July 19th, 2016 to pay the fixed penalty notice of $1000.00. During the Post Cabinet News Conference yesterday Works and Transport Minister Fitzgerald Hinds said even before the speed guns were introduced persons were adhering to the limit.
There are some who believe the speed limit should be increased and there are reports that an online petition has been launched. Minister Hinds said government maybe willing to consider a change. Over 50 persons have been killed on the nations roads for the year so far, most of them due to speeding.
