COVID-19 cases now stand at 154

The country’s total positive COVID-19 cases now stand at 154.

The latest case is a primary contact of a recently positive COVID-19 patient. 

The Ministry of Health last evening said all established protocols have been implemented

Earlier the Ministry of Health said, 3 of the 6 cases were imported by nationals who recently returned from Antigua, Guyana and Vietnam.

Up to yesterday there were 16 COVID-19 positive patients warded at Caura Hospital, while 1 person is warded in the High Dependency Unit in the Couva Hospital and Multi-Training Facility. 

The Ministry said 6,910 samples were submitted to the Caribbean Public Health Agency and University of the West Indies sites for testing.

To date, 128 people have recovered from the virus and discharged, while 8 people have died from the illness. 

On Monday night Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said 4 more people tested positive late yesterday.

He was speaking at a virtual political meeting at City Hall, San Fernando.

Dr. Rowley said while the State has been handling the pandemic well, the country is still in danger.

On Monday, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh was not ready to say if the recent cases constitute a 2nd wave of the virus.

2 TTPS buildings closed and sanitized after WPC test positive for coronavirus

Two buildings which house members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, had to be closed and sanitised after one officer tested positive for the coronavirus.

A woman police officer has tested positive for the virus on Monday.

The WPC is stationed at Riverside Plaza in Port of Spain.

President of the Police Social and Welfare Association, Inspector Gideon Dickson yesterday said the officer from the Riverside Plaza Operations went into quarantine last week.

Contact tracing is now to be done on scores of police officers following the positive result.

Members of staff on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Police Administration Building in Port of Spain were also sent home yesterday.

Inspector Dickson is pleased that all the right things are being done to treat with the situation.

Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith is urging members of the public to follow all protocols before entering police stations across the country.

Man shot in Tobago dies 2 days after

Thirty-four-year-old Frankie Dickson James has died at hospital, 2 days after he was shot in Tobago.

Mr. James died yesterday morning at the Scarborough General Hospital.

Last Sunday he was shot in the abdomen during an incident, which also claimed the life of Keron Sealey of Milford Court.

That incident occurred at Milford Road, Crown Point.

An off duty police officer is said to have intervened during a reported cutlass attack.

It is alleged the officer shot Mr. Sealey because he posed a threat to his life.

The officer is said to have shot 32-year-old Mr. Selaey several times.

A bullet also hit Mr. James.

Almost one-third of Bangladesh affected by flooding

Nearly one-third of Bangladesh is currently affected by flooding, after monsoon hit, leaving 2 million people needing help.

Many of those displaced are living in temporary shelters, while others are being forced to take refuge near highways or bridges.

More than 100 people have died so far.

Health officials say thousands have fallen victim to water-borne diseases.

The government says it is prepared to deal with the situation.

A call for more than just grant assistance from the State from the Blind Welfare Association for Disabled Citizens.

On Saturday, Camille Robinson Regis said that under her administration among those who benefitted were the differently abled.

Speaking with Newscenter 5 yesterday CEO of the association Kenneth Surrat said he appreciates all the help they have received.

He also made a case for the rehabilitation of persons injured on the job.

Mr. Surrat would also like to see more legislation to assist the disabled.

MET office continues to closely monitor low-pressure system in Atlantic

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service says it continues to closely monitor a low-pressure system in the Atlantic, which has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression over the next 48 hours.

It says the system is located approximately 1200 km east of the Windward Islands and is moving westward near 30 km/hr.

The MET office says current analyses suggest that on its projected track, the center of the system is forecast to reach the Leeward Islands by tomorrow night.

However, it says at this time, the system poses no direct threat to Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada and its dependencies.

7 nationals stuck in London said to be homeless

Seven nationals stuck in London are said to be homeless.

One of them, Johnathan Wilson tells Newscenter 5 he is forced to live on the streets in the day and sleep in a shelter at night.

This country’s borders have been closed since March 22nd of this year.

A frustrated Mr. Wilson says he is at his wits end.

An emotional Mr. Wilson explained that it is a challenge of a lifetime.

PM calls Opposition Leader’s comparison of the country’s closed borders with that of slavery, an insult

The Prime Minister describes as an insult, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar’s comparison of the country’s closed borders, with that of slavery.

Last night Dr. Keith Rowley said it appears that Mrs. Persad Bissessar is not aware of what slavery means to people of African descent.

Last week Mrs. Persad-Bissessar claimed the government was locking out nationals and likened the situation proportions worse than that of the oppressive systems of slavery and indentureship.

Dr. Rowley said it was not the first time Mrs. Persad Bissessar has made such hurtful comments.

The Prime Minister has said that citizens stuck in foreign countries would be allowed to come home, but on a phased basis as the country continues to grapple with COVID-19.

Tobagonians are told not to vote based on party, as this would cause them to lose their voice.

The warning comes from one co-founder of One Tobago Voice, Hochoy Charles. 

Mr. Charles blames the current parliamentary system. 

Mr. Charles referred to 2 former Tobago east MP’s ANR Robinson and Eudene Job Davis to prove his point. 

He was speaking at a One Tobago Voice meeting in Goodwood on Sunday.

4 more test positive for COVID

Trinidad and Tobago now has a total of 152 cases of COVID-19.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley says 4 more people tested positive late yesterday.

He was speaking at a virtual political meeting at City Hall, San Fernando last night.

Dr. Rowley said while the state has been handling the pandemic well, the country is still in danger.

Yesterday, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh was not ready to say if the recent cases constitute a second wave of the virus.

He said it was too soon and more information is required.

At the daily COVID update yesterday Minister Deyalsigh said these recent cases may not be a peak.
