SEA set for March

The Secondary Entrance Assessment is set for March 31st.

The Ministry of Education says candidates will be assessed in subject areas such as mathematics, English language creative writing, and English language arts.

It says the mathematics and the English language arts papers will be based on content and objective contained in the primary school curriculum guides 2013, which is currently being implemented and further specified in the revised assessment framework.

Over 300 teachers contract the coronavirus in Guyana

Three hundred and twenty teachers and more than 165 students have contracted the coronavirus since the new school term began in Guyana.

The Guyana Teachers Union says the virus has struck in over 152 schools in the last 2 weeks.

The Union’s President Mark Light says the situation can no longer be ignored.

The GTU has been against the Education Ministry’s decision to allow all schools to resume face-to-face classes this term.

With a surge in cases in the past week the union has recommended that all schools be closed.

The Education Ministry has rejected the suggestion.

There are more than 11,000 active cases of the virus in the country.

16 more people die from COVID

The Ministry of Health says 16 more people have died from COVID-19.

The Ministry says the persons were 9 elderly men, 3 elderly women, 2 middle aged men, and 2 middle aged women.

Additionally, the Ministry says 9 of the deceased had multiple comorbidities, 2 had one comorbidity, while 5 persons had no known medical condition.

These latest deaths push the country’s toll to 3,224.

The Health Ministry is also reporting 648 additional positive cases. It says there are now 16,502 active positive cases in the country.

National Security Minister says yes measures are in place to ensure officers are safe from COVID infection

An assurance from National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds that measures are in place at all police stations to ensure officers do not contract COVID-19 from members of the public.

Minister Hinds made the statement while responding to questions from Opposition Senator Wade Mark yesterday.

The inquiry follows the infection of 9 officers at the Valencia Police Station.

Senator Mark asked if police stations in the 9 divisions were in possession of other equipment to detect flu-like symptoms in the persons they serve.

Minister Hinds could not say.

A fatal overnight traffic accident in Torouba

A man, who is yet to be identified, has died in an accident along the Solomon Hochoy Highway, in Tarouba.

The tragedy occurred at around 7:20 pm.

It is believed the motorist lost control of the Toyota Sienta, while on the northbound lane of the highway.

He slammed head-on into a concrete pillar of the Tarouba overpass.

The victim was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he died while being treated.

Investigations are underway.

17 more COVID related deaths

A young woman is among the 17 new deaths linked to the corona virus.

The Ministry of Health says they were 3 elderly men, 7 elderly women, 2 middle-aged men, 4 middle-aged women and 1 young adult woman.

The Ministry says 8 of the deceased had multiple comorbidities, 7 of them had 1 comorbidity, while 2 had no known medical condition.

The total number of deaths to date is now 3,119.

The Ministry also says there are 577 new positive cases of the virus.

The country’s active caseload is 15,988.

Meanwhile, one more person in Tobago is dead because of COVID-19.

A release from the division of health wellness and social protection confirms the death.

It means the number of fatalities on the island now sits at 220.

The division said the patient was fully vaccinated.

The division also said it recorded 41 new cases of the virus in the latest update bringing the total active caseload to 1,362.

According to the division there are also 36 patients in hospital.

Ballantine family told to bring proof that their daughter became paralysed after taking Pfizer vaccine

Health officials are calling on the Ballantine family to bring the proof that 19-year-old Farisha has suffered because she took the Pfizer vaccine.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said yesterday there is need for evidence.

Farisha’s parents claim the vaccine has left their perfectly healthy daughter paralysed.

She is now using a wheel chair.

At the COVID media update, Epidemiologist, Dr. Avery Hinds also said additional information is still required before a decision can be made.

The National Trade Union Centre presented the Ballantine family to the media on Tuesday.

Teenager among 9 arrested with kidnapping Narine and Mattie Maraj

A teenager is 1 of 9 suspects held in connection with the kidnapping of Narine and Mattie Maraj.

Both husband and wife escaped from a camp in Valencia where their kidnappers held them.

Two days apart the couple freed themselves.

Police say a 16-year-old was held among the 9 male suspects.

They are searching for more suspects.

The suspects are said to be from the northern and eastern divisions.

Last Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Maraj were kidnapped after they left their St. Helena home to go to Piarco to tend their farm.

Two million dollars was demanded for their release.

Last Sunday 62-year-old Mr. Maraj was able to free himself and just before midday on Tuesday his wife was found along Cumaca Road.

Attorney General plans to consult with the THA on safe zones

The Attorney General says he plans to consult with the Tobago House of Assembly on the issue of public sector safe zones. 

At a news conference called following an executive council retreat on Sunday, Chief Secretary Farley Agustine revealed the THA was contemplating its own way forward with respect to State employees on the THA’s payroll. 

In response, Attorney General Faris Al Rawi says he intends to engage the Chief Secretary on the matter. 

On the Rise and Shine Morning Program on Tobago Channel 5 on Tuesday, AG Al Rawi explained that the law regarding vaccination in the public sector would be transitionary in nature. 

AG Al Rawi pointed out that all employees in the public sector are paid by monies from the consolidated fund of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and it matters not how such monies reach the accounts of the respective statutory enterprises.

General Secretary of NATUC, Michael Annisette says the COVID vaccine is wreaking havoc in the lives of some individuals.

Mr. Annisette drew on the case of female student Farisha Ballantine and her parents.

Appearing at the briefing yesterday Ms. Ballantine’s father became emotional while sharing his daughter’s current physical condition.

Mr. Annisette said it was clear that vaccination is not for everyone.

Mr. Annisette called on the media to help in getting persons to understand why the trade union is against vaccination for all.

Mr. Annisette is also the President of Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union.
