Government & Opposition lock horns on way forward for FATCA

images-5The Government and the Opposition lock horns on the way forward for the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Bill.

As a result it is now heading to a Joint Select Committee of the parliament.

Following talks between both sides yesterday Finance Minister Colm Imbert said he would have preferred solid and speedy agreement, but that has not happened.

Meanwhile Opposition MP Bhoe Tewarie is confident there will be agreement before the September 30th deadline.

And last night Naparima MP Rodney Charles said the Finance Minister had promised to give the FATCA documents to the Opposition in August.

However, he said his side only received the papers some 4 days before the proposed legislation went to the house.

He said the United National Congress would not be forced into supporting any bill.

Last Friday the Opposition refused to support the legislation saying there must be amendments.
