50 now jobless and millions of dollars lost following a fire in San Juan. The blaze early yesterday morning gutted several buildings including the Nahous Warehouse and Samaroo’s Party Supplies buildings.
Residents of Boundary Road reported seeing thick smoke coming from Nahous Warehouse around 3 o’ clock yesterday morning and contacted the San Juan Fire Station. However, by the time fire tenders arrived, the fire had spread to Samaroo’s Party Supplies. Owner of the carnival supplies outfit Steve Samaroo told reporters he lost millions.
Initial reports suggested damage to be over 20 million dollars. But president of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service Association, Leo Ramkisson yesterday said there was no estimate of damage yet. Speaking with Newscentre 5 Mr. Ramkisson commended fire officers for their efforts while treating with recent fires.
However, he said a lack of equipment continues to be a major issue for fire officers in the execution of their duties. The cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained.
