Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley says the state of the Police Service is responsible for the low detection rate of murders in the country.
He says the officers are demoralised and without permanent leadership.
Dr Rowley was interviewed for 2 hours on the afternoon drive program on i 95.5 fm on Wednesday.
The new Prime Minister lamented the upsurge in murders calling the detection rate totally unacceptable.
Dr Rowley assured his government intends to put all mechanisms in place to assist the country’s security agencies in preventing and detecting crime.
He said all members of parliament must be concerned about the country’s lack of security.
He said back in 2004 when then Prime Minister Patrick Manning attempted to make adjustments to legislation to respond to run away crime the opposition was attempting to negotiate.
Dr Rowley said the police service commission was left emasculated and the process in which a police commissioner is appointed suffered as a result.
He said while combating crime would be costly, it is sure to be money well spent
The Prime Minister said his minister of national security has been working with the protective services to make it less attractive for the criminal elements to be unfettered in their actions.
