Rastafarians in Guyana are calling for a review of existing legislation as it relates to marijuana. Some of them staged a protest yesterday following the sentencing of a football coach who was found in possession of 46 grams of marijuana.
Viebert Butts now has to spend the next 3 years in prison. The protesting Rastafarians are not pleased with the court’s decision and are demanding adjustments to existing legislation.
Mr. Butts pleaded guilty to the offence and told the court he was not trafficking the drug but it was to be used for medicinal purposes. Protesters believe the state may be breaching the country’s constitution by its position on marijuana. Mr. Butts attorneys are already saying they will appeal the magistrate’s ruling.
