Bahamas eases restrictions in bid to reopen economy

The Prime Minister of Bahamas eases restrictions in a bid to open up the economy.

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis yesterday announced some sweeping changes to some protocols and emergency orders.

He revealed that all islands, except for New Providence, may now have small gatherings of no more than 10 people.

Also visiting hours for beaches and recreational parks will be from 5am to noon.

Residents on all islands, including New Providence may also exercise outdoors in their neighbourhoods from 5am and 10pm.

The Prime Minister has also announced that business agencies, establishments and institutions will now be able to operate.

Casinos remain closed.

Meanwhile the tourism sector is making another attempt to reopen.

Tourism Minister Deonisio Deaguilla yesterday said all hotel properties should begin operating again on October 15th.

Tourists to the Bahamas must present a negative RT PCR test taken within 5 days of travel.

Once on the island the Minister said such visitors would be given a VIP experience.

The Minister expects that there will be strict security measures on properties.

He also believes all hotel owners should ensure their staff members remain safe, by offering on site COVID-19 testing.

Police seeking assistance from the public in finding missing teen

15-year-old Maria Paul missing

Valencia police are seeking the assistance of the public in finding missing teenager, 15-year-old Maria Paul.

Police say Maria was last seen leaving her Valencia home on Friday 4th September, 2020, and was reported missing on the same date.

In a release the TTPS says Maria is of East Indian descent, approximately 4ft 3inches tall, slim built, brown complexion, with long straight black hair, brown eyes, oval face and straight nose.

She was last seen wearing a pair of black long jeans, black long sleeved jersey, black hijab, brown sandals and was carrying a multi-colored book bag.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Maria Paul is asked to contact the Valencia Police Station at 667–9030, Crime Stoppers at 800-TIPS or contact the police at 555, 999, 911 or share information via the TTPS app.

CAL distributes COVID medical supplies to Caribbean countries to help combat COVID-19

Caribbean Airlines distributes over 2,000 boxes of medical supplies to 16 Caribbean countries to assist them in their combat against COVID-19.

In a release, the state owned airlines says the initiative was done in collaboration with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency.


It says the supplies include Personal Protective Equipment and COVID-19 test kits donated by the World Health Organization and the United Arab Emirates.

CAL says with the continued closure of several countries’ borders, the world is currently experiencing limited connectivity and cargo capacity.

It says despite this challenge, the airline developed effective solutions in order to move the supplies to each territory at a subsidized cost.

Caribbean Airlines Cargo transported the supplies to Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean utilizing its freighter and passenger aircraft.

The airline also collaborated with Interline Partners to ship the supplies to destinations where it is not currently offering scheduled flights such as British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla, Turks and Caicos, Belize and Suriname.

61 persons receive tickets for failing to wear masks in public

Police issue over 60 tickets to persons for failing to wear masks in public spaces.

Sixty-one people have received tickets for breaching the COVID-19 regulations so far.

They were issued across 3 policing divisions between the period 6 pm on Sunday and 6 am yesterday.

The TTPS says 56 infractions occurred in the eastern division, where the Mayaro police issued 52 tickets.

The penalty for failing to wear a mask is $1,000 as a first offence.

This is one of the measures implemented in the Public Health Ordinance regulations to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

In a release, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service appeals to all citizens to adhere to all COVID-19 regulations by wearing facemasks, not having gatherings of more than 5 persons in public places, and practicing social distancing, in order to reduce the spread of the virus.

Yesterday the Health Minister said despite legislation, which now makes it mandatory to wear masks in public places, people continue to flout COVID-19 regulations.

Health Minister, Terrence Deyalsingh again urged people to do the right thing.

He is also asking people to ensure masks are worn correctly.

The Minister was speaking at a media conference yesterday.

Another COVID death taking number of fatalities to 38

Another person has died from the COVID-19 virus.

A release from the Ministry of Health says the latest person to die from the virus is an elderly woman with co-morbidities.

The total number of fatalities now stands at 38.

The Ministry also says 70 additional persons have tested positive for the virus.

The Ministry says all established protocols have been implemented.

It says number of samples, which have tested positive at public and private facilities in Trinidad and Tobago, now stands at 2,347 while the number of active cases is 1,566.

It says 9 additional persons have been discharged bringing the total to 743.

Jamaica Labour Party wins General Election

Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness

The ruling Jamaica Labour Party gets another term in office.

The Andrew Holness led party won yesterday’s General Election by a resounding margin.

According to preliminary results the JLP won as many as 50 of the 63 seats in the Parliament.

Leader of the Peoples National Party Dr. Peter Phillips has already indicated that he would resign if defeated.

Dr. Phillips is reported to have already telephoned Prime Minister Andrew Holness offering his congratulations.

Last night hours after the preliminary results were released, Mr. Holness welcomed the victory, but with some caution.

He said too many people decided against voting.

Mr. Holness said the victory must not be used as a weapon.

The Prime Minister admitted that corruption and the perception dogged his last administration.

He said the party and government couldn’t hide away from that reality.

There are preliminary indications that the voter turnout yesterday was about 37%, down from the Election of 2016.

In the camp of the PNP, Campaign Chairman Phillip Paulwell, blamed the perceived disunity within for the defeat.

The Vice President of the PNP described the defeat as shocking, saying they must all take full responsibility.

Mr. Paulwell said the party must now do some reflection.

Pandemic period has seen a rise in cases of domestic violence in T&T

The period of the COVID-19 pandemic has also seen increased cases of domestic violence.

Psychologist Dr. Khadija Khan says violence has been on the increase since the virus arrived earlier this year.

Dr. Khan made the statement following the brutal murder of a mother of 4 in Laventille.

A man with whom she shared a home chopped Sherian Huggins to death.

The attacker, Kevon Harris was later found hanging from a tree at Woodford Square.

Yesterday, Dr. Khan said, more needs to be done to improve the manner in which children and young adults resolve conflict.

She was speaking on the Morning Show on i95.5fm yesterday.

Dr. Khan who is also a member of the board of the Institute of Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies says domestic violence continues to be a huge social issue in this country.

Jack Warner is said to be in good spirits after testing positive for coronavirus

Former Minister Jack Warner remains at the Couva Hospital after testing positive for the coronavirus.

According to the administration of his official Facebook page the former FIFA Vice President is in good spirits.

It is said he tested negative at first and then when his condition deteriorated another test was done which came back positive.

The administration of Mr. Warner’s official Facebook page confirmed reports of him having contracted COVID-19 and said he is in good spirits.

Call for new strategies in dealing with the virus

Former head of the National Operations Center Garvin Heerah says Trinidad and Tobago needs a new strategy in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Heerah says now is the time for country to engage and consider ‘ down range’ planning.

Mr. Heerah is especially concerned about the long-term repercussions for energy, social services, education and national security.

He says all stakeholders including the Commissioner of Police will need to work together to pave the road ahead.

Mr. Heerah says, if  the global atmosphere remains threatened, losing the war on the pandemic and failing to cope, there is a strong possibility, that this can have a cause and effect result on this country’s future.

Another COVID related death recorded

Another death linked to the COVID-19 is recorded.

This brings the number of fatalities in Trinidad and Tobago to 29.

In a release last evening the Ministry of Health said the latest death was an elderly male with co-morbidities.

The release said all established protocols have been implemented.

It said 43 additional persons have tested positive for the COVID-19.

The Ministry said these positive cases were from samples taken from August 28th to yesterday.

The release also said the total number of active cases is now 1255 while the number of samples which have tested positive at public and private facilities in Trinidad and Tobago are 1,984.
