There will be 2 contenders for the race to lead the opposition United National Congress.

They are incumbent, Kamla Persad Bissessar and former Minister Vasant Bharath.

Yesterday was Nomination Day.

Three names had initially surfaced, Mrs. Persad Bissessar, Mr. Bharath and former Minister Devant Maharaj.

But by the end of the Nomination Day process, Mr. Maharaj pulled his name.

He was not pleased with the process.

Vasant Bharath completed his process yesterday.

He feels he stands a very good chance of unseating Mrs. Persad Bissessar.

He said he has a team ready to fill all the positions up for grabs next month.

The murder of father and son, Adlay and Che Lewis is now being investigated.

Police were up to last evening searching for the gunmen who killed the 2 at their Diego Martin home last Saturday night.

Reports are saying gunmen entered the house in Bagatelle and fired several shots at the father and son.

The assailants then escaped.

Residents in the area contacted the police.

When lawmen arrived they found the father in the living room and the son’s body was found in a bedroom.

There were others in the house at the time but they were not hurt.

A motive for the killing has not yet been established.

Adlay Lewis was 59-years-old while his son Che was 29.

Both were auto painters and straighteners.

Up to last evening the search was on for the suspects.

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith pays a visit to Maracas Bay issuing warnings but no tickets for persons who may have been flouting COVID restrictions.

Commissioner Griffith says what he saw during his visit yesterday was encouraging.

Over the weekend police officers issued tickets to limers along Ariapita Avenue.

Those ticketed were reportedly not wearing masks and were drinking alcohol outside bars.

Commissioner Griffith told reporters yesterday people have to be more responsible.

Commissioner Griffith said people are still too selfish and want police to turn a blind eye to breaches of the law.

Soldier and founder of the Drugs Sou Sou, Kerrom Clarke has been sent on vacation leave, with immediate effect.

The instruction came from the Defense Force and was given as investigations into the operations of DSS continue.

In a statement yesterday the Defense Force assured it is supporting the police investigations into the Sou Sou.

Presidential candidate Oral Saunders says he has received intelligence of the intention by current President Watson Duke.

Speaking with Newscenter 5 yesterday Mr. Saunders said this must not be allowed to take place.

A 2-year-old boy has been injured during fireworks celebrating Divali.

The boy was up to yesterday warded at hospital.

Police were told that at about 7.45pm last Saturday, the child was in the yard with his six-year-old brother lighting deyas, when there was a an explosion

The 2-year-old ran towards his sibling holding his right arm, which was bleeding.

The 6-year-old raised an alarm, and the child was taken for medical treatment.

An X-Ray was conduct and an unidentified object was seen lodged in the right arm.

Police suspect that a fragment of the explosive device hit the child.

Surgery was up to yesterday being considered.

A 21-year-old Venezuelan national is arrested and charged with damaging State property.

A release from the TTPS says officers of the Central Division Task Force detained him, after he was allegedly found behaving in a violent and erratic manner on Wednesday.

Police say the officers picked up Luis Marquez, after residents of the area reported the man for his unusual conduct.

He also allegedly assaulted one resident before the officers arrived.

The release says the officers, while taking the suspect to the Cunupia Police Station, observed that the he continued behaving violently.

It says he struck the front door with his head, breaking the glass while pushing his head through the pane causing damage to both him and the vehicle.

After further investigations and with the aid of an interpreter, Mr. Marquez was charged with malicious damage to property of the government of Trinidad and Tobago. Police say it was also discovered that Mr. Marquez is not legally residing in the country.

Vasant Bharath says the opposition United National Congress failed miserably in the campaign leading up to the August 10^th General Election.

Making a bid to unseat Kamla Persad Bissessar on December 6^th, Mr. Bharath on Tuesday night said the UNC and its executive have been unkind to people who are experienced and could have made a difference on the campaign.

At a virtual meeting the former MP and Minister turned his attention to what he sees as the failings of the government and its constant attempts to tax already strained and stressed citizens.

He also said the government’s recently tabled Provisional Taxes Order, was not about cancer patients or the bid discourage the habit of smoking.

According to Mr. Bharath, it was about raising revenue and nothing else.
