“Monster” faces 10 charges including murder

jailPrison escapee Christopher “Monster” Selby appears in court, charged with ten offences including the murder of PC Sherman Maynard following the deadly jail break on July 24th.

Mr Selby and two accomplices, who were later killed, Allan Martin and Hassan Atwell, shot their way out of the Port of Spain prison on Frederick Street on during a daring midday jail break.

Mr Selby appeared before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar in the Eight Court shortly before noon yesterday.

He was not called upon to plead as the charges were laid indictably.

In addition to the murder charge, Mr Selby, 30, was charged with being in possession of a firearm, committing the act of common assault on four prison officers and a police officer, robbing a civilian of his $200,000 Nissan Navara van while being armed with a firearm, escaping lawful custody and robbing the State of Trinidad and Tobago of two keys valued at $140.

His attorney Criston J Williams said he was aware that the charges were laid indictably but indicated to the court that his client wished to “adopt a particular course” with respect to the chare of escaping custody. However, police prosecutor Insp Winston Dillion indicated to the court, given that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had to appoint a State attorney to prosecute the matter, he was not willing to undertake any decision of his own on how the matter should proceed.

Selby will next return to court on September 1st.
