A woman has died at the Scarborough General Hospital after giving birth to a child by caesarean section. 35 year-old Rose Gordon died on New Years Day, after delivering her baby girl at 34 weeks and 5 days into her pregnancy. The operation was done on New Years Eve.
Candy Gordon Abraham says her sister underwent 2 surgeries before she died. She says relatives want answers. An autopsy is expected to be performed on the body today. In a statement the Tobago Regional Health Authority describes Ms. Gordon as a “high risk patient,” but failed to give any additional details.
It says Ms. Gordon passed away from complications after giving birth despite concerted efforts by her medical team to ensure the safety of both the mother and baby. The release says TRHA officials met with members of Ms. Gordon’s family and plans are in place to assist them during their time of bereavement. Efforts to contact Secretary for Health and Social Services Claudia Groome Duke were unsuccessful. The last time the Scarborough General Hospital had a maternal death was 2014.
