Ahead of the talks between the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader, the President of the Republic is calling on them to put aside politics and find solutions to the crime problem.
President Anthony Carmona was speaking at an Independence Day event at the police headquarters in port of spain yesterday when he referred to the planned meeting.
The President is hoping there will be action on the issue of crime, and not political games.
The meeting tomorrow was a suggestion of Kamla Persad Bissessar’s United National Congress.
The UNC has proposed an agenda for discussion, as was suggested by Prime Minister Keith Rowley.
The opposition has proposed that discussions include legislative matters, administrative issues, civil society and public stakeholder relations, non-partisan parliamentary partnerships and a framework for continued co-operation.
A letter to the Prime Minister, from the UNC Chairman Dr. David Lee thanked Rowley for accepting the opposition’s proposal to meet and said that the party looks forward to “successful and productive discussions in the national interest”.
President Carmona yesterday expressed confidence that the problems the country faces can be solved.
It was one of several events hosted yesterday in commemoration of the nation’s 54th anniversary of Independence.
