Influenza Advisory

Influenza_Header-22The suspected Swine Flu death of a woman at the San Fernando General Hospital has led to an advisory being issued by the Ministry of Health regarding the dangers of Influenza, and treatment options.

STATEMENT: Influenza is an acute illness that can be caused by several different viruses, including H1N1, H3N2, and other respiratory viruses that circulate in all parts of the world. In tropical countries, such as ours, influenza occurs throughout the year, unlike countries with colder climates, when seasonal epidemics occur during the colder months.

In Trinidad and Tobago, more than six thousand (6,000) suspected cases of influenza are reported yearly. Symptoms can include high fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, runny nose and generally feeling unwell. Most people recover within a week without any medical attention. However, influenza can cause severe illness in some persons including the elderly, infants, young children and pregnant women as well as those with chronic medical conditions, such as heart, lung, kidney disease, and diabetes.

Influenza can spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes and droplets containing viruses get into the air and are inhaled by persons nearby. Persons can also become infected by touching surfaces (door knobs, desks etc) contaminated with flu viruses and then touching their eyes, mouth or nose. To prevent the spread of infectious diseases like influenza, the public is urged to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Wash hands with soap and water regularly. Avoid close contact with people who have flu like symptoms. If you have symptoms of the flu, seek immediate medical attention if any of the following symptoms develop: difficulty breathing, chest tightness, inability to eat or drink, persistent vomiting, or confusion.

Safe and effective vaccines that can prevent influenza or reduce the severity of illness are available at local health centres. Vaccination is especially important for people at higher risk of serious complications of influenza and for people who live with or care for high risk individuals.

The continues to monitor all diseases of public health importance. For more information about influenza, visit www.health.gov.tt

Warriors look to add to impressive goal tally

Soca WarriorsScoring 15 goals in seven international matches is by no means a lousy record in international football today. So to say the “Soca Warriors” have a lot of work to do in the finishing department based on the recent 0-0 draw with Nicaragua is not a fair statement.

Dating back to the 1-0 win over Haiti just prior to the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July, the “Soca Warriors” have scored in every game leading up to the 0-0 draw with Nicaragua, including seven goals against Gold Cup champion Mexico. The scorers include Keron Cummings (three), Kenwyne Jones (three), Sheldon Bateau (two), Joevin Jones (two), with Jonathan Glenn, Yohance Marshall, Willis Plaza, Andre Boucaud and Radanfah Abu Bakr, getting one each. They have conceded ten, including seven in the two clashes with Mexico.

The improvement in goalscoring followed a small drought up until the loss to Jordan in June.

Of course, goals win matches and it will be an important factor in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers beginning with the pair of games with Guatemala and United States next November 13 and 17, respectively.

“I don’t think there should be any worrying factor or panic about not being able to score goals just based on the 0-0 draw with Nicaragua,” said defender Yohance Marshall.

“We have been scoring goals although we have missed a few chances as well. I think once we continue to work on our areas which we know need addressing then we should be fine for the two upcoming games. A good period together before the Guatemala game, maybe three or four days will be important for us. Defensively we will like to be more efficient and avoid any soft goals and I think finishing wise we will get it right.”

T&T head coach Stephen Hart also added: “We created numerous chances and to say I was unhappy with the performance because of the result (against Nicaragua) would not be a fair statement.

“Of course we are aware that chances are there to be taken and we cannot afford to let them go by but we’ll continue to plug away with the right approach and mentality which the players have demonstrated so far and go out there with the intention of getting the best possible start to the campaign.”

Sweden sword attack: Two killed by masked attacker

swedishpoliceA masked man armed with a sword has killed a pupil and a teacher at a school in Sweden.

Two further victims were seriously injured at the school in the western town of Trollhattan.

The attacker was shot by police and has died of his injuries. He was 21 and resident in Trollhattan, police said.

Eyewitnesses described chaos at the school, with hundreds of students fleeing from the building screaming.

Police responded to an emergency call reporting an attack in the cafe area of the Kronan School, at around 10:10 local time (08:10 gmt) on Thursday.

One teacher died of his wounds at the scene.

Two male students, aged 11 and 15, and another teacher were rushed to hospital. One of the boys has since died of his injuries.

The attacker was also taken to hospital with gunshot wounds and has since died.

Police have searched the suspect’s home.

A student at the school has provided a photo, apparently showing the attacker posing in the school corridor, ahead of the attacks.

It shows a man wearing black, with a helmet, a mask and a sword, possibly resembling a Nazi World War 2 uniform.

A girl in the eighth grade told Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter that she was in a maths lesson when they saw the masked man in the corridor.

“We thought it was a Halloween joke,” she said. “He was completely dressed in black and had a mask.”

The girl said her teacher went out into the corridor and tried to remove the mask, and it was then the man attacked and stabbed with the sword, she said.

Police spokesman Thomas Fuxborg said police fired two shots, one of which hit the attacker. No motive was given for the attack.

One student told the local newspaper: “I was in a classroom with my class when one of my classmates’ sisters called her to warn her that there was a murderer at the school. So we locked the door to the classroom, but our teacher was still outside in the corridor.

“We wanted to warn him, so a few of us went outside and then I saw the murderer, he was wearing a mask and had a sword. Our teacher got stabbed.

“The murderer started chasing me, I ran into another classroom. If I had not run, I would have been murdered. I’m feeling really scared. Everyone’s scared here.”

Sweden’s Prime Minister, Stefan Lofven, will travel to Trollhattan this afternoon. He said it was a “black day for Sweden”.

“I think of the victims and their families, students and staff, and the whole of the affected community. No words can describe what they are going through right now. We must ensure that they receive all the support they need,” he said.

Sweden’s Interior Minister, Anders Ygeman, said on twitter: “it is with sadness and dismay I received the news of the attack on the school in Trollhattan. My thoughts go to the victims and their families.”

Trollhattan is an industrial town in west Sweden, located around 75km (50 miles) north of Gothenburg, the nation’s second largest city.

School attacks are rare in Sweden – this is the first since a shooting at a school in Kungalv near Gothenburg in 1961 which killed one person and injured six others.
