President Trump extends pause on some Green Cards and suspended Visas for other foreign workers

President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has extended a pause on some Green Cards and suspended Visas for other foreign workers until the end of 2020.

High-skilled tech workers, non-agricultural seasonal helpers, au pairs and top executives will be affected.

The White House said the move would create jobs for Americans hurting economically due to the pandemic.

But critics say the White House is exploiting the Coronavirus pandemic to tighten up Immigration Laws.

In a briefing for reporters, the administration said the freeze, in place through the end of the year, would impact about 525,000 people.

That includes an estimated 170,000 people blocked by the decision to extend a ban on some new Green Cards – which grants permanent residence to foreigners.

The White House first announced it was halting those Visas in April, an order that had been set to expire on Monday.

Existing Visa holders are not expected to be affected under the new restrictions announced on Monday.

Domestic Violence Amendment Bill has been passed

Senator Paul Richards

The Domestic Violence Amendment Bill has been passed unanimously in the Upper House.

All 29 Senators present, including the Opposition and the Independents voted in favour of the Bill.

Debate on the Bill went on for several hours yesterday.

At 10:30pm it was passed.

The Bill goes to the House of Representatives tomorrow.

Earlier in the debate last evening, Independent Senator Hazel Thompson Ayee proposed an amendment to the legislation, which would cover same sex relationships.

At the committee stage of the debate, she implied that Attorney General Faris al Rawi appeared reluctant to touch what is a human rights issue.

Mr. al Rawi said there are other laws, which cover that section of the society.

He denied that he was reluctant to deal with the matter.

Mr. al Rawi sought to set the record straight, he is not afraid of controversial law or legislation.

Senator Thompson Ayee sought further clarification but the President of the Senate stopped her.

And Independent Senator Paul Richards revealed as well that he and his mother survived domestic violence.

In welcoming the Domestic Violence Amendment Bill, Senator Richards explained his childhood in a house where there was violence.

He said his father was the abuser and his mother paid the price.

The Senator said shame and stigmatisation cannot and should not be fed.

Senator Richards called on people in and out of the parliament to speak out.

South Korean health officials believe the country is experiencing its second wave of COVID-19

Health officials in South Korea believe the country is going through a second wave of Coronavirus, despite recording relatively low numbers.

The country had been a success story in dealing with COVID-19, but now expects the pandemic to continue for months.

The head of the Korea Centers for Disease Control (KCDC), said the first wave lasted up until April.

Yet since May, clusters of new cases have grown, including outbreaks at nightclubs in the capital, Seoul.

Between those periods, daily-confirmed cases had fallen from nearly a thousand to zero infections recorded for three days in a row.

Today officials said over the last 24 hours, 17 new infections had been recorded, from different clusters in large offices and warehouses.

Dr. Jeong said the recent resurgence had led her to conclude that the country was in the grip of a second wave of the virus, and that she expected it to continue.

Until now, the KCDC had said that South Korea’s first wave had never really ended.
