Government Ministers defend their colleagues

Government Ministers come out in defense of 2 colleagues, who are said to have recused themselves from Cabinet meetings more than 80 times.

The opposition leader Kamla Persad Bissessar earlier this week said Attorney General Faris Al Rawi and National Security Minister, Stuart Young have had to leave Cabinet meetings because of their relatives involvement in transactions under review.

Yesterday the Finance Minister Colm Imbert said his colleague Stuart Young and his relatives did not profit from millions of dollars in loans from NCB Global Finance Ltd.

At a political meeting on Monday, Mrs. Persad Bissessar told a different story about Mr. Young.

But Minister Imbert said the opposition leader has her facts wrong.

There were similar denials on behalf of the Attorney General Faris Al Rawi.

They came from Minister Allison West yesterday.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar told the meeting on Monday the Attorney General has had to recuse himself 37 times.

However Minister West did admit Mr. Al Rawi’s relatives had interests in one property rented by the government.

Both Ministers were speaking at a media conference yesterday.

Commissioner Griffith is reported as saying he has full responsibility to lead the probe into DSS and so far it has not been compromised.

Sudanese asylum seekers in Israel worried they may be kicked out once normalisation agreement is signed

Sudanese asylum seekers in Israel are worried they will be kicked out once the normalisation agreement between the 2 countries is signed, though some hope their presence will be seen as an advantage.

Technically at war with Israel for decades, Sudan, last Friday, became the 3rd Arab country this year to announce it is normalising ties with Israel, following the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

While the agreement still needs approval from Sudan’s yet-to-be formed legislative council, Sudanese political parties did not welcome it.

Sudan’s former Prime Minister Sadiq Al-Mahdi slammed the announcement, also opposed by the Sudanese Baath Party and the popular Congress Party which said the country’s transitional government is not elected and therefore not authorised to normalise relations with Israel.

Last week, dozens of Sudanese demonstrated in the capital Khartoum chanting “no peace, no negotiation, no reconciliation with the occupying entity”.

Sudan’s yet-to-be-formed council still needs to be established under a power-sharing deal between military officers and civilians, who have been running Sudan jointly since the overthrow of Omar Al-Bashir in 2019.

Jamaica PM indicates damage caused by tropical storm is at 2 billion and counting

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has indicated that the damage caused by Tropical Storm Zeta is at 2 billion and counting.

But speaking in parliament yesterday Mr. Holness said the estimate, included in a report presented by the national work agency is preliminary because the agency is still unable to access all communities, which recorded damage.

However, Mr. Holness warns that the estimate could “rise significantly”.

The preliminary estimate covers road clearance, drain cleaning, access creation and road patching but does not include the cost for permanent repairs or major rehabilitation to roads and bridges.

Yesterday, before going to the Parliament, the Prime Minister told reporters he intends to visit some of the affected communities.

According to the Prime Minister, there has been significant damage to parochial roads with some 60 percent affected.

Mr. Holness had an assurance for the people most affected.

Last Sunday Tropical Storm Zeta dumped inches of rain on Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands.

There were 2 deaths in St. Andrew as a result of flooding caused by the storm.

The National Works Agency’s Communications Manager, Stephen Shaw said yesterday Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine, Clarendon and Manchester were the most affected parishes.

The government has said it is proposing a program of targeted interventions with the opening of blocked roads being prioritised.

The Prime Minister said yesterday emphasis is also being placed on cleaning critical drains now heavily silted and patching the main thoroughfares.
