A 56 year old man has lost several fingers on his left hand after an accident involving explosives he was setting off on Divali night.

Arjoon Maharaj lost his thumb, index and middle fingers during the incident on Tuesday evening.

Officials at the San Fernando general hospital say Mr. Maharaj was just one of several people seeking treatment for fireworks related injuries. Mr. Maharaj was up to last evening in a stable condition at hospital.

Medical director at the hospital Dr. Anand Chattergoon confirmed that up to 11 people have been treated for such injuries, among them two children.

Dr. Chattergoon says a nine year old girl from Point Fortin suffered an injury to one of her eyes because of fireworks explosives.

He says a five year old girl from Couva had burns to her neck again caused by the use of explosives.
