The Trade Minister is seeking to allay the concerns of those who feel small businesses should have been allowed to operate as part of the government’s phase one lifting of restrictions.
For most of the last two days organisations and individuals have called for the re-opening of small businesses.
Minister Paula Gopie-Scoon says keeping small businesses closed is an attempt by her government to protect lives.
She said yesterday she understands the concerns, but the reopening of the economy has to be carefully done.
The Downtown Owners and Merchants Association is one body, which has criticised the decision of the government.
DOMA’s President Gregory Aboud said some small business operators cannot survive for much longer.
Mr. Aboud cannot understand the logic behind the government’s move.
Speaking with Newscenter 5 Mrs. Gopie-Scoon said she is aware of the challenges.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley last Saturday announced the re-opening of restaurants and food establishments, which became effective yesterday.
