Defence attorney Fareed Ali is calling on the police to release the 37-year-old man seen in a video beating a woman at a bar in east Trinidad.
Mr Ali says no charges have been laid against his client although he has been in custody for 72 hours now. He says the 26-year-old woman being beaten in the video has been providing meals and clothing for her detained male companion.
Speaking with News Centre 5 Mr Ali said police will carry out an identification parade sometime today before moving forward. He accused investigators of dragging their feet.
The woman allegedly beaten in the video initially complied with police and gave statements on the incident.
However, she did not comply with taking a medical examination.
It is said investigators are to consult with senior officers as well as legal teams on how best to proceed.
