Two cousins are now in police custody having surrendered to police investigating the murder of Superintendent of Prisons David Millette. The two men are cousins of an inmate who was allegedly beaten by prison officers on Monday this week.
According to reports a 20 year old man first surrendered to Inspector Roger Alexander on Tuesday after he was told the police wanted him. He went to the police officer accompanied by attorney CJ Williams.
Mr. Williams is reported as saying the man feared for his life and decided to surrender at the Morvant Police Station. Yesterday afternoon another relative of the inmate surrendered to Inspector Alexander as well.
Both men were being sought in connection with gang related activities, gun related offences and other serious crimes. On Tuesday, one day after Supt. Millette was shot dead in the driveway of his second Caledonia Morvant home, police held 12 people in two exercises.
The murder of the officer has sparked outrage from within the prison service. President of the Prison Officers Association Cerron Richards gave the government one month to meet certain demands.
Yesterday, National Security Minister Edmund Dillon met with the Prisons Commissioner, assuring that the wants of prison officers will be met. The Minister and his government were yesterday given a one month deadline to deal with the concerns of prison officers.
President Richards told a news conference the meeting between the Minister and Prisons Commissioner Sterling Stewart took too long to happen. Speaking with reporters after the talks yesterday, Commissioner Stewart said officer Millette was an innocent officer who was targeted by criminals.
He said there was a link between the murder and a scuffle the day before.
